I have a feeling the movie combined a lot of the ideas from the books, since they are all rather shorter and about actually having a dragon versus getting one. I am eager to read them still! Can't find them super cheap digitally!

Brian Schnoor | 3 comments Hi, I'm new to the group. I hope this hasn't been mentioned yet. I am a fan of Carl Hiaasen's quirky and humorous mysteries. His books are meant to be somewhat absurd and exaggerated in order to be funny and yet they make a statement about our current culture and the often off-beat craziness of life in Florida. One such book of his was a clever and funny novel entitled 'Striptease'. It was classic Hiaasen. It was funny and smart, everything the movie starring Demi Moore and Burt Reynolds was not. Whenever I tell people that the book Striptease was good, they have two things to say 1) I can't believe that was a book and 2) I can't believe it was a good book, that movie was horrible. Well, it was a book, and it was a good book. Worth a read if you're looking for something light and funny, but don't rent the movie.

Sam | 606 comments wow yep didn't know it was a book first :P Think I will add Striptease to my TBR if you say its better than the movie :D thanks for letting us know!

Cate (The Professional Fangirl) (chaostheory08) | 458 comments I liked both book and movie for The Spectacular Now. Sutter was more of a loser in the book than in the movie.

I know I posted it other places...but I was super excited to see the TV show The 100(Hundred) is a series!! I just started it this weekend! :)

Sam | 606 comments How many books are in the series The Hundred?

Two so far. The third comes out next month! :)

For The Love of Books (clsipes) For those of you who are Michael Crichton fans, the movies Sphere, Timeline, and Lost World are also books that he wrote. The TV show ER was based on a nonfiction piece he wrote called Five Patients.

And for the record, I read the unabridged version of Les Miserables before seeing the movie version of the musical. It is by far one of my most favorite books of all time; daunting yes, but TOTALLY worth it.

Finally, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - when you combine all five books into one volume - does look big but it is also well worth the read just for the campy British humor. It's a classic in my mind. :-)

You managed to get through Les Mis? I'm stuck on the Bishop, I find him to be a dull character, but I'm trying to make myself read it because I do now that he ends up being an important character.

Cee (The Mistress Case) (themistresscase) The things you learn. Lol.

Cate (The Professional Fangirl) (chaostheory08) | 458 comments ^ ALVH was a better book. Although my mom also enjoyed the movie.

I watched Sphere when it first came out(I was in like middle school I think) so I did not know it was a book. I read it last summer though and it was AMAZING! Even with knowing what was going to happen some thanks to the movie it was still totally great. And the ending in the book was WAY better than the movie. It left me feeling so mad and annoyed and kind of scared too! So great! Made me want to go back and read Congo and Jurassic Park and all the others of his I never read and saw the movies for.

I enjoy Sphere as a movie but I do love the book much more BECAUSE of the better ending. I would highly recommend reading his other books (that are movies). They don't disappoint.

For The Love of Books (clsipes) Also, yes I did make it through the unabridged version of Les Miserables. I loved it so much and I plan to read it again one day. It took me three weeks, but to be fair, I do work a 7 on/7 off schedule so every other week, I have the whole week off with which to do whatever I want. This includes spending three or four days glued to the couch with a book in my hands.

Aran (aranjournal) | 5 comments I just found out the movie Stardust was a book first. And I loved the movie back then when it was premiered. I'm SO gonna read the book.

message 169: by Sam (new)

Sam | 606 comments Wow I didn't know stardust was a book! have you read it yet? any good?

message 170: by Aran (new)

Aran (aranjournal) | 5 comments I wanted to read it but I couldn't find the book on any store!! Everyone that I know loved the book, though. If you read it anytime soon, let me know!

message 171: by Sam (new)

Sam | 606 comments will do :) sounds like it will be a treasure hunt to find it... like a fallen star ;)

Katy | 6 comments Sadly, I just found out that my favorite movie of all time was a book. It is Jurassic Park, and I am deeply disappointed with myself and hopefully I will read it soon.

Cate (The Professional Fangirl) (chaostheory08) | 458 comments Yea, Stir of Echoes. I was surprised to see a copy of that book in a used bookstore. I didn't know it was a book.

I'm right there with you! I was 8 when it came out and have loved the movie my whole life. But, it wasn't until I was a little older that I learned it was a book, and not until recently that I decided to go back and read it. I've been so busy I stopped about half way and haven't gone back to it. Thankfully I just got it on audio book and hopefully that will help me finish it one of these days!

message 177: by Toviel (new)

Toviel (exagge) For the longest time, I didn't know that The Black Cauldron (an oft-forgotten Disney film) was based off a book. Haven't found the time to read it, though.

There are waaaay too many Vietnam War flicks that I didn't know were based off of books until just a year or two ago, such as Full Metal Jacket or First Blood.

message 178: by Autumn Rose (new)

Autumn Rose Dearborn (autumnrosenoseinbooks) This has happened to me soooo many times! Just to name a few, because I couldn't possible remember them all, there was I Capture The Castle, Pride And Prejudice (I'm very ashamed to say), Gone With The Wind, The Secret Garden, Girl Interrupted, The outsiders, Etc etc etc!!! I get a little angry when I find out the movie was based on a book because Ive always preferred to read the books FIRST. I'll just have to go and read all of the books to my favorit movies now. I'm currently reading Pride and Prejudic by Jane Austen.

And I just realized this is a pretty old thread. Oh well.. Post.

Kasia | 28 comments I watched the movie 'The Room' and I loved it and then a few days later a saw the book in a shop and I was so shocked. I'm going to have to read the book now but its a shame because I usually prefer reading the books first...

Cate (The Professional Fangirl) (chaostheory08) | 458 comments Oh, I loved Room. I picked it up as soon as it originally came out. The movie was well-made too.

message 182: by [deleted user] (new)

I never knew Jaws and Jurassic Park were books as well, I assumed they were only movies. It's sad because those are some of my favorite movies.

message 183: by Saumya (new)

Saumya | 6 comments So I don't know whether it could be classified as a great movie or if it is a great book, but just the fact that it is a book surprised me. Surprised not disappointed (since I haven't read the book). PITCH PERFECT. Was this a thing?
