Ramla Zareen Ahmad | 29 comments Hello everyone,

I would like to put in a recommendation request on behalf of a friend. She's not a Goodreads member, so she can't put in a request herself.

The genres she is interested in are Psycho-Thriller and Romantic Suspense. The books should feature a psychopath/serial-killer/stalker who is obsessed with some woman.

If you could please recommend some good books that meet her requirements, it would be very much appreciated by both of us :-)

Thank you :-)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 70 comments Creep by Jennifer Hillier is one of my all-time favorites. The sequel, Freak by Jennifer Hillier is also very good.

Understandable, I like some of my favorite authors' books better than others. I just watched the trailer of Wonderland and, yes, it comes out 10/5.

I have books all over the place in our condo and a cardboard jungle full of them in storage. And, yet, I can't stop adding to my piles and TBR's. There's nothing like a shiny new one.

It would be really hard to top Creep & Freak. They set the bar pretty high. We have a little library in our condo building for residents to share books. I put Freak down there last year. I never saw it again.

I have toppling piles on top of my bookcase headboard. It's just a matter of time...Hubby keeps asking what my intentions are for my books and magazines(total zine junkie too). What do your family members say? He also asks if they were always there and whether the piles are getting higher :D

I don't even buy my books(review copies, giveaway wins...) and magazines(free subscriptions, survey point redemptions, random unsolicited copies) but they still take up space. I don't generally keep my books/magazines.

Thanks for accepting my friend invite :)

Justin (rockstarintraining) Something contemporary... go with You by Kepnes. Sorry, I can't link to it from my phone.

A better, older book is The Collector by Fowles. I hope that helps!

message 16: by Justin (new)

Justin (rockstarintraining) Oh. check out my review of You first for more info. It's much more graphic and erotic so may but be a good recommendation unless she's cool with that.

This one's on my TBR list. I received it from Netgalley but didn't get to it on time and it got archived :(

Ramla Zareen Ahmad | 29 comments Mona and Loretta, it's about the same with me! :-) Not only do I keep on adding books to my already huge collection but as a result I keep on needing to buy a bigger bookshelf after every few years too! :-) The shelves of the previous one actually broke under the weight of the books! :-) My husband tries to be patient but he cannot refrain from pointing out now and then that I own more books than a normal sized book store! Lolz :-) Well, in my opinion, this is a bit of an exaggeration, but I have to admit that this statement has full potential to turn into a reality in near future! :-)

My husband tells people that when the Library of Congress needs another book, they call me. I have been giving a LOT of books away but there are always new ones to take their place.

I loved The Collector; both the book and the movie

message 27: by Skye (new)

Skye | 2105 comments I stopped adding to my TBR list and I am waiting for some books to come by mail to review---I have begun to be very selective and, seriously, I feel a little more normal to have a smaller batch of books all around me: don't get me wrong, my books were getting out of control, so I stopped buying and I only read and review books of choice; it's like reclaiming a little control.

message 28: by Steven (new)

Steven Moore Apologies--I just saw this thread. All the answers are good. If you hate authors beating their own drum, don't read any farther. Otherwise, one of my new novels this year, Silocon Slummin'...and Just Gettin' By, has exactly the situation described in the root of this thread (check out my Goodreads author page). It's only in ebook format, though.

Chelsie (chelzlou) I just read a really good book I won by Paul Cleave called Joe Victim! I would suggest that to those who like crazy psychopaths and this has more than one of them! This is actually the second book, I have not read the first, The Cleaner but will definitely look to pick that one up as well!

Yes, I understand what you mean. With so many books out there and not enough time to read them all, even I have become somewhat selective about what books to read. Plus, I now try only to keep those books in my bookshelves which I think that I might want to re-read, and I donate the rest to the library. However, even with these measures, I still keep on needing to buy a bigger bookshelf after every few years! :-)

Ramla Zareen Ahmad | 29 comments BACK WITH A NEW REQUEST :-)

Hello everyone,

It's been a while since I was active here, and first of all, I'd like to thank you all again for your recommendations for my friend. We both appreciate it very much :-)

Now I'm back―this time with a recommendation request for myself :-)

I'm usually into golden-age mysteries, cozy mysteries, and cute, reasonably clean contemporary romances. However, occasionally―like now―I go through phases when I crave some thrill and excitement, lol, and venture out of my comfort zone into the world of romantic suspense :-)

Some of my favourite authors of this genre are: Toni Anderson, Sandra Brown, Catherine Coulter, Janie Crouch, Diana Duncan, Cindy Gerard, Rachel Grant, Linda Howard, Melinda Leigh, Judith McNaught, Karen Rose, Nora Roberts, and Norah Wilson.

