Ákos (eranor) | 8 comments Hi

There are many series, which have translations with various volume counts. I've seen, that instead of adding the book to the original series, new ones are created.

Is that becouse the different volume counts, or just for transparency or another reason?

Empress (the_empress) Do NOT post REQUESTS to librarians in this topic.

THANK YOU for asking this. I would also like to know.

I personally think all the series should be in one page (series), with the same series name and numbering. BUT, I'm not sure what is the policy on having a separate series for the different languages and would also like a clear rule or a statement on how to handle those.

An Example would be this series:
https://www.goodreads.com/series/4331...

It's a trilogy but the first two book are broken into parts of 2, 3 and 4 for the different languages. Sometimes people make series for the different language giving them a different numbering - that I'm not sure is entirely correct since those are still translated as parts of books to my native language.
So the new numbering will count each part for an individual book and will add the "original" books for omnibus versions.

Ákos (eranor) | 8 comments I did the same (or just started, becouse there are much more volumes to add) with the hungarian translation of the Wheel of Time series, by Robert Jordan. But when I combine the books, that I think are the same edition, but I can't change the order of the series per book. (looks like the "move up" is bugged).

Just having one series would be fix this, but with some translations - especially the german, which has some parts broken to 2, some to 3 and others to 4 volumes - would be hard to do. Also I don't want to ruin someones library, by changing everything.
Yes a policy would be good. :)

Empress (the_empress) Yes, waiting for detailed explanation from Rivka.

Susie (dragonsusie) | 2469 comments I can understand when the translated series is completely different, having a different series. A good example of this would be with Jane Welch books, where she has three series written in English, but when they were translated into German, the German series was completely different. So sometimes, when there is completely different numbering and placement, it's easier to have separate series.

However, when the books are just split but still count as the same series, effectively, then there appears to be two camps - one group who put them under the main series, with the split numbering, and another who put them in a separate series. There appears to be no consistency on it.

I am sure there is confusion, but they should be a single series.

Empress (the_empress) Does it mean that other series where the series name is not in English should be deleted?

That depends on which of the cases Susie enumerated above they fall onto. If they are a duplicate of the English series (assuming the book was originally published in English), then yes. Names of a series in other languages can be added to the series description.

Susie (dragonsusie) | 2469 comments That reminds me, actually - we were having a discussion recently about alternate numbering for series where one is publication order and the other is suggested-reading order. In some cases there are two series for this, in others just one with the alternate numbering listed (which I think is most likely preferable). Found the discussion, here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/....

It would be very useful to have this info in the Librarian Manual!

Anyone can start a thread in the folder for changes to the Manual. First post usually has your suggestions for what the Manual should say.

Discussion then ensues.

Although I don't know that there is a consistent policy on that, so maybe a thread in the Policy folder first would be better.

Hmmm, will think on that one, then, and perhaps start something up later.

Yes, that's correct - GR authors don't have the same abilities as librarians and one of the things they can't do is modify series.

Anyway, it's done, but next time please start a new topic for unrelated requests - this one is discussing how series should be handled and isn't for series addition requests.

Empress (the_empress) It would be nice if we can add something to the manual, Susie please post a link here if/when you start a discussion about it.

I just want to say that in my opinion in most cases having separate series for different order is redundant, but I've seen series that are just too vast to put an alternative order in the description.
I do think there should be one series that hold all the series books.

Susie (dragonsusie) | 2469 comments I will certainly post a link up once I get around to it. Might be tomorrow or in the weekend, depending on when I get time to pool all my thoughts together.
