I read The Virgin Suicides..I liked it but not nearly as much as Middlesex by the same author.

message 1206: by Gitte (new)

Gitte (gittetofte) I didn't really like virgin suicides. It was one of those rare things where I actually preferred the movie. I loved Middlesex, though! One of my favorite books ever!

message 1207: by Maggie (new)

Maggie | 44 comments I enjoyed The Virgin Suicides, both book and movie. Also loved Middlesex.

I'm reading The Electric Michelangelo by Sarah Hall - its so hard going, lots and lots of desscriptive prose but not too much plot so far - and I'm over half way through. Can't wait to finish it!

message 1208: by Brandi (new)

Brandi (brandicryer) | 2 comments I really enjoyed the movie so I figured I would enjoy the book as well (I do!) I also love that the author is from Michigan and the setting is in Michigan as well. I can't wait to read Middlesex either, but I figured I'd read the smaller of the two books first haha.

I'm from MI so that was interesting for me too. I think you will really like Middlesex...it's such a different story and Cal is a very memorable character.

Donna - I am halfway through The Falls: A Novel and I love it. If it keeps up, I will give it 4 or 5 stars. If you are a fan of Joyce Carol Oates, I think you will like it as well.

DJ (djdivaofjava) | 659 comments Walden and Symposium.

message 1218: by Maggie (new)

Maggie | 44 comments Well I just finished Dracula - which was fantastic - so I thought I'd read something completely different so chose Farm Fatale by Wendy Holden - bit of escapism!

message 1219: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) I just finished Falls, The by Joyce Carol Oates -- 4 stars, really liked it.

message 1221: by Shelli (new)

Shelli I just finished The Witching Hour..I would give it 3.5 stars if I could...the parts that were good..were really good, but it was way too long!

message 1222: by Shane (new)

Shane (Shaneybobs) | 80 comments 6 chapters into Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier. Much, much better than I had expected! A real page turner!

message 1223: by Shane (new)

Shane (Shaneybobs) | 80 comments Well woth reading. I always thought Hitchcock's adaptation of it was superb. But it's clear that the book is going to much better!

Good to hear...this is on my books I own challenge for next year.

message 1225: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) I think anyone who reads Rebecca will enjoy it.

message 1226: by Leslie (new)

Leslie Shimotakahara (lshimo) I just finished Lisa Moore's February and absolutely loved the novel's languid pace. It's a beautiful meditation on a young mother's grieving in the face of disaster.... My full review can be read at: www.the-reading-list.com

Diane (dianedj) Yas, you're doing some great reading!
Jo, I'll be reading The Gargoyle in December so I'll join up with the thread then.

message 1236: by Shelli (new)

Shelli Just ok for me so far....not holding my attention like In the Woods....Sarah?

message 1237: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) | 659 comments Fingersmith was great....if you like it you would be well suited to enjoy Willie Collins THE WOMAN IN WHITE......
Just a suggestion.....It is one of my favorites I have to confess! LOL!

message 1238: by Shelli (new)

Shelli I've read and enjoyed both DJ!

message 1239: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) | 659 comments Good to know Shelli...Its always good when someone else likes something too...

I'm reading Sybille Bedfords A LEGACY and really enjoying it,definately my kind of book!

message 1240: by Karla (new)

Karla (bookarita) | 289 comments Been a while since I've visited my other groups sorry. I'll try to pop in more. I'm reading The Girl Who Played with Fire and it's gripping loving it!

message 1241: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) | 659 comments The film wad excellent..I will need to try and rest it before the final one is released in a few weeks....

message 1242: by Karla (new)

Karla (bookarita) | 289 comments I know I will be reading book three in this series straight away. I still have a ways to go to complete this but it's been a while since I read Dragon Tattoo and I'm finding I have to wipe the cobwebs out of my brain to keep all the characters straight. I should have read this a long time ago!

message 1243: by Shelli (new)

Shelli I had to read them immediately...I flew thru the 3rd one.

message 1244: by Karla (new)

Karla (bookarita) | 289 comments That would be a brilliant plan Jo, if your not to bogged down with reads. I'm thinking I should just give up on the idea of sleep till I finish this series. I find Lisbeth Slander one of the most troubled, startling, tiny but packed full of dynamite heroines in crime fiction. Very kewl as a cucumber kick ass chick. Can't wait to see the movies.

message 1245: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) Shelli, Karla, Jo, I loved the entire series as well. Lisbeth is my favorite heroine. I also had trouble keeping everyone straight and remembering details and for that reason I am waiting awhile to read Fall of Giants since the second installment isn't coming out for 2 years.

message 1246: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) I don't know, Jo. I have not read World Without End yet, the sequel to The Pillars of the Earth, and I'm hoping I don't need to remember anything at all from Pillars when I do!

message 1247: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) | 659 comments LOL I'm about to read Pillars maybe I should wait to January so that I can read it and World without end back to back?
Any Opinions?

message 1248: by Diane (last edited Oct 21, 2010 08:55AM) (new)

Diane (dianedj) DJ, you could remember enough about Pillars by January if you read it now I'll bet. I read it like 15 years ago so I have no memory of it!

message 1249: by Karla (new)

Karla (bookarita) | 289 comments I'm in the same boat with you Diane! I haven't read the sequel World without end either and read Pillars probably in 09 I'm guessing.

message 1250: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) Karla, it would truly be like a "stand alone" book for me at this point -- LOL.
