April Wilson (aprilwilson) I just noticed that I had a sale today on Amazon.com that was paid at the 35% royalty rate, when I am signed up for the KDPS 70% royalty rate. Why would the royalty rate drop to 35% for a particular sale? Does anyone know what condition would trigger that? I've seen it happen a couple of times before, and I figure there's some obscure reason why that happened. Does anyone know?

Thanks!

Nicole (nicoleminsk) | 11 comments Did it happen in a different country? Your rate is dependant on the country and even if you are at the 70% rate in the US, there are some countries that don't qualify for that rate. However, if it's not a different country, I have no idea.

Christina McMullen (cmcmullen) From the KDP FAQ:

1-2. Why are royalties displayed at a 35% rate in the sales report, when I had selected 70% royalty option for my book?
The 70% royalty option is only applicable for books sold to customers in certain countries. For sales to customers outside of the 70% territories, royalties are calculated at 35%, and these transactions appear at a 35% rate in the sales report. For sales to customers in Brazil, Japan, Mexico, and India, the 70% royalty option is only available for titles enrolled in KDP Select. For full details, see the Pricing Page and Terms and Conditions.

April Wilson (aprilwilson) Oh. I thought if the sale was to Amazon.COM, then it was a US sale. Is that not the case?

Other countries have their own Amazon sites (Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.ca, Amazon.au, etc...). Can people from other countries buy from Amazon.COM, too?

Yes, if there is no Amazon store in their own country, they can purchase from the .com store.

April Wilson (aprilwilson) Great, then I had a sale outside the US (from some unknown country). I wish I could see which country it was. Nevertheless, this is good.

Christina McMullen (cmcmullen) If you click on the link provided, it will let you know which countries have a 70% royalty option. Anything else (excluding places that are barred from accessing Amazon by trade restrictions) will be at the 35% rate.

I understand the excitement. I am from Scotland, and I recall the thrill of my first US,Aussie and Canadian sales.

Enjoy.

P.D. Workman (pdworkman) Even if your country has a store, you can still buy from .com. I am in Canada, but my Kindle account is through .com. There are certain benefits for me to buy from .com instead of .ca.

Oh, I didn't know you could do that. Thanks.
