J PIs- Tina has had to drop out due to too much on her plate. Do we still want to read and discuss? If so, does anyone want to host? I returned my copy to the library some time ago so I'm not a good candidate. If we want, we could just do a general book discussion rather than chapter by chapter as we usually do. Or we can shelve for a later date.
Thoughts?

Thanks, J. Sorry to be a Pooper PI; am planning on Nov. Have a good one. ;-)

Jill Tool | 992 comments I'm next in line at my library for it. Could we wait and start it maybe next week?

I think a general discussion would work. I have a hard time remembering what happened in each chapter anyway.
I'll volunteer to host since I think everyone else has had a turn recently. I have yet to start reading it but I will this weekend.

J Ok Allison ball is in your court. Post away whenever you are ready.

Allison | 905 comments Ok, then. I will post a thread and people can jump in when they like. Or, LOL, we can just stay here. It's titled and ready to go.

So to get us started a brief synopsis: (didn't we just talk about those?).

London, England 1887 - Orphan Veronica Speedwell resumes her world travels for scientific purposes while fending off suitors. A German Baron knows details of Veronica's past but before he can divulge any he is murdered. Veronica is forced to go on the run with her newly found cohort Bram.

:-( This one sounds real good but I've got two waiting and other stuff to do. Just got done designing Christmas card for my SIL's show cat and his brother lol...hence her gifting me with her old ipad. Learning my way round it is at bottom of list. Lists. lol Anyway, enjoy CB as I know you will! :-)

Allison | 905 comments I'm such a dork. I just spent an hour looking through my Kindle for this book and then realized I hadn't bought it yet. LMAO! Old age strikes again!

Tina we will miss your comments & companionship on this one but I understand a full schedule.

Like a Halloween ghost, Allison, I shall be lurking. Wooooo!

Okay, that was lame but you get the idea. ;-)

J Veronica was certainly ahead of her time in terms of how she lived her life!
More like a woman of the 21st century than the 19th.

Allison | 905 comments I LOVE Veronica! What a fun read this is. The discussions between her and Stoker just kill me. It reads so fast too, seems like I just pick it up and then I'm 30 pages ahead.

How is everyone else liking it? Any ideas on the direction the story is taking? I'm past the murder and working on solving...

Jill Tool | 992 comments I BOUGHT my copy last night and I'm finishing up the book I'm reading now and I should be able to start it tomorrow or sunday. Hopefully I'll be able to start discussion Monday

Wonderful, Jill. I really think you will like this one. Can't wait for your input. I'm hoping there's more than 1 in this series. I shall go forth and look!

message 15: by J (new)

J It is definitely the first in a series. These two have a world of adventures awaiting them!

Oh yes, I am sure this will be a continuing series, although I have not finished it yet so might be wrong. I looked and this is apparently the only 1 featuring Veronica Speedwell.
How are you liking it J?

message 17: by J (new)

J I read it a few weeks ago and enjoyed it. All the reviews refer to it as a new series so you don't have to finish it to know that.

message 18: by J (new)

J Does this display look different to anyone or is it only me?

I went to the Authors page here and there are 2 spots for as yet untitled books in this series so there's that.

I finished it this morning. Loved it! Was completely surprised by Veronica's history. Did not see that coming. Guessed who's pulling the strings in the background though.

I figure there will be more delving into Stokers background in another book, there's surely a story or two there.

Jill Tool | 992 comments I started the book, I'm on like chapter five, and so far I love this li'l girl!!!!!!!!! I love how she speaks her mind, my kind of gal. Vicar's wife or not, I wanted to slap that women into the next century! Who does she think she is spreading rumors, deciding what is best for Ms. Speedwell anyways?! Nosy old hag!

WOW! I didn't sound bitter there did I

Yes I didn't like the Vicar's wife at all either. Talk about a "Sister Bertha Better than You" wow.

message 22: by J (new)

J I guess she felt it was both her right and duty to butt into people's lives. In those days, a woman was supposed to marry else she was dependent on the charity of her male relatives. For the most part they did not make their own way in the world so kudos to Veronica on that score. She handled Mrs. Vicar a lot more politely than I would have, especially knowing I was leaving town.

Ah. Good point about marriage. I had forgotten that was how it was. I am truly thrilled I did not have to deal with any of those kind of rules when I was thinking about getting married.

I did like some of the information about butterflies. I thought it was great she was able to be self-sufficient as well.

Wondering if there is a chance of a romance between her and Stoker. Ok, maybe I'm just wishing.

message 26: by Jill (new)

Jill Tool | 992 comments naw you haven't...lol...I was wondering that also or if he is going to be a character that will become a friend and bounce in and out of the series.

message 27: by Jill (new)

Jill Tool | 992 comments I really like Veronica, she is my kind of gal! She's got spunk, she's got fire, she's got a mind of her own, she has attitude, she's got it all! I like that she is a strong character and she can stand on her own two feet. This was a nice change of pace for a character in a book. I did find my self laughing at her. One of my favorite parts was early in the book when she cut off a patients toe. OMG! I laughed so hard, it wasn't that she cut it, it's the way she told it as though she telling someone about her day, nothing more, nothing less. Mr. Stroker, was a perfect match to go up against her strong character. I liked him and his didn't think that far ahead attitude. I was very pleased with this first book in the series. At least they didn't spend 3/4 of the way to describe everything and give back story. They started off right away with Veronica's life in danger, and then shortly after that the murder of the Baron. Oh, and I loved the fact they ran away and joined the circus (I know it was called a Curious show, but it was still the circus)...lol....never saw that one coming and it was much better than them hiding out in another town, and keeping to themselves so that the townsfolk wouldn't ask to many question. I thought it was a very well thought out plot and well written. It didn't move at a fast pace, but the pace was a nice, medium read so that you could enjoy the story and not get lost or forget something.

I didn't even make the connection of them "running away to join the circus" but that's exactly what they did. I really liked this one too Jill.
