I used to read primarily escapist fiction until the late eighties, when I read
. It changed my reading life. After reading about 1/3 of the entries in that book, my horizons were expanded greatly, and I found that I could read, enjoy, and comprehend any book short of an arcane scientific text.
Now I usually get bored unless I'm reading something informative, or literary fiction that requires some effort from the reader. Simple linear storytelling doesn't often do the trick any more.

In high school, I read many of the classics that weren't required reading. My reading choices were largely influenced by my older brother and I wanted to impress him with what I knew (still do). He have me a large base of reading from which to work.
Now I read based on my mood. And I can be capricious.

Now I have almost no time to read and have little patience for bad writing. I'm also not a great fan of romance or paranormal romance or literary fiction that is try so hard to be literary it forgets about plot or story-telling and the characters are created from a collection of quirks.
