Honestly, the real question from this story is NOT "Why did Maureen not turn out like all the rest of them?" But rather, "Why did they all not turn out like Maureen?"
I think it had much to do with the other three were closer in age and had each other and Maureen, being more alone, was not really part of the family as she spent so much time with the families of her friends.
Can you imagine having a child that age and not insisting that she be home at night?? That alone would have to do something to you mentally--just the idea that they did not care that you were not there.

1. Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury
2. This book fits the task #2 as the author is male and is new to me.
3. The lyrical prose slowed my reading a lot. I liked the themes of ageing, acceptance of us as we are now, etc.
I enjoyed the book and its a 4 star for me.

I think what you said about loving his books and being crushed when he died is sufficient. That's a personal reaction and explains why you picked up the book.

Ah, that's too bad. Maybe next month will work better for you.
I read The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith, finishing this book just in the nick of time!
I had task number 5 and decided to read this particular book as it is set in London, UK and the author is also from the UK, (just like me!). Mystery/crime thriller books also appeal to me and this is a firm favorite, with a 4.5 stars rating.

Thanks, Janice.

My task was task 1. Read a book with the author or a character with with my Christian or surname. In this book is a character called Cassandra Travers. My name is Cassandra.
What thought of the book. I didn't really like it. I couldn't get into the story and I found it a bit boring.

2. I had task #3. I love the blue colors, and the cover looks like a painting. The fabric is so detailed.
3. I really liked this book, which is by one of my favorite authors. The storyline was a bit predictable, but I still found it interesting and well written. Ultimately, I gave it four stars.

I had task 1 and read Don't Breathe a Word. One of the main characters was named Sam.
I have to say this book was perfect for the Halloween season - though I didn't know it would be so appropriate. I hadn't read the back cover and had no idea what it would be about. Just that the character was named Sam. It truly is the creepiest fairy story I have ever read. Lots of twists and turns giving it a 'who dunnit' feel, but ever so creepy.
I enjoyed listening to the audiobook version as the voices used emphasized the eeriness of the story. A great October read!

2. I had task #2 to do, to read a book by a male writer in which I never read any of his book, Ransom Riggs
3. The book is about a young man who goes through a lot with his life. And how his life would change in less than 4 weeks. I liked most of the characters, the events were going smooth and nice, liked the idea of the book, but there was something missing in it ! In some parts I felt like I'm reading Harry Potter !
First time I saw the book I thought it was a strange one,the cover and the pictures included were - How to say this! - unusual.
I was expecting to have my breath taking, to capture my heart by the end of the book, but that didn't happen.
It wasn't a bad read at all, but it's not one of my fav for sure!
I think I could live without reading the second one. However, I won't mind bying it if I found it around!

It's been a while since I read this one and I have probably forgotten a lot of details but I remember enjoying the reading experience all the way through.

What this book says about me, is that I'm (GASP) a fan of romance novels. I always enjoy a good love story whether its cheesy or steamy or just a good old fashion romance and this one was a combination of all 3. It was a good read and I enjoyed not only the main characters' love story but also some of the secondary characters' love stories. I also enjoyed the touch of mysticism with the magic veil and can't wait to see how the rest of the series goes.

I'm currently reading the last book in the series. I think the best part of the books are the pictures.

Good point
I had not thought about how no curfew could feel like no concern to a teenager. I wonder if the children of the Bloomsbury group felt neglected?

Cherie, look what was recently published!

Actually, the 2nd book is a cliff hanger and the 3rd book starts off exactly where it left off. I won't tell you whether or not the 3rd book is a happy ever after or not. :)

Not to burst the bubble, but the 2nd one does not have a "happily ever after" ending at all and what a cliff hanger!

Thank you for that! ;0)

@Cherie hmmmm in that case perhaps I should get myself a copy and see how things would end up!

Yes, there are three books in the series. The third, Library of Souls was released a couple of months ago.

CFDeeDee. The third book was just released last month, I think. I am #60 on the hold list from my library. Doesn't look like I will kill this series until next year unless I buy it. I don't want to though, because I got the other two from the library.

Perhaps I'll keep it waiting till the book fair which would be in March.

I read A Guide to the Birds of East Africa. For Task... ummm... 2. It's a male author I haven't read before.
I liked this book. It was fun and cute. A bit misogynistic but in the way 70 year old men are. Meaning well to open the door, even though you got to the door first and now there is a weird shuffle to get through it.
Definitely liked it and would recommend it. Did I love it? No. But that's okay. Was still enjoyable.

On the other hand, I did walk into a spider web on my front porch one evening this month, after I arrived home from work. I had seen it, with the huge spider in it, on my way out that morning. It was strung out across the front part of the porch. I do not like to destroy the webs unless I have to, so I had to break a few connecting strands to get by. I had assumed that it would be gone when I got home. Nope, I brushed right into it, and started jumping around trying to get the web off of my arm and make sure the spider was not on me. My grand daughter opened the door and wanted to know what I was doing jumping around at about the same time I saw the spider running across the sidewalk. Whew!
