We get a lot of Luke using the Force in this book. What do you think about how the Force is portrayed?

I actually like it quite a bit. I think anything with the force is neat and I like seeing different authors interpret the force in different ways. This takes me back to our discussion on the force and magic

It just seems like he is overusing it. Like he can't do anything without "reaching out with the Force".

He is very Deanna Troi like with all his reading of people's feelings.

Also his use of the Force to see through Wedge's eyes was very unique. Don't remember seeing that power used elsewhere in the EU.

Travis I agree with Aaron. Luke's definitely not shy about scanning people's minds in this book. And his calming of Han at the end of chapter 7 felt verging on to the Dark Side.

Derek Gatz (derekgatz) | 96 comments luke tells gariel that he cant read minds but senses emotions and lives his life pretty much like anyone else other than that. do you think he was fibbing or he really believes that. can he read minds?

Another use that I just came across that was surprising was Luke's ability to look into the future. That seems like a power that maybe he shouldn't have yet considering he is barely a Jedi. Plus I don't seem to remember him using it in future books. Or does he and I'm just not remembering?

Scott Hume | 7 comments Aaron - don't forget he had a 'vision' of the future while on Dagobah in ESB. That is what led him to leave Yoda and go to Cloud City to 'rescue' Han and Leia (Irony, thy name is Skywalker).

The last time I read this book was when it was first released in 1994. It was interesting re-reading it now, in light of what we've since learned about the Force (and midi-chlorians) in the prequels, Clone Wars, and subsequent EU. At the time, very little was known about the true nature of the Force and what abilities you would have as a true Jedi.

Amanda Ramos | 5 comments Aaron, using the force to see through wedges eyes, jacen does it once although I cant remember which book it was in

Travis Luke seems overly concerned with the Dark Side in the closing chapters, specifically on the Ssi-ruuk cruiser. He acts like any act of aggression will tip him over. I guess he's still reacting to his confrontation with the Emperor.

Derek Gatz (derekgatz) | 96 comments luke has a moral compass that exist outside his belief in the force, the force just makes him more focused on it.
