Jill (dogbotsmum) | 2687 comments Could we add on the 4th Campion Police at the Funeral to that list for July /August

Sounds good to me, Jill. I want to continue Campion and Blake. Police at the Funeral sounds like a more typical murder mystery than previous books I have read. Mind you, no morning tea? That would drive me to crime!

I'd also be happy to read more Campion with the group.

Me too. When I first read GA fiction about 40 years ago, I loved Marsh and didn't really take to Allingham. This time round, I find Campion far more engaging than Alleyn. Interesting how our tastes change as we grow older.

I too didn't like Campion when I first read him, but I am warming to the series now.

March/April: The Beast Must Die: Nicholas Blake
March/April: Black Orchids: Rex Stout
April/May: An Expert in Murder: Nicola Upson
May/June: Look to the Lady: Margery Allingham
June/July: Information Received: E.R. Punshon
June/July: The Smiler With the Knife: Nicholas Blake
July/August: Police at the Funeral: Margery Allingham

An updated list of buddy reads. Have I missed anything?

I am looking forward to the Upson next month - wonder if that will be another series we want to pursue?

message 257: by Jan C (new)

Jan C (woeisme) | 1820 comments The Upson series is much shorter, though; at least so far.

message 258: by Susan (new)

Susan | 13274 comments Mod
I have only read the first one and that was a while ago, Jan. I never read on, but perhaps that was just because there are SO many series and I didn't get round to it.

I think there are 7 in the Upson series

Talking of series, are we continuing with Michael Innes? The third is Lament for a Maker?

Rosina (rosinarowantree) | 1135 comments Susan wrote: "Talking of series, are we continuing with Michael Innes? The third is Lament for a Maker?"

I'd like that - it's a book I already have (as Kindle).

Great, Rosina. Anyone else interested?

I'd be up for that one as I snapped it up on Kindle recently. I rather liked Appleby.

message 270: by Susan (new)

Susan | 13274 comments Mod
Good to hear, Leslie. I am also looking forward to reading on with the Allingham and trying the first in the Punshon series. I am always happy to encourage people to read Nicholas Blake. I would say that those who have tried his books have enjoyed them, although The Smiler With the Knife is more of a thriller than a crime novel.

message 271: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) | 1036 comments I notice that a buddy read of Allingham’s Look to the Lady is soon to begin. I believe this book is also published as The Gyrth Chalice Mystery.

Just a reminder that our next buddy read is:

May/June: Look to the Lady: Margery Allingham

I will open the thread this weekend

message 275: by Elinor (new)

Elinor | 37 comments In June I'm planning a "favorite author / series" month as a sort of gift for my birthday ^^ As for mysteries, I would like to read : The Weed That Strings the Hangman's Bag, Murder on the Orient Express and Death in the Stocks (Inspector Hannasyde, if someone would be interested to read one of them along me :)

message 276: by Judy (new)

Judy (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejudyg) | 11189 comments Mod
Elinor, we have previously read Death in the Stocks if you want to look up the thread (sorry, can't post a link on my tablet.) I believe Murder on the Orient Express is coming up later this year in the Poirot buddy reads which Jessica is organizing.

message 277: by Jill (new)

Jill (dogbotsmum) | 2687 comments Here is the thread :- https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

I don't think we had a spoiler thread then.

message 278: by Susan (new)

Susan | 13274 comments Mod
Yes, Murder on the Orient Express is December, I believe?

Elinor, I have only read the first Flavia De Luce book, but that was years ago. I think Weed that Strings is the second book? Perhaps if you suggest the first in the series and then the second a month or two later? I would certainly join in with those and we have spaces in October and November...

message 279: by Elinor (new)

Elinor | 37 comments I will post on the previous read post for Death in the Stocks. I may also find another Christie to read next month in order to read Murder on the Orient Express later on with you. As for Flavia De Luce, I think I will do like you said Susan but for reading the third one with you ^^

That would mean Sept/Oct would be The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie (Flavia de Luce, #1) by Alan Bradley

Is there any interest in reading this as a buddy read? I will slot it in if there is. If not, maybe Elinor can just open the thread for the book she wants to read, whenever she wants to start it?

Love the series but I am current and have too much of a backlog for a reread. I might remember enough to participate in general discussions.

message 283: by Jill (new)

Jill (dogbotsmum) | 2687 comments I've read the first two so if it gets to book 3 I will join in

Maybe Elinor can just do book 3 then? I would need to re-read the first two and doubt I will have time, but - if Elinor wants to jump ahead and set up the buddy read for the book she chose, then that's fine.

Elinor, if you need any help setting up the thread, then just let us know and we'll help you.

