I'm pretty political as well, but I just didn't like the characters I guess? And yes, it's interesting how a book can mean so much to one person and not much to another. :D

The irony with all the slut shaming in that book was that Zoey herself was the biggest effing slut in the book. I did and still do love Stevie Rae though. Why couldn't they have made a book series about her?

Harlee | 1583 comments I became way more interested in Stevie Rae and Rephaim's (I think that was "his" name) story than Zoey's.

I seriously wish Stevie Rae was the main character.

Brigid ✩ | 738 comments @Storm - Yeah, she was quite hypocritical in that way. :P She constantly judged other girls for having sex, but then she ended up having sex with everyone and cheating on everyone she dated??

@Harlee - Yes I totally agree! I remember liking them together too, they were actually kind of cute. I remember liking Aphrodite with her boyfriend too (I totally forget his name). What's funny is that Zoey pegged Aphrodite as like "the stupid mean girl" from the first book but I feel like she ended up being a more sympathetic character than Zoey. XD

Not just that but then got UPSET when she didn't have a freaking male harem anymore.

I'm the same. I even enjoyed those aspects, and really the plot in general. Most of the characters and the, IMO, hamfisted romance just kind of killed it for me. The plot itself though is what kept it a solid 3-star read for me. The characters kept me from loving it.

message 60: by Harlee (new)

Harlee | 1583 comments @Brigid I think his name was Darius. I only remember because I think I liked him lol.

message 61: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 738 comments @Storm - Haha exactly! Wasn't there one book where she had like four boyfriends at once? And then she was sad when they all found out and broke up with her (view spoiler). I was like "wellll, what did you think would happen?!" :P

@Tommy - Agreed. The political stuff was kind of interesting but I did not like the characters and predictable romance drama and whatnot. I had the same problem with Hunger Games, honestly.

@Harlee - I was thinking his name was Darius but I wasn't entirely sure. And yes he was one of the few characters that I actually liked. :D

Yes, yes there was. The third book Chosen (view spoiler) Yeah! And then when she had the nerve to then get a crush on Stark (oh gosh I loved him, why did he have to wind up with her?) It was an all out race to get to him before Neferet but it didn't MATTER.

And yeah I liked Darius, he was one of the few guys I liked. Right next to him would be Damien and Jack.

Also... I had the fledgling handbook back in the day... Those weren't made up rituals at all. They were all lifted from Pagan folklore. In reality what they had was a book about witches with some vampire elements and just changed some spelling on the name vampire.

I have been trying to listen to Throne of Glass on audio since I had such a hard time reading it in print. I don't like the main character! I loved the prequel novellas, but I don't like her in this book. Should I keep going. Does she get better and more lovable? ;)

She never gets more lovable/better (at least to me). But you do kind of start to understand her better the longer you read.

I love Celaena! I feel like she has a lot of pain that she tries to hide with sarcasm and sass. But to each their own.

I'm going to continue. She seemed to finally open up while I was listening to it this morning so that helped!

Never finished it either. I am surprised you liked Twilight and not MI. Interesting. You are a man of mystery Tommy. hahaha

message 77: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie ahhh I agree with TMI -- I DNF'd the first one, and it depressed me because the book was so pretty.

ALSO. Poison Study. The writing was wayyy too clunky for me.

I got like 50 in the first attempt, then well over half way through the second. I tried to force myself to stay with it because the synopsis sounds so good and it sounds like a series with a lot of potential, but, man, I could not do it haha.

Welcome to the club. I have not finished City of Bones either. XD; I hear a lot of people say it's better to read The Infernal Devices first versus City of Bones and I agree. I finished Clockwork Angel (though man was that a beast of a book) and I enjoyed it a lot. I still need to finish the trilogy and I DO intend to finish at least the first three books in The Mortal Instruments someday but.. They're massive.

She is a "wordy" author. That is one of the reasons I am not a fan.

I wish I could say I usually avoid wordy books but some really long descriptions just make certain books. Like The Monstrumologist.

Descriptions in books are fine. When I say wordy I mean useless words that don't add anything to a story and/or repetitive word choices (using same descriptors over and over). Kind of reminds me of that person most everyone knows who talks just to hear themselves talk if that makes sense.
