Jackie B. - Death by Tsundoku (reiwing2040) | 1343 comments I finally got to my first book in this challenge! Holes was a fantastic novel. I definitely like the novel better-- but I think the film adaption was fairly true to the story. It's one of the closest book/film adaptions I've seen.

(And Sigourney Weaver is a PERFECT Warden.)

Lulu (robotwitch) | 281 comments Updated message #20 - 3/10 now.

I have a question about my third book though - I'm including Bird Box, the rights to which have been bought by Universal, and is being made into a film. Does it still count? Or should I only count those that have set dates and such? Fair enough if so :)

Amy (Other Amy) | 629 comments Hmm, I guess I am doing this after all, as I've already got five that count. I'll go for seven as I'm not too sure how many more I'll get.

message 112: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen Denly (kathleendenly) | 7 comments I am still waiting for Pride and Prejudice and Zombies to come in at my library. The local copy apparently went missing so it's coming from farther away. :(

message 118: by Megan (new)

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Just finished my 2nd book - Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead. I watched the movie first before reading the book. The movie was rather sophomoric, so I had better hopes for the book. Hopes did not pan out. I actually thought the movie did a better job explaining the facets of the author's world. About 3/4 of the way through the book, I just wanted it to be done to move on to something else. Not my favorite and I don't think I will continue with the series. 2.5 stars

2/5

message 119: by Megan (new)

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Just finished my third book - The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins. While I was not wild about any of the characters in the book, I could not stop listening. This one did keep me guessing until about 3/4 in, so I appreciated the author's ability for that. I also liked the imagery and the different tones of the characters. Definitely worth reading! 4 stars

3/5

message 120: by Megan (new)

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Just finished my fourth book - The Scorch Trials by James Dashner. This is a typical middle book in a sequence - leaves you more confused and wanting an ending then ever before. I did not appreciate some of the character development in this one. Definitely finishing the trilogy but it's not my favorite. 3.5 stars

4/5

message 124: by Megan (new)

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Just finished my 5th selection - Kitchens of the Great Midwest by J. Ryan Stradel. Overall, I enjoyed this book! I loved the descriptions of the food and the impact it had on the characters' lives. That being said, my main two criticisms were first that the book was disjointed and second the main character became two dimensional. First, each chapter is told from a different character's perspective and they intersect with the main character. But it takes a bit to fit everyone together. Second, I enjoyed the complexity of the main character as she grew older, but at some point, the author presented her as a saintly character with no flaws who was completely perfect. While she was presented this way through other characters, it was a disservice to this interesting person. Definitely worth reading! 4.5 stars

5/5 - Challenge completed!

Fab film although not completely faithful to the book. Always interesting when things are not depicted how you'd imagined them from reading the book - the wall wasn't as high or big as the one I'd pictured in my mind whilst reading the book. Loved Robert de Niro in this.
Halfway through my final book for this challenge: Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mount Everest Disaster

message 127: by Megan (new)

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Just completed another book - All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven. This book left me crying, thinking, and with a serious book hangover. The author was able to break down and describe bipolar disorder and show how that affects not only the person with the mental illness but those around them. Don't miss the author's note, as she explains her reason for writing the book. Definitely worth reading! 5 stars

Carolina | 6 comments Hi! I've just joined the group and Blagica suggested this challenge on the topic "Introduce yourself", because there I mentioned I love reading books that are made into movies or tv series.
I'm in for three books - as it's quite late I'd like to just finish reading the ones I've been already reading this month! Does it count? :)
1. Mildred Pierce
2. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
3. The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest

message 141: by Sam F (new)

Sam F | 1355 comments I haven’t watched any of these movies yet, but now I have a list for watching during the holiday break. Looking forward to it! I'll see if I can read 3 more for a total of 10 before the end of December:

1. The Dovekeepers
2. The Rosie Project – movie in development – loved the book, so I can’t wait to see the movie.
3. Treasure Island – there are a few versions have been made – will decide which one to watch during the holiday break.
4. A Christmas Carol – haven’t seen this movie since I was a kid and don’t remember it. I’m looking forward to sharing this one with my daughter.
5. The Martian
6. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl
7. Olive Kitteridge

message 144: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen Denly (kathleendenly) | 7 comments Okay, so I have been struggling to read "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" for weeks now. Not that it's a bad book. It's just that my primary opportunity to read is just before bed and I know better than to read about zombies just before bed. So I'm still only a couple chapters in. :(

However, in the meantime I have positively plowed through "The 5th Wave" and am deep into "The Infinite Wave" on Audible. You would think these books would also give me nightmares, but nope. Go figure. :) Absolutely loving these books.

Unfortunately I broke down and watched the "Paper Towns" movie before getting to the book and now I don't want to read the book, so I need to find something else to read.

1.2 complete out of 4 isn't great with 15ish days to go. :( I'm thinking I over estimated how much I could get read in this category in addition to the other books I'm reading.

message 145: by Megan BG (new)

Megan BG (meganbgreads) | 1562 comments 3. A Tale of Two Cities

I've completed my challenge - 3/3, it was great fun!

Good luck everyone & Happy New Year! :)

1st October - 31st Dec 2015:

3/3

1. Lorna Doone - R. D. Blackmore
2. Sense & Sensibility - Jane Austen
3. Dracula - Bram Stoker

message 148: by Eggp (new)

Eggp | 487 comments Goal: 9/9

Finished all nine books, but only seven of the movies.

Dracula by Bram Stoker Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger The Man Who Fell to Earth by Walter Tevis Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad A Single Man by Christopher Isherwood Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck 1984 by George Orwell No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy

message 149: by Jackie B. - (new)

Jackie B. - Death by Tsundoku (reiwing2040) | 1343 comments Cutting it close to the wire! I just finished the last of my three challenge books: Challenge complete!

Holes by Louis Sachar Completed 10/24/15
Lone Wolf and Cub, Omnibus Volume 1 by Kazuo Koike Completed 11/6/15
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button by F. Scott Fitzgerald Completed 12/25/15

I enjoyed the book better in all cases. However, the film the Lone Wolf and Cub graphic novels is based off of is a strange hybrid of different segments of the manga coming together in a way I didn't expect. That said, Shogun Assassin was my favorite of the film adaptions. I think that's because I wasn't trying to recreate good literature-- it did it's own thing. :)

message 150: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen Denly (kathleendenly) | 7 comments Finishing this challenge just isn't going to happen. :( I vastly underestimated the time suck of the holiday season. Not nearly as much reading time as I get during the rest of the year. :( Oh well. It was fun to try. I wouldn't have the read The 5th Wave otherwise, and I really enjoyed it, so still worth the try. :) Happy New Year to everyone!