Jill (dogbotsmum) | 2687 comments I was wondering if anything was decided on Mr. Bowling Buys a Newspaper .It did get 11 votes in the poll but was only third

message 286: by Susan (new)

Susan | 13274 comments Mod
It seems Mr Bowling was hard to get outside the UK, Jill, but I would like to read it. Buddy reads so far -

June/July: The Smiler With the Knife by Nicholas Blake.

July/August: Police at the Funeral by Margery Allingham

July/August: The Mystery at Underwood House by Clara Benson

August/Sept: Lament for a Maker by Michael Innes.

We could slot Mr Bowling in Sept/Oct if there is any interest? If you would like to read it, Jill, I will happily Buddy Read it with you and we may get some other members interested?

message 287: by Jan C (new)

Jan C (woeisme) | 1820 comments I would join you, since I was able to find it.

message 288: by Jill (new)

Jill (dogbotsmum) | 2687 comments Sept/Oct would be good . Others voted for it so there must be some who have it.

Sounds good. It is also on Audible, in the UK at least. Buddy Reads so far:

June/July: The Smiler With the Knife by Nicholas Blake.

July/August: Police at the Funeral by Margery Allingham

July/August: The Mystery at Underwood House by Clara Benson

August/Sept: Lament for a Maker by Michael Innes.

Sept/October: Mr Bowling Buys a Newspaper by Donald Henderson.

Interestingly, there is a new pre-order for Donald Henderson, so more books by him being re-released.
a voice like velvet

A sensational wartime crime novel about a BBC announcer who abuses his position to commit crimes against the rich and famous…

By day Ernest Bisham is a velvet-voiced announcer for the BBC; the whole country recognises the sound of his meticulous pronouncements. By night, however, Mr Bisham is a cat-burglar, careless about his loot, but revelling in the danger and excitement of his running contest with Scotland Yard. But as he gets away with more and more daring escapades, there will come a time when he goes too far . . .

When Donald Henderson’s Mr Bowling Buys a Newspaper caused something of a sensation, his publishers were keen to capitalise on their author’s popularity, quickly reissuing The Announcer (originally published under his pen-name ‘D. H. Landels’) with the more alluring title A Voice Like Velvet. Despite a small edition of just 3,000 copies, it was his best reviewed work, as suspenseful and offbeat as his earlier success.

This Detective Club classic includes an introduction by The Golden Age of Murder’s Martin Edwards, who explores Henderson’s own BBC career and the long established tradition of books about gentlemen crooks. The book also includes a rare Henderson short story, the chilling ‘The Alarm Bell’.

Looks good too - out September.

I have opened our June/July Buddy Read Threads:

June/July: The Smiler With the Knife by Nicholas Blake

June/July: Information Received by E.R. Punshon

Coming up in later months:

July/August: Police at the Funeral by Margery Allingham

July/August: The Mystery at Underwood House by Clara Benson

August/Sept: Lament for a Maker by Michael Innes.

Sept/October: Mr Bowling Buys a Newspaper by Donald Henderson.

We still have blanks for Oct/Nov and Nov/Dec. Happy to have any suggestions for the final two slots. Is anyone keen to continue the series we have been following - Margery Allingham, Michael Innes, Nicholas Blake, etc.? I will say that the next Nicholas Blake, Murder with Malice is one of my personal faves.

Yes Sandy. I am going to continue Margery Allingham. I was wondering if we were going to do it as buddy reads

message 295: by Susan (new)

Susan | 13274 comments Mod
We can. I will try the next one - I am finding them a little hard going, but, even if I drop out, you can still continue.

Any takers for continuing Nicholas Blake? Actually, the next two are Malice in Wonderland and The Case of the Abominable Snowman, which could be a good, December, buddy read?

message 296: by Pamela (new)

Pamela (bibliohound) | 495 comments I'm enjoying both Allingham and Blake, so would be happy to carry on with either/both.

message 297: by Susan (new)

Susan | 13274 comments Mod
Great, Pamela. Shall I add the next two for Nov/Dec? If we want to add another book, such as Allingham, then we can have 2 in a month anyway. Unless they are Michael Innes, which tend to be fairly long/complicated?

That would make the list for this year:

July/August: Police at the Funeral by Margery Allingham

July/August: The Mystery at Underwood House by Clara Benson

August/Sept: Lament for a Maker by Michael Innes.

Sept/October: Mr Bowling Buys a Newspaper by Donald Henderson.

October/November: Malice in Wonderland by Nicholas Blake

November/December: The Case of the Abominable Snowman by Nicholas Blake

Reading goodies ahead! I am sincerely hoping I enjoy the next Allingham...

message 298: by Jill (new)

Jill (dogbotsmum) | 2687 comments Maybe we could slip the next Allingham into one of those.

Of course we can. Let's read Police at the Funeral and then decide. :)
