i had a pretty hard time finding the MKE spot from the Penguin quote, so i hope this helps.

In the MKE edition there is an editorial comment by the translator re this, spoken by Madame Verdurin about M. de Charlus:

"What a rattle * he is! What a rattle! Oh, if it comes to rattles, he's a famous rattle!"

[* Mme. Verdurin uses here the word _tapette_, being probably unaware of its popular meaning. C. K. S. M.]

My guess is that Mme Verdurin was well aware of its meaning, which google-translate tells me is 'pansy'.
