Synopsis: I found this book to be very interesting and quite entertaining. I never knew so much about Albert Einstein, of course I knew the general things but I was amazed at how little I really knew about one of the most important and influential men in all of history.
On the back cover of the book there is a preface and a few comments. In the preface it says “On these pages we come to know Albert Einstein, the “backward” child, the academic outcast, the reluctant world celebrity, the exile, the pacifist, the philosopher, the humanitarian, the tragically saddened “father” of the atomic bomb, and above all, the unceasing searcher after scientific truth….” This is what first caught my attention, I knew what the author meant by a few of these different titles, but not many.
I knew that Einstein was known as the “father” of the atomic bomb because he suggested the idea to President Roosevelt, I also knew that he was a pacifist which explained why the affect and damage from the atomic bomb upset him so much. I had heard that Einstein was not a fan of the lime light. Other than that I didn’t really get the other titles.
From this book I learned that even from a young age Einstein did things in strange ways. He did not start talking until he was older than three years old before he started to talk, he also quit school to roam Europe and have fun, at the age of 16 he applied to collage.
One of my favorite parts of the book is actually what Einstein did for his doctoral thesis. Einstein wrote Folgerungen aus den Capillaritätserscheinungen for his doctoral thesis, he also submitted it to Annalen der Physik a popular German scientific journal. Unfortunately, Einstein’s original thesis was rejected, so he simply added one sentence and resubmitted it. This earned him his doctoral degree from the University of Zurich.
