Andi Markriss hasn’t exactly enjoyed being the houseguest of the planetary high-lord, but her company sent her to represent them at a political wedding. When hotshot Sectors Special Forces Captain Tom Deverane barges in on the night of the biggest social event of the summer, Andi isn’t about to offend her high-ranking host on Deverane’s say-so—no matter how sexy he is, or how much he believes they need to leave now.
Deverane was thinking about how to spend his retirement bonus when HQ assigned him one last mission: rescue a civilian woman stranded on a planet on the verge of civil war. Someone has pulled some serious strings to get her plucked out of the hot zone. Deverane’s never met anyone so hard-headed—or so appealing. Suddenly his mission to protect this one woman has become more than just mere orders.
That mission proves more dangerous than he expected when rebel fighters attack the village and raze it to the ground. Deverane escapes with Andi, and on their hazardous journey through the wilderness, Andi finds herself fighting her uncomfortable attraction to the gallant and courageous captain. But Deverane’s not the type to settle down, and running for one’s life doesn’t leave much time to explore a romance.
Then Andi is captured by the rebel fighters, but Deverane has discovered that Zulaire’s so-called civil war is part of a terrifying alien race’s attempt to subjugate the entire Sector. If he pushes on to the capitol Andi will die. Deverane must decide whether to save the woman he loves, or sacrifice her to save Zulaire.

Humankind has finally conquered the last frontier…and has the Universe has come to regret it!
This brilliant story is much more than an action-packed, sci-fi thriller. Humankind has finally conquered space, and as history would like to remind us, it has been anything but pleasant for most, if not all intelligent life-forms that we’ve encountered amidst the stars.
The story’s told mainly from the point of view of Timberwolf Vélez, the protagonist, and Emmanuel Gray, his antagonist. Timberwolf and Gray are old warriors, former colleagues who get reacquainted with each other when they end up involved in a race for control of Highland, a major scientific and technological complex responsible for the creation of some of the most amazing weapons that humankind has ever created.
Through Timberwolf’s and Gray’s journey we come to find out that, no matter how an advanced a race humankind has become, we still carry the same old baggage with us. Entire alien species have been annihilated by overzealous humans driven by the power of a God that, according to the fanatical religious group known as the Believers, did not mean for these abominations to exist.
Then again, any major religious movement in history has had its share of inner schemes and power struggles. And the Believers are not the exception, of course. Their leaders will stop at nothing to reach their goal. And they mean business.
These folk have some seriously sick firepower at their backs, such as Wrath, a terrifying, genetically modified creature that made me wonder what would’ve happened if humankind had actually been able to tame H.R. Giger’s brilliant creatures to turn them into the perfect killing machine in the Alien films universe.
Standing in the way of the Gray-led Believers and their goal to control Highland are the Arnock, a race of giant, telepathic arachnids. These big spiders are led by Kizik, a master of the mind who is willing to do whatever it takes to preserve his race and civilization, including the sacrifice of some of his most respected and highly-regarded peers.
The interesting thing is that Kizik managed to infiltrate our protagonist’s head during a showdown between Timberwolf and the eight-legged telepath a few years ago. And as you can expect, the interaction between Kizik and Timberwolf in the latter’s mind is quite interesting and thought-provoking, to say the least.
Without giving away any major spoilers, the glimpses that we get into the Arnock and their civilization leads to empathy and compassion for all kinds of life-forms. At least it did for me. And that’s taking into account that I hate all kinds of arachnids.
Characters are excellent, well-developed and fleshed out. Timberwolf, Gray, Salla, Michael, Cardinal Jacob, Achilles and his brothers . . . major or minor, every single character has a past and is flawed, just like every single one of us. Even the Arnock.
Again, Timberwolf manages to drive its point home, the book and the main character both.
The book doesn’t come out preachy, which is no easy feat by any stretch of the imagination, given all the social, spiritual and philosophical topics that are being exposed here. And the action is simply amazing; it makes putting the book down nearly impossible.
As an avid reader of George R.R. Martin’s masterful A Song of Ice and Fire, I’ve always contended that it’s not the otherworldly menaces (The Others/White Walkers) that are the real monsters in Martin’s world, but humankind as a whole; a theme that certainly resonates given the way things are in this day and age.
I believe no such argument is needed for Tom Julian’s Timberwolf. The author has certainly managed to get this point across in quite entertainging and exciting manner.

This looks like space opera, and I’ve enjoyed several of this author’s fantasy novels. Free for now, unlikely to be permafree as it is over 1000 pages.

About The Fleet Quintet:
An unconventional sci-fi series in which the story isn’t linear and the books aren't sequential. On some worlds, the tech is laughably low. The hero used to be an evil entity and the heroine hides in a library. They first appear to meet inside her head. The alien enemy can’t be seen and the invasion takes so long that no one notices for several centuries. The only real angel has no wings. The strongest theme is that of immortality yet few can remember much about anything. The prevalent church is called SPIT with a lesser cult known as TRVTH, though neither know the truth about the Fleet. There’s no time travel but two of the main characters are thrown about in time. Dark themes covering metaphysics, religion and supernatural existentialism run parallel to the darkest humour, while different layers of space are explored, exploited or torn to pieces. But the greatest theme of all is love – written against a vast backdrop of shadowy entities whose purpose is never clear. Those entities are the Fleet.

There have been 33 free eBook units ordered during this promotion so far this weekend so I think it's set up okay. I hope it ends up working for you. Perhaps you could put it in your cart and just clear it if it doesn't show as free.
Thanks again. Cheers!
Teresa wrote: "Amazon doesn’t show it as free, at least right now. You might want to double check that."

The good news, it's the 5th day of a 5-day promotion and still getting the occasional unit being ordered. Gotta love the goodreads community. Thanks to you all!
@Teresa: let me know if you would like a pdf or something you could read and where I can send it. It wouldn't have that wonderful cover my illustrator did but otherwise it would be complete.
Thanks again for your efforts and interest.
Teresa wrote: "Very strange, it’s still telling me Kindle price is 99 cents. Shrug."
Aha! Now it says free. I assume that the update took a while to propagate through the database server farm.

A light hearted romp around the seedier parts of the galaxy, said one reviewer... Captain Frank Eric Russell had everything going for him - until a careless moment ruined his reputation and career. Re assigned to a less prestigious unit, given less glamorous (ie more dangerous) missions and a somewhat well used ship, Frank discovers that the life of a scout pilot is full of interest. Not in a good way, either.
First in a growing collection.

Free on Amazon Kindle from 11/01/19 to 15/01/19
Shawn Beamish is a young pilot happily working as a freight transporter on Wenlock, a primeval planet undergoing terraforming for future human colonisation. Timid, with few friends, Shawn has followed his scientist parents from one new planet to the next, never settled for long or resident on well populated 24th century human worlds. Happiest when flying, he has achieved his initial dream of attaining flight approval but has a newer, bigger dream to realise. One fateful day he gets his chance, his one good friend has wangled the opportunity for him. However, it ends up going horribly wrong and Shawn finds himself light years away and potentially the only surviving member of his family. How will the first contact with an alien species develop from its violent start and will Shawn discover his family’s fate?
The follow-up, Gene Weavers: The Faleen Factions is also on a countdown deal over the same dates.