These days I'm reading PVAD: FBI Series by Calle J. Brookes. (I got the first two books for free on Amazon).

Watching (PAVAD FBI Romantic Suspense, #1) by Calle J. Brookes Watching, Wanting (PAVAD FBI Romantic Suspense, #2) by Calle J. Brookes Wanting, Hunting (PAVAD FBI Romantic Suspense, #5) by Calle J. Brookes Hunting, and so on.

The stories are interesting, and I've become attached to the characters. The writing and editing could be better―which is why this author hasn't made it to my favourites―but other than that, I'm quite enjoying the books :-)

Anyway, if anyone could please recommend me some good contemporary romantic suspense books, I'd really appreciate it. Series are fine, but I'd prefer it if each book could be read as a standalone. Happy endings. No cliffhangers. Plus, nothing too dark and grim. Or dry and clinical. I should be able to care about the characters, and if there is a bit of humour here and there, so much the better. The books don't have to be particularly clean. As I said, I'm prepared to venture out of my comfort zone while reading this genre. Besides, if a scene gets too graphic for me, I can always skip it. Lol. Romance/suspense ratio should be balanced: 50/50 or 40/60.

Of course, I'll also be checking out the books already mentioned in this thread which I haven't read yet, but if anyone can think of other authors/series/books matching my requirements, please do let me know :-)

Thank you :-)

Hi Leena,

I read some books by Mary Burton. They were good, though some of them felt more like crime thrillers than romantic suspense.

I'll check out Caroline Mitchell. Thanks for the recommendation :-)

Hi Leena,

I checked out all the Romantic Suspense recommendations I recently got and decided to start with Cold Target Cold Target by Patricia Potter by Patricia Potter.

Enjoyed it a lot. Looking forward to reading more books by this author. Thanks again for telling me about her :-)

message 39: by Christine (new)

Christine Mathieu | 583 comments I like Isabelle Holland, Nancy Thayer (but only what she wrote between 1980 and 2000), Susan Howatch (the early novels, before she turned to religious themes), Barbara Erskine, K. C. McKinnon, Susanna Kearsley, Kitty Ray, and very few novels of Nora Roberts.
Tried the newer novelists like Nikki French and Sandra Brown, but just couldn't get into them.

message 40: by Christine (new)

Christine Mathieu | 583 comments I can recommend Susan Howatch (April's Grave, Call in the Night), Isabelle Holland, Judith Michael (Deceptions, A Tangled Web), Nicci French and of course Daphne DuMaurier (Rebecca, The House on the Strand, Frenchman's Creek).
Don't forget V. C. Andrews Dollanganger series.

Hi Christine,

So glad to meet another fan of Daphne du Maurier :-) I used to read her when I was into Historical Romantic Suspense/Gothic Romance. Very much enjoyed Rebecca and Jamaica Inn. I also enjoyed Victoria Holt's books. I now prefer Contemporary Romantic Suspense though. I'll check out the authors you recommended. Thank you :-)

message 42: by Christine (new)

Christine Mathieu | 583 comments I prefer contemporary gothic, too, but can't seem to find any among today's authors. That's why I reread Isabelle Holland, Susan Howatch, DuMaurier and a few others.

Almost 40 years ago I thoroughly enjoyed reading Victoria Holt's Daughters of England series which she published under her pseudonym Philippa Carr. It starts in the middle of the 16th century and follows the same family over the next 400 years (20 volumes).

Ramla Zareen Ahmad | 29 comments Christine wrote: "I prefer contemporary gothic, too, but can't seem to find any among today's authors."

Contemporary Gothic? That's a new term for me. Does it mean Romantic Suspense in a Contemporary setting? If so then maybe I could help you find some good books. Do you have any specific requirements? Like a particular trope (serial killer, bodyguard, hostage situation, witness protection, cult, human trafficking etc)? Or any other preference?

message 44: by Christine (new)

Christine Mathieu | 583 comments I particularly like novels which take place in the wilderness like "Angels Fall" and "Sanctuary" or "Into The Wilderness" by Sara Donati. Books located in big cities never interested me. The only exception is Mary Higgins Clark (many of her crime novels are taking place in Manhattan).

Hmm. Well, have you read Up Close and Dangerous by Linda Howard? That might fit with what you're looking for.

You can also check out Patricia Potter books if you like. Some of them might meet your requirements.

Hope this helps. I'll let you know if I think of anything more. Happy Reading :-)
