Lou | 7 comments Hi

I'm trying to remember the name of a book I read around 1998-2002 (but likely to have been written before then) about a cat who wanted to become a wizard's cat and so learned to talk? I remember at the beginning of the book he took English lessons and learned "how now brown cow" but it came out with a "meow".

He eventually got a job as a wizard's cat but the wizard was quite comically awful and the cat saved the say more than once. At the end of the novel, an evil wizard has taken over a castle and infested the place with snakes - but the cat and the wizard rescue everyone.

The book was illustrated and the drawings were quite like those by Michael Rosen (could even have been by him?).

It's definitely not The Wizard's Cat... I've been searching for this book for years and I haven't been able to find it. Can anyone help? Please!?

I only had it in hardback and it had a purple cover with the wizard and his cat.

Stephen (havan) | 151 comments When I read your query I wondered if you might have meant this

The Cat in the Cradle (Loka Legends, #1) by Jay Bell by The Cat in the Cradle by Jay Bell

Purple cover? Check
Talking cat? check
young mage? check
Cover (and I think some interior illustrations) done by the author's boyfriend (now husband)

The evil wizard does take over a number of castles too as I recall.

Lemme know if this IS it.
But it's published much later than what you're thinking. Any chance you saw some early version?

Lou | 7 comments Unfortunately not, thanks though!

0possum | 70 comments One possibility is A Malady of Magicks by Craig Garder. It involves a wizard's apprentice and a cat.

another option is one of many books by Christopher Stasheff. There's one called The Feline Wizard with a purple cover (no wizard on it though). He's written quite a few books, several involve hapless wizards. You could see if any of those match.

Lou | 7 comments Have had a good look and I'm afraid it's neither of them, but thank you so much for your suggestions. I fear I'm never going to find out what it is!!

Historic_Heroine | 74 comments Were the illustrations in color or black and white? Lots of illustrations or just a few scattered ones? Approximate reading level of the book?

message 7: by Lou (new)

Lou | 7 comments Black and white aside from the front cover, and a few scattered throughout. Early teen/young adult reading level. Quite humorous/sarcastic writing.

Lou, I see quite a few books by Michael Rosen but is he an illustrator too? His CV only mentions writing. Can you link to an example of what the style of illustrations was?

It's actually Quentin Blake, not Michael Rosen at all! Got myself mixed up. Kind of along the lines of the images in the link below, but I don't think it was actually Quentin Blake who did the illustrations.

Historic_Heroine | 74 comments I got really excited when I found:

The Cat Who Wished to Be a Man by Lloyd Alexander

Purple cover with a cat and wizard? Awesome. But alas the description doesn't fit at all! I'll keep looking.

It's so amazing of you all to help! I've been looking for is book for about ten years. Cleared my loft out a few years ago and was convinced I'd come across it but I never did. Must have loaned it to a younger cousin/sibling/friend at some point and never got it back :(

The Book of Night with Moon (Cat Wizards, #1) by Diane Duane

On Her Majesty's Wizardly Service (Cat Wizards, #2) by Diane Duane

The publication date of these would fit, but the cover art isn't the right style.

Not either of these I'm afraid. Thank you though.
