I have both - and I really do prefer the Eink option. You can read it in full sunlight with no issues. I went for the Kindle Paperwhite, as I do a lot of my reading at night, but I seriously love it, it's so much easier on my eyes, so I can read for longer.
I agree with Mikana. I use my ipad because I have several library apps for borrowing books. I change the background to sepia which makes it easier to read but it is really tough to read outside. Also have a refurb paperwhite which I prefer and would use all the time if it had the library apps available.
I think when and where you read does make a difference, but a backlit e-ink device probably is the best of both worlds. It works great in full sunlight, but it can work at night without having to have a reading light. I got my wife a paperwhite and she loves it. I have a 10" tablet because I use it for many things, including reading (with varying color schemes based on conditions), but I also have a classic original Nook that I still prefer for places where I'll be in full sun, or where I would worry about keeping my tablet safe.

It's backlit devices that are supposedly bad for the eyes.

Sorry, yes, you are correct. I meant a built-in light, so that you can use the device directly without another source of light like a book light (which my old Nook requires).
