Some of my old favorites are:
The Lost World & Other Stories
The Time Machine
The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep
And Ursula LeGuin...I have too many favorites of her's and it makes it all the more special that she is a Portland author. But of all her books, I would say 4 were most impactful on science-fiction/fantasty.
Earthsea Trilogy
The Dispossessed
The Left Hand of Darkness
The Lathe of Heaven
Ooh! I second The Left Hand of Darkness and the Earthsea Trilogy, but also - The Wind's Twelve Quarters, which contains two LeGuin stories I've never forgotten - Direction of the Road and The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas.
