This discussion sort of came up in the Book Series thread.

What are some beloved books or series you just couldn't get into or really didn't like?

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

Divergent,hunger games,twilight,legend.

Karen’s Library | 11320 comments Mod
I could not get past the first few chapters of Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass, #1) by Sarah J. Maas . *ducks* Maybe it was my mood. I've had no urge to pick it up and try it again.

Another was The Monstrumologist (The Monstrumologist, #1) by Rick Yancey . Eep. BUT, I am starting that one again as a buddy read today with Rose. I'm hoping it was my mood! ;)

Never ever going to read the Fifty Shades of Grey. I just don't like sex in my books. That's why.

I'm sure I have others but these popped out to me first.

What are yours?

Good ones, Oda! I had a love hate relationship with Divergent! But did love the rest! ;)

Ashley Marie I couldn't get into TOG either Karen! Angelfall was another one. EVERYONE loved it but me!

yupp, hated angelfall as well.

Rose (The_Calm_Reader) (roselittlebookowl75) | 1372 comments I LOVE Throne of Glass series!!

I couldn't get into Outlander at all. I tried desparately. I read the first 50 pages and there was so much Scottish brogue and I just couldn't do it. I will never read 50 Shades of Gray. I'm on Chapter 2 of The Monstrumologist and I'm wondering if I'm gonna be able to handle the gore but we shall see as I love the mystery component of it.

message 8: by Harlee (new)

Harlee | 1583 comments I loved the Throne of Glass series! I still need to get Queen of Shadows.
I loved Divergent but I only liked Insurgent. I got spoiled over the end of Allegiant so I never bothered reading it.
I couldn't make myself read the last two books in The Mortal Instruments series. That was a series I enjoyed but I didn't love Jace and Clary after the fourth book.

Outlander, oh yes I agree... I tried reading the first 5 books, well skimmed 2-5. I just felt they were too slow and too long.

message 10: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie Divergent and Maze Runner were two other ones I couldn't get into -- Maze Runner in particular was like pulling teeth, especially by the end.

message 11: by Harlee (new)

Harlee | 1583 comments @Ashley The Death Cure I had to kind of force myself to get through. The series was alright but I wasn't in love with it.

message 12: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 738 comments I also have to say Throne of Glass. Didn't like the first book much and didn't try the rest of the series, although a lot of people have told me it gets much better, so ... I don't know, maybe someday I will give the second one a shot. :P I liked the first Divergent book (at least at the time I read it), but disliked books two and three. Same thing pretty much happened to me with The Maze Runner––liked the first book okay, hated the second book and never read the third one.

Besides that, some other popular books that disappointed me:

Hunger Games
Matched
Shatter Me
Under The Never Sky
The 5th Wave
Steelheart
Hopeless
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children
Red Queen

message 13: by Harlee (new)

Harlee | 1583 comments Me too, for Shatter Me. I didn't love it the first time I read it. I bought the second and third books, reread Shatter Me and was actually excited to read Unravel Me but I couldn't get into it and gave up.

message 14: by Harlee (new)

Harlee | 1583 comments And Miss Peregrines. I wasn't a fan of that book, I didn't really like the main character.

message 15: by Heather (new)

Heather (hersecretsmile) | 290 comments Outlander. I completed it but it took me at least half a year, maybe more.

Also Shatter Me. I started it and could not really get into it.

message 16: by Tommy (new)

Tommy Hancock (tommyhancock) | 957 comments The only one coming to mind is the Legend series for me. And I didn't even hate it or anything, just... meh.

I'm sure there's more. If I figure them out, I'll post here haha.

message 17: by Storm (new)

Storm Arashi (stormarashi) | 1130 comments Across the Universe... I read the whole book.... It made me SO angry which saddens me as I really wanted to like it, people rave about it all the time but it made me so MAD.

message 18: by Victoria (last edited Oct 10, 2015 09:35PM) (new)

Victoria S | 8 comments Ready Player One, I tried to read this book twice... The 1st time I read a few pages, I just couldn't get into it. I couldn't understand the references to video-games and stopped. Then I just kept hearing amazing reviews recommending it to "everybody!", people saying that "anybody can read it", I picked it up again, and...gave up around 50 pages in...

I'm not saying is a bad book, the concept is awesome, I wanna see the movie so badly, but I don't think this book is for everybody, it's for people who are really into 80' pop culture and video games... I feel like the movie is not going to be so focused on that, to make it more enjoyable for the general audience.

message 19: by Anna 'Bookbuyer' (new)

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) Mortal Instruments was not for me. I tried once or twice and I'm going to try again sometime. But couldn't get into it. >.<

Victoria Zigler (toriz) | 4472 comments There are several popular series I've decided not to bother reading. But only one comes to mind that I read and didn't fall in love with, or at least think was great... The white Rabbit Chronicles.

