DJ (djdivaofjava) | 659 comments Thanks Diane D.
I might wait until after the festive period at this point as starting to get really busy and I get the feeling that it is something that it would be best enjoyed if able to be read in great swathes of time rather than just fitted around other things as and when.......

message 1252: by Leslie (new)

Leslie Shimotakahara (lshimo) I just finished rereading an old favourite, Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises, which I'm writing about in chapter seven of my literary memoir. It made me miss Paris and (strangely) the feeling of being melancholy and alone.....

Shelli Diane D. wrote: "I don't know, Jo. I have not read World Without End yet, the sequel to The Pillars of the Earth, and I'm hoping I don't need to remember anything at all from Pillars when I..."

These take place in totally different time periods...I think they can be stand alone....I haven't read WWE yet either.

Oh don't worry Di. There not at ALL related. Totally different characters and so on well...similar to ones before but different anyway.

Karla (bookarita) | 289 comments Has anyone been watching The Pillars of the Earth series on Stars channel? I have seen the first three in the series but feel a tad disappointed with it.

message 1257: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) Yas, thanks for that comment that they are not at all related. I think that is what has been holding me back from picking it up. I've been hoping to hear that!

Karla, Shelli, yes, we will have to get to it in the new year? Funny, I'm already slating books to read in 2011! Unfortunately I don't have Stars so did not see the Pillars of the Earth series -- but when we saw Ken Follett in person a few weeks back, he said how VERY pleased he was with the series. He said when he went to the set he was blown away by how perfectly the town and all the artifacts were depicted.

They are huge (as you know :) and really epic reads, so probably best to read without distractions. I loved Pillars when I read it.

message 1259: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) | 659 comments Hi Diane D....
Everyone that has read them seems to love them...
I watched the first part of the series and will probably watch the rest....Kind of the way I'm doing with the Milenium Trilogy...So maybe I should wait and read in February so that I don't pick up on every teeny detail! Plus what it I get Christmas Books that I just have to read??

message 1260: by Karla (new)

Karla (bookarita) | 289 comments That was very interesting info. Diane about Follet. I think for me I was discussed at myself! They have such a hottie as the bad guy....LOL! I looked forward to seeing the bad guy!! So wrong but so right at the same time :P

Karla there's something sexy about a bad guy ... when I think of the "good guys" I dated in my (much) younger days, I was bored! I always went for the bad guy, they were so more fun and sexy! :)

message 1263: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) | 659 comments Hi DD
Yes it does.....I think we are due to get it at the start f September....
And er well I tends to date "the bad boys" when I was younger and much ad I love Husband I'm glad I did that and had that fun or he wouldn't have stood a chance.....I had a lot of responsibility when I as younger and I need the distraction of "the bad boy" LOL...even my Mum thought it was good for me.....
Mind you she also said that when 40 came I should get myself a toyboy!! I told Husband so he lost weight and started working out....His reasoning was he was giving me a new guy in the old guy.......Sweet.

message 1264: by Karla (new)

Karla (bookarita) | 289 comments Your husband DJ sounds like a good natured man. Some men would have taken offense to that! I married my bad boy and he isn't bad at all anymore just a hard working man determined to succeed. Funny how men change when they mature....LOL

message 1265: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) Love both of your posts, Karla and DJ! DJ, I love your mom -- get yourself a toyboy!! LOL.

message 1266: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) | 659 comments Hi yeah my Mum she was a pretty unique Woman.....
I warned Husband well enough about how quirky some of my upbringing had been early on....
I mean my Mum always celebrated the date of my conception (er no we aren't religious).
She wanted a big family but after 7 miscarriages finally got me so we had a pretty special bond.
We could talk about ANYTHING...I didn't realize how special and unique it hd been until meeting Husband.
FYI when I was about 8 years old she described him to a tee! Height Build attitude Patience the works and even how moody I would get with him at times...
Don't tell him(LOL) but sometimes I think Husband was my last gift from her.....

message 1267: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) DJ, that is a very sweet and personal post about you and your Mum...thank you for sharing all that!

Shelli Nadia wrote: "Frankenstein! That would be a good one - I forgot about that one. How was it?"

I personally didn't like it as much as Dracula.

Karla (bookarita) | 289 comments Yay Jo! Can't wait to share thoughts on it soon. I'm about to start chapter 19 and hope to finish this weekend.

message 1285: by Karla (new)

Karla (bookarita) | 289 comments Sounds like you are going to fly through it Jo if you are that far already. The middle is the slower part so far lots of info to absorb. But still very good!

message 1291: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (stephbelch) | 5 comments Right now I am reading These Is My Words by Nancy E. Turner and again this seems to be coming one of my favorites. I will not lie, I kind of know what happends in the end, and I am dreading finishing it because at this point it is so good, but I do plan to get then next two in this series.

I just read Gracelingand loved it. AlsoEnder's Gamewas great too.

message 1293: by Charles (new)

Charles I'm re-reading Gibbon's Decline and Fall in an edition not on Bible paper, but I doubt of that interests anyone. I'm also re-reading Olivia Manning's Balkan Trilogy and am, if anything, more irritate than the last time. This is unfair, because one of the subjects of the book is the female protagonist's learning to stick up for herself, but the other characters against whom she is pitted are such jerks. Anyone reading The Finkler Question or Franzen's new one? I have not heard flattering things. Life is too short to read dubious things.

Saw the movie....

message 1295: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarah23l) I'm reading Dark Lover and hope to start The Forsyte Saga today after I finish cleaning bathrooms and writing a paper for class. Gives me something to look forward to ;-) On audio I'm listening to Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, If I Stay, and Her Mother's Hope. The first two are pretty good, but the third one is kinda boring.

message 1296: by Karla (last edited Nov 12, 2010 04:47AM) (new)

Karla (bookarita) | 289 comments I also started Dark Lover yesterday and I swear I was turning nocturnal as late as it kept me up. I won't be able to read today. It's going to be a very busy one from morning till late :(

Sarah...I enjoyed ELAIClose...more so after the entire book was finished...I feel it's one of those that you need to have the whole story...it gets a bit choppy in parts.

message 1299: by Shelli (new)

Shelli I want to hear your thoughts on If I Stay.

message 1300: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarah23l) Shelli - ELAIC is definitely a bit choppy. I am so confused about the character who lost his ability to speak and has to write down what he wants to say. Where did he come from?!
I'll prob finish listening to If I Stay today, so I'll let you know what I think. So far it's an easy, entertaining read.
