NO SPOILERS

Are you planning to read The Colour of Magic? What do you think from the beginning?

Just started this last night. I've highlighted a few quotes already - we'll have to start a quote thread, I think! Charming, anyway, and I don't think it'll take me long to get through it.

Jordan | 3 comments I can't see the link to the reddit discussion. What would it be?

Jordan, it's r/DiscworldReadThrough the threads are different, I'm pinning the later section discussions as we progress on Reddit.

Brett | 4 comments I originally found myself unimpressed with Pratchett's writing style, his tendency to jump around, and the quaint, satirical style humour. I've had the book for 48 hours and I'm already halfway through. I think I must retract my initial impression and say that while it's not what I'm used to, I think I'm rather fond of it.

Kaitlyn I think I read once that Pratchett created Discworld because he wanted to make a place with its own laws of physics and such. I find it very entertaining, but I also catch myself obsessively trying to understand how it would work. (Does the disc itself spin? But if the sun spins around it, does that mean it looks like it's going in circles all day?) Sometimes I have to remind myself that it's satire.

Side note for new readers: Read the footnotes. They're jokes or explanations. I had been used to footnotes just indicating sources in nonfiction and might have overlooked them if my friend hadn't said something.

Sorry, that was my mistake. There is a link in the 'Prologue + "Colour of Magic"' thread for that Reddit thread, however, but this first impressions only exists on Goodreads for now.

Yes, footnotes are becoming a regularity in the books I've been reading lately (Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, anyone?).

I've added a thread for it now... not much discussion in there yet though, do feel free to kick it off!

Gemma | 4 comments Currently struggling a bit with the style; im finding it hard to keep up with whats going on and all the weird names and terms. Will persevere though!

I cheat, not just in Discworld, but any book where I can't pronounce either a place or person name... as an example, so you remember that Icelandic volcano? Eyjafjallajökull? Yeah, I still pronounce it eye-a-falla-joke-ul. I know it's wrong, but it means I can skip it when I read it and not stall, because I find if I try to pronounce it properly, it breaks the narrative of whatever I'm reading and I lose interest pretty quickly. In The Colour of Magic there's a Dr Rjinswand - I wasn't sure on that one and went with ru-and the first time I've read it, and kept it ever since. don't let the names trip you up. some of them are puns, but I'm ok with missing one or two puns to keep the narrative flowing. hope that this helps!

Christina Pilkington | 9 comments I finished this one a few weeks ago. My copy of Light Fantastic finally came in though OverDrive, so I'm excited to start on book #2 soon!
