RobinMichelle, I've moved your request down to Unsolved so that you will get more people looking at it.
No idea what your book is, but it does sound interesting.

Was this a Mercy Thompson book by Patricia Briggs? The first one is titled Moon Called. Here's a link to the series wiki:https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercy...
This is three related series by Sheri S.Tepper.The woman whose name begins with M is Mavin-she is a shapeshifter.(Chronicles of Mavin Manyshaped series) Her son, Peter (Land Of The True Game series) is the shifter male you mentioned, and he falls in love with Jinian (Jinian Footseer series) and it's at the end of her third book that powers are lost.
I'm pretty sure it's the Mavin Manyshaped books. If I could find them somewhere where they don't cost an arm & a leg I could find out for sure.Thank you everyone for your help.
Wow. I actually bought those books a few years ago and am surprised that it's so ridiculously expensive on Amazon.com. There are ebooks available though. Also, both Amazon.co.uk and ebay.co.uk have copies of the Chronicles of Mavin Manyshaped available though which will ship to the US. Ebay's also got a slightly cheaper version of all three books together. Or had when I checked.
Actually, if you wanted confirmation you could try just check the ebook versions on Amazon and reading the sample chapters, see if they ring a bell?

There was a world threatening conflict and winning meant losing powers.
It was more for adult than YA as there were obvious references to sex (I can't remember how explicit; recall that mainly after the loss of their powers the husband worried that because he or she couldn't shift anymore that the second wasn't as good - she lied and said it was).