I mean, I didn't exactly hate it, but almost everyone else seems to think it's amazing, while I only think it wasn't too bad, and was actually a bit disappointed by it.

Karen’s Library | 11320 comments Mod
I agree with Shatter Me and Outlander. And I've picked up Miss Peregrine’s several times too but just couldn't get interested enough after a couple of chapters to continue.

Outlander, I think I made it in about 40% on audio (just couldn't do the print) and if I want a book to help me fall asleep, I'll throw that one on just to listen to the narrator's soothing voice. I gave up on the book itself though.

message 22: by Tommy (new)

Tommy Hancock (tommyhancock) | 957 comments It's weird, I loved Miss Peregrine's, my friend who recommended it loved it as well. Aside from us two, I've only seen people either dislike it or think it was just okay.

It's weird. I'm absolutely positive there are tons of other people who love it, but I very rarely encounter them.

Karen did you try Monstrumologist on audio? That is the only way to go with that series IMO. Sometimes if I don't like a book in print I try it on audio and it is much better (sometimes - not always). That is how I got myself through the entire Twilight series (which I am sure by now it is clear I was not a fan of). Every time I tried to read the book in print I got so irritated with her wordy writing style and lack of a thesaurus that I wanted to throw it across the room but the audio helped tamp some of that down for me.

message 24: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 2372 comments I am interested that there are others here that did not love books I didn't like either!! Sometimes I feel like I am on my own island because I can be rather picky so it is refreshing when I am not alone :)

I have a whole shelf here tiled "books everyone loved but me" and here are a few from my shelf:

Mortal Instruments
Divergent
The Giver
Partials
We Were Liars
Ender's Game
Outlander
Beautiful Creatures (I want my time back)
Twilight
Maze Runner
Beautiful Disaster

Outlander needed serious editing. Waaaaaaay too long.

I agree that the audio for RP1 was fantastic but I also don't think I would necessarily recommend it for "everyone" as the reviews Victoria found stated -- I think either you need to be a gamer or familiar with 80s pop culture to really appreciate it, which is probably what accounts for a lot of the lower-starred reviews I've seen of it.

Good point. I grew up in the 80's so loved all the references but if I didn't understand those references I am sure it would have been less enjoyable for me.

It was because of the 80's references that I loved it so much!! ;)

I totally agree with everything on this list but Twilight although that one I stopped liking as much when all those fans took it to a fan crazy level. I'm also going to add Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass, #1) by Sarah J. Maas Matched (Matched, #1) by Ally Condie Fallen (Fallen, #1) by Lauren Kate Marked (House of Night #1) by P.C. Cast Hush, Hush (Hush, Hush, #1) by Becca Fitzpatrick Across the Universe (Across the Universe, #1) by Beth Revis and anything by Nicholas Sparks to that list. Mostly, I think YA has seriously lowered their standards while other type of books have raised theirs. Oy.

I also totally forgot Falling Kingdoms (Falling Kingdoms, #1) by Morgan Rhodes

I didn't grow up in the 80s(well, I grew to early toddler years in the 80s haha) but I did grow up with 80s video games and movies. I suddenly want to read this book much more haha.

message 37: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie I haven't touched Hush Hush or Fallen mainly because I don't like the choice of character names lol. Lost interest in the House of Night series after book five or six, and then a few years later I was thinking about it in retrospect and realized how very problematic it was, with all the slut-shaming and overload of pop culture references :p

I read the first 5 Mortal Instruments and hated myself the whole way. I love the world Clare created, but her characters and writing are lacking. I ended up starting to count how many times Clary bit her lip and tasted blood or how many times she saw Jace's washboard abs. It got to be pretty ridiculous.

I noticed the writing was choppy the first time I read it, but I felt like it contributed to the story.

Sophia (Bookwyrming Thoughts) (hannahsophialin) The Fifth Wave and Delirium. I may have forgotten others. o_o

EDIT: Marked by P.C. Cast was good, but the books later on in the series just grew worse and worse. -_-

omg yes, how did I forget House of Night? I actually liked the first couple books when they came out, and then after that they were just ... absolutely horrible. For some reason I read like the first 7 or 8 books, though. Honestly I think it was because I just wanted to see how much more ridiculous they could get, but at some point it just wasn't even funny anymore. :P

And yes, they're really problematic with slut-shaming, stereotyping, etc. and the pop-culture references are cringe-worthy. I once read an interview with the authors where they said they were angry that they were making all these references to "Glee" and never got a reference back. *headsmack*

That one was a disappointment for me, too. I had really high expectations after I'd heard so many good things about it ... but yeah, I thought the first book was just okay, and then I read the second one and didn't like it much so I didn't bother with the third one.
