Tony | 5 comments I read a novel in the early 80s about a little boy named Simon (I think) who died in an accident and came back from the dead. He terrorized and maybe ended up killing his parents. Seems like there was a lot of discussion about him in his coffin. I could have sworn it was by Thomas Tryon, but apparently not. Still, the author's name may be similar. I *think* there may have been a reference to the moon in the title of the book. Read this when I was about 10, so the details are fuzzy. Seem to remember something about the little boy's nails growing into claws. Anybody know what book this might be? (Not Pet Semetary)

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments Lost by Gary Devon doesn't quite fit. The boy's name is Sherman.

Was this a book for children, teens, or adults?
Anything about the cover?
Part of a series?

Tony | 5 comments It was an adult book. I don't remember any thing else. Read this sometime between 1979 and 1983. Best guess is maybe around 81. Cover was blue/black...maybe depicted a night scene.

slauderdale | 182 comments Weirdly, when I ran a search for "simon" "died in an accident" claws moon I got a book called Where the Moon Isn't by Nathan Filer that was published in 2013. Still, I raise it here if only so that it can be ruled out early on.

slauderdale | 182 comments Is it The Moonchild by Kenneth McKenney? Cross-referencing Goodreads, Amazon, and GoogleBooks, I'm not finding all of the information in any one place, but just look at the cover. (Search 978-0345359896 on Amazon if the image below doesn't show.)

ETA: I should say the two separate covers, since they both look promising. This book was originally published in 1978.

Tony | 5 comments Yes! Thank you, thank you! You found it. Yes, it's that second one.

No idea how I thought the author's name was similar to Tryon, but I guess that's the memory of a 10-yr-old 30 years later.

You rock, dude!

Is there a way for me to move this to the solved thread?

slauderdale | 182 comments Since you created the original post, there should be a tiny "edit" at the end of the title at the top of the thread, and then I think you type "SOLVED" at the front of the title (so the new title of the thread would become "SOLVED. 70s/80s horror novel about a boy named Simon who comes back from the dead"), and then you move it to the "Adult Fiction-SOLVED" folder.

ETA:

Also, YAY! This is the first time I've actually solved one. 8D

Tony | 5 comments Got it, thanks! Maybe you haven't solved any others, but you sure solved the hell out of this one, and it wasn't easy.

slauderdale | 182 comments ...well, thank you for asking about it, because it sounds fun. I'm putting it on my "To Read" list.
