Michelle (michelletheresa) | 228 comments Hi Everyone!! Who's ready for this months challenge?? (I really can't believe it's October already, where the heck did the year go?)
To me, October brings thoughts of Halloween. Jack-o'-lanterns, skeletons, witches and all things spooky! I also love to be scared, there's something about the adrenaline rush you get by going through a haunted house, never knowing if something will pop out at you and make you scream.

Your challenge for this month, if you choose to accept it, is to read something that scares you. The topic will be up to you to decide. For me it's aliens and ghosts that freak me out the most.

Here are a bunch of lists to help you out.
https://www.goodreads.com/list/tag/scary

You can also ask your local librarian or bookstore help recommending a book!

As always here are the rules:

Rules are:
-It has to be a new book for you, one you haven't read before
-It must be different than our other book picks, so it can't be the same main, comic book, manga or series we are reading that month
-You have to read it within that month to get the achievement.
-Check in with us once you've read your book, you can do that here, on twitter, the IGGPPC forums or our new Instagram page, I love seeing covers so take a picture and share with us!

Don't forget to message me once you've completed this challenge for the achievement code

If you are looking for more scary books, there is an All Hallow's Read swap going on over in the forums! Sign ups are open until Oct 10th! http://geekgirlpenpals.com/forums/top...

Happy Reading!!

Tracey (arcanegumption) | 134 comments oh goodness, this one is hard for me. I can't decide what to read for this category for the PopSugar Challenge either.

message 5: by Myrthe (new)

Myrthe (myrtheasdf) Can I read the second one in a series? I have read Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, and now I am planning to read Hollow City. And yes - the first book freaked me out, but in a good way!

Michelle (michelletheresa) | 228 comments Tracey and Desiree have you read Bird Box? I read it last year and enjoyed it. Might go with the fear sounds outside.

Yup! That works as long as you haven't read it yet!

message 8: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberinoface) I'm probably going to read something off my thriller shelf. Books don't really "scare" me so I'm hoping something on it will spook me. I was thinking of reading Charming or Bird Box since they are on my October reading list

message 9: by Marie (new)

Marie | 38 comments Im choosing to read "The World's Most Haunted Places." im terrified of ghosts

message 10: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (persephone17) I'm going to read Carrie. I watched the movie, and while it didn't scare me, it really freaked me out!

message 11: by Regan (new)

Regan (mollytornado) | 36 comments Stories revolving around haunted houses can spook me, so I'm going to read Hell House by Richard Matheson. I might also read The Cipher by Kathe Koja as a bonus novel for the month. The story sounds like something that could creep me out, depending on how it is executed.

message 12: by Billie (new)

Billie (crystalemi) | 2 comments Definitely joining in! I'm so glad it's October, so people don't think I'm crazy when I start talking about horror stories *0*

Does anyone know any good spooky story about cemeteries? I'm really scared by the dead waking up but not in the "zombie" kind of scary (zombie books are all about getting infected) just dead people waking up.

Zombie books are okay too as long as the clue of the book is not about spreading the "disease".

Otherwise I'm reading a vampires-through-the-world anthology.

message 13: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer This one is going to be tough. I read a lot of horror stories and I don't find them scary, and I want something genuinely scary for this.

I think the last book I read that I thought was scary was 'In the Tall Grass' by Joe Hill and Stephen King. It's about a couple who wandering into grass and can't get out or find each other.

The Long Walk by Richard Bachman terrified me when I was younger.

I'd love to find a book equivalent of the film It Follows. The idea of someone/something always following me is really scary. You don't know who or what it is ...

I looked Bird Box up and it piqued my interest. It's on order from the library, we'll see if it comes in time. Thanks Michelle!!

Kendall • thegeekyyogi (thegeekyyogi) | 74 comments I've decided on reading Bellman & Black. Ghosts have always freaked me out and since this is a ghost story I've been avoiding reading it, even though it sounds super interesting. I'll just curl up with my blanket and hope I don't become too terrified.

message 16: by Clémence (new)

Clémence | 117 comments I have a terrible fear of heights and I'm reading Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mount Everest Disaster, does that count ? :p
Just kidding, I'll try to find an horror book for the challenge.

No joke, I think that totally counts.

message 18: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Same here. It definitely counts!

Clémence | 117 comments Cool ! :D Thanks girls !

Kendall • thegeekyyogi (thegeekyyogi) | 74 comments I finished reading Bellman & Black a few days ago and find my self extremely disappointed. While the book clearly says ghost story on the cover, and it is described as such, I'm not sure it really qualifies for that category. While the man is certainly haunted, by his own choices, and death tends to linger around in the back ground, that's about the extent of its ghostliness. Furthermore, you don't really get to know any of the characters on any layer, there's not much depth to any of them. I think I may have enjoyed it a little more if it had actually been the ghost story it claim to be, but even so, it's not likely that I'll be recommending this book to anyone in the near future.

Books don't tend to scare me, but I picked up The Prestige because the film is amazing, and the book ending is a lot creepier than in the film.

message 22: by Maria (new)

Maria | 25 comments I read my first ever Stephen King for this, Pet Sematary by Stephen King . I thought I was doing OK until right at the end, eep!

message 23: by Marie (new)

Marie | 38 comments I finished " the World's Most Haunted Places. " it wasn't as scary as I had hoped. it didn't go into enough detail about the hauntings. Instead, it was more about the places themselves

message 24: by Myrthe (new)

Myrthe (myrtheasdf) I finished Hollow City, and it wasn't scary at all. It's a shame, because I think the first book in the series was way better!

message 25: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer I read Summer of Night by Dan Simmons for this one.

It wasn't outright scary, but I'm a tough nut to crack when it comes to horror but I was definitely on the edge of my seat, with a knotted stomach a few times, having to read a bit more to make sure all was okay.

People have compared it to King's IT, as it's a story of a group of kids in 1960 in rural America. They've just finished school for the summer and are looking forward to fun and adventures. But, something bad is lurking.

I adore Dan Simmons books, he's seriously one of my favourite authors and I recommend everyone having a try at one of his books.

message 26: by Regan (new)

Regan (mollytornado) | 36 comments I finished Hell House by Richard Matheson last night. I wouldn't say that it's a great book when it comes to the story, it's you're fairly standard horror/haunted house fare, but it still creeped me out. To be honest, I'm glad I have now finished reading it, since I have had troubles sleeping at night because of it.
