CFDeeDee How to count the grid points ?

Tasha Janice wrote: "Tasha wrote: "Kahl Drago...he is much better looking IRL. ;) .."

Are you telling us that you've seen him IRL?? Envious!"

NO! Although it would be nice. ;)

I just meant that he looks better out of character. haha!

message 206: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I just finished my 1st book. Off to report. I literally had 3 minutes (according to my kindle) to finish last night but kept falling asleep...3 min! I couldn't do it. haha

Off to report and figure out what book to read next.

message 207: by Berit☀️✨ (new)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) We are all doing fabulous!!! I will start my next book later today :-)

message 208: by Marie Claude (new)

Marie Claude (mariecg2001) | 1030 comments Finished and reported A Wrinkle in Time. A little too christian, not enough sci-fi for me :(

I won't get to read much today since it's election day in Canada and I will be working all day at the local office of a party (not telling which LOL). Will be back online tomorrow morning...

message 209: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Off to work. Back to reading tonight. Have a good day/night everyone!

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments CFDeeDee wrote: "How to count the grid points ?"

Just add up the value of the letters in the first word of the title.

When you read the book, your score is the value of the first letter of the first word in the title. But when it's put on the grid, it's the value of all the letters of the first word.

message 211: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments Goodness! Thank you j'mom. What a lovely gallery of hunky men to look at first thing in the morning. I wish I'd seen them last night. I had nightmares all night. First I dreamt of fighting with my ex, and then I was being chased by a bunch of lunatics wielding hatchets. No wonder I feel tired this morning.

And yes - Stargate Atlantis. I loved that show because of him.

message 212: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I asked over in the toppler thread but haven't heard anything yet so I'm asking in here what you guys think. My next audio can be Where'd You Go, Bernadette and I'm wondering if it's ok to have a word with an apostrophe. I'm assuming so but don't know if there was any discussion about this.

I'm on my second book and almost finished my first audio book.

message 213: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments There was a question about a hyphen the other day and J-mom said it was okay to count it as one word. So maybe that will work for you as well?

message 214: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments I've finished my first two books, The Gods of Mars & The Heart Goes Last (seems a bit weird putting them in the same sentence).

I've moved on to my next two, Artists in Crime on audio and Remembered Death in paper.

message 215: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Dawn wrote: "There was a question about a hyphen the other day and J-mom said it was okay to count it as one word. So maybe that will work for you as well?"

I was thinking that and it's really just an added letter. We'll see I guess. I won't start it until I hear from her but if it's much longer I may just go with another audio book. No problem.

message 216: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee Thanks for explaining Janice
Still on my first book :'( I can't believe how slow I am !

message 217: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments Don't you worry, every team will have the dozen books in a week readers and the one book in a week readers, there is no pressure to be speedy.
Read what you can, every little bit helps.

message 218: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments I'm still in my first book, CFDeeDee, don't worry. This team is doing great.

message 219: by Tasha (new)

Tasha yes, CFDeeDee, don't worry at all. It's all about reading together for fun and some will be faster than others but it should be fun. If you are stressing it won't be as fun for you. It's also a great way to get to know people better so just relax, read and enjoy. :D

message 220: by CFDeeDee (new)

Kerri Jaxnsmom, I can't help thinking you might be trying to distract us! Though what a lovely way to be distracted.
Just finished Beautiful Ruins on to The Gunslinger if I can find where I put the audio for it.

I'll be dreaming of Ronan Dex and Holy Moses Jamie, I'm sure.

message 224: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments I hope everyone is remembering to report your reads in the reporting thread.

CFDeeDee - there is never any pressure. This is just a fun activity. It gives us a chance to read some great books, get to know our team members better, and hopefully whoop some other teams' derrieres. This little guy can be our mascot and show us how it's done.

message 225: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Love the mascot!

I'm about 36% into DRACULA. What a great book! I'll probably finish it tomorrow.

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments Janice wrote: "I hope everyone is remembering to report your reads in the reporting thread...."

As far as I can tell, everything that's been mentioned here has been reported.

We are at a total of 84 points right now. I have everything on the grid at the moment as well which gives us another 213 points for that part.

message 227: by Berit☀️✨ (new)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) I should be finishing another book real quick, definitely tonight :-)

message 228: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Thanks for all your work, dawn!

message 232: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments I suppose now it's gonna be harder to make the new words fit the grid, but so far it looks great.
Thank you for your work, Dawn!

Super job, Dawn!

I'm curious. I noticed, you were using a regular Scrabble board. Were you counting triple/double points? I don't think j'mom has assigned those spaces yet.

message 234: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments I didn't get much reading done last night. I was exhausted and kept dozing off and dropping the book so I finally caved in and went to sleep. Thanks to j'mom's pictures and suggestions, I had very happy dreams indeed. Included were hunky men, Elizabeth Taylor, a beach, a vacation condo with a dishwasher that also was a garberator. I didn't want to wake up this morning.

message 235: by Berit☀️✨ (new)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) LOL!

message 236: by Berit☀️✨ (new)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) From how I understand it we use the original Scrabble board, then if we need another board she will change it up using the fruit machine, but I can be completely misunderstanding this :-)

message 237: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments lol, Janice!

I don't know how the doubles/triples work. I think they weren't assigned yet.

message 238: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments I think we were to use the size of the original Scrabble board (15x15), but wasn't sure what was happening with the double/triples.

message 239: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments I made one with the squares coloured but you are correct, J-mom is going to fruit machine some random ones later. We're not using the ones from the actual board. But it looks pretty. :)

message 240: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments It looks pretty indeed. :)

message 241: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Great job everyone. I have about 15 more pages of A Quiet Belief in Angels to finish. Doesn't look like "Quiet" will fit in on the board, tho. But that's ok.

message 242: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee I don't think I'll have Internet connection starting Thursday till Monday!
Shall I report the books I'm gonna read before reading them? Just in case I mean !! And I'm make sure I finish them !

message 243: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments I'm going to reread Bird Box. There is a place in the grid where "bird" will fit. It's a fast read, plus it's one of the group reads.

message 244: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Sounds like a plan, Debra.

message 245: by Kerri (new)

Kerri Thanks Dawn for all your work. I was wondering whether I should start reading books with shorter words as soon it may be difficult to fit the longer ones in. I'd originally chosen ones with longer words going for maximum points. I've almost finished listening to The Waiting Room and at this rate may be able to read at least 2 maybe 3 more.

message 246: by Berit☀️✨ (new)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) Are we going to have a second board? Or do we have to fit everything onto this board?

There will be a few days before final totaling of points, so you can report on Monday. But reading cut-off is still noon EDT Sunday. There are always some people who can't report immediately.

message 248: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments Berit wrote: "Are we going to have a second board? Or do we have to fit everything onto this board?"

Only one board.

message 249: by jaxnsmom (new)

I thought I'd be fair. The squares will be random so the extra points will be a welcome surprise. I have to wait til after so I can't be tempted to make sure my team has an advantage :) It will really be funny if no team has a letter on any of the squares!

message 250: by Vicki (new)

Vicki | 1538 comments I didn't like the narration in We Need New Names unfortunately so I quickly switched to Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity which was really good. Listening to The Zahir now and liking it.

I don't think we need to be too concerned about the grid yet. We should probably list our titles by point value and prioritize.
