And then you throw in things like in my city, you don't get free plastic bags anymore. Okay, not entirely true you can, for places like the butcher or fish shops, where the produce can leak blood. But otherwise you pay 10-15c for a plastic bag. Means we all have to bring cloth or canvas bags with us all the time to do the shopping, you pay several dollars just for the bags. But we don't have bags clogging up the house, or more importantly the waterways and floating through the parks and streets.
But to make a mat now, I would have to pay more for the bags than I would for a normal bathmat!!
Agree Jmom, what wonderful news for your sister in law, and your whole family!
Most of the grocery stores have a container where you can put all your used plastic bags and they go to be recycled. I also donate some to the library where they use them when people need a bag for their books. And thrift shops take them to use.
That One Tile Ahead bunch is trying to make things easier for themselves. Hah! NO add-ons such as S, ED, ING to make another word from an existing word.
Example:
S can't be added to Queen to make Queens. Queens would have to connect on its own.
As I have had to tell them, making things too easy is not in the QUEEN Meanie handbook.

Big culture difference though - in Japan most people go grocery shopping every day so you only need one or two "ecobags" (reusable bags) to get by. Just started this month, we'll see how it goes.
jaxnsmom wrote: " Say Queen is connected to your Q horizontally. Quiet could be connected to your Q vertically. Here's my example from an earlier post.....WAIT!!! You are saying that "QUEEN". "QUIET" and "Q" can all start in the third down position, in your example? Three titles?

My advice, just always take a bag. And being Japan you no doubt already have some funky shopping bag folded into a shape of Totoro or something already.
I may still be annoyed I didn't get a Totoro shaped shopping bag last time I was in Tokyo.

I'm SO sorry if this question has been asked but what about words with apostrophes: Where'd You Go, Bernadette
I'll do a check though to see if I missed the comment/ruling along the way.
I've always wanted to try to crochet something out of all those plastic bags. Our grocery store does have a bin to take your bags to be recycled and we donate a lot of bags to the local food pantry, they always need grocery bags for the groceries they give away.

Yes, yes, yes. ☺

Use WHERED, apostrophes are ignored.

Using the first letter of the first word of the title (excluding The, A, and An) will determine how many points your book is worth.Apologies if the question has already been asked Jmom but what if a book starts with 'I'?
I'm assuming because it wasn't in the above quote that we should record it as the first letter for part 1 and the first word for part 2, rather than exclude it. Just wanted to check, as when I was recording it on the spreadsheet it was weird just putting one letter for part 2 and realised it just wouldn't work.
Dawn wrote: "J-mom, if we run out of room on the grid board, is that it? Or can we start another?"Only one board, that makes it more equal for teams that won't read as much as others.

Yes, I would be used as first letter and first word. You probably wouldn't use it on your board unless you had no other one letter title because of the low value.
I apologize if this has already been asked, but when we are making our board and we are connecting multiple titles... ugh, I'm having trouble putting this into words, I am much more of a visual person. If connecting a word to another word, the new word touches another an existing word, is that okay? I know we can't create new words to score more points, but can there be new words or non-words on the board?
For example, since I am so visual....
....J.....
...QUALITY
...UD.....
...EG.....
...EE.....
...N......
The bold letters are the new word and touch letters on an existing word. I know we can't take more points for these new "words," but is it okay if they are there?
jaxnsmom wrote: "Sorry, but no. Wherever letters connect they must spell out one of your titles."Okay, that is what I thought but I wanted to double check. Thanks for the clarification!

SEE what jaxnsmom has in message one rules, under the SCRABBLE titles: Ending Date
Oh but
I didn't notice the date is actually Saturday not Sunday on the calendar. Checking with jmom!☻:
NEED CLARIFICATION!☺ 24th or 25th...Saturday or Sunday?
I thought we always ended on Saturday, but Almeta convinced me it was Sunday. I wonder how many people were planning on ending Sunday, and if we should do so this time. I know one of our teammates is away until the weekend is over, and don't know if her plans include reading for the Toppler on Sunday. Just putting it out there. I'm fine with Saturday.
I think Almeta was trying to trick you :) Week long Topplers have always ended on Saturday, so we'll keep it that way. I think I must have copied the rules from a 24 hour Toppler and changed the date but not the day. If there are any problems I'll consider them case by case.
Trying to trick me, eh! Well I would have read another book on Saturday, so the book I'm reading now will be last one. That's perfectly fine with me! I'll have to get my sister back for this! lol

Going for a 14-days Toppler?
Almeta and I are celebrating with frozen Margaritas. She read 14 books to my 5! And Bella, on Almeta's team read 18! I just can't keep up with that! Drowning my sorrows now! lol
I woke up with a Toppler hangover and am ready to vegetate in front of the tv for a while. I also see a nap in the near future :)
Debra wrote: "Almeta and I are celebrating with frozen Margaritas. She read 14 books to my 5! And Bella, on Almeta's team read 18! I just can't keep up with that! Drowning my sorrows now! lol"Gah! I was so proud I was able to squeeze three books in, instead of 2. You people shame me.
Lynda, you'll see that there are some people who read an amazing number of books, and there are others who read one or two. We all do what's comfortable for ourselves, and real life sometimes gets in the way :~D You did great! The main thing is to have fun, while chatting, reading, and adding way too many books to your tbr.
Thanks, Jaxnsmom, I did have fun, and glad I decided to participate. Additionally, I enjoyed the three books I did get to read!
Boards should be completed by 11 pm Tuesday night. Then I'll let the fruit machine pick the bonus squares.Everybody did a great job!!
Almeta, you always wonderful graphics, but I think you outdid yourself this time!
I pulled an all-nighter last night and finally turned out the light shortly after 4:00 this morning. I'm tired, but it was so worth it.Another great toppler, jaxnsmom! Thank you. :)

You should just disregard how much I read- I'm a freakish outlier. The goal is to have fun and to force yourself to read some books that have been languishing on your shelves. (Because you need them to fit the Toppler, you break down and read them after years of being a dust collector.)
So, you should use the Toppler as an excuse to dust off that 1,200 page book that's been sitting on your shelf and glaring at you as you walk past it. That should be your strategy on the next Toppler. Really! (Unless you're on my team...)

So glad to hear! My aunt had breast cancer, they caught it just before it hit stage 1. But she still had radiation even though they told her she didn't need it. I'm so glad my cousin badgered her- she gets fibroids and that's what she thought that was and she was going to blow off getting it tested.
