message 1107: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I decided I needed a comfort book, a re-read to relax with, so I'm reading Death of a Citizen by Donald Hamilton, the first Matt Helm book. It's a shame the movies with Dean Martin were so cheesy. Helm is an American James Bond without the fancy gadgets. The book I have is one of the original paperbacks from the 60's, so it's pretty amazing that it is still readable. I know I've read it at least half a dozen times over the years.

Jason Clay (goodreadscomwillshakespeare) | 74 comments Have read Collider and started on The American Future: A History. Should be good as Schama is a first rate historian. Plus American history fascinates me generally.

I love American history, I too find it fascinating, particularly the early 40s/50s period.

message 1120: by John (new)

John Cicero | 2 comments Hi Everyone,

My name is John Cicero and I am a fantasy/adventure author. I'm new to Goodreads and not sure if it's appropriate or not to talk about my own novel or not, so I figure we could talk about the genre it's in instead

I'm curious what everyone’s thoughts are on fantasy/adventure and if you feel the genre is gaining strength or not?

Give me an idea of where you think the genre is going.

And, if you have a moment and the interest check out my website and at... www.RainbowsShadow.com

Take care, John

message 1121: by Jason (new)

Jason Clay (goodreadscomwillshakespeare) | 74 comments Hi John my thoughts on fantasy/adventure is that sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. It has to have believable characters in it that you care about. Graceling didn't do it for me, because I couldn't empathise with the central character. Lord of the rings is the bench mark by which I judge all fantasies.

Sarah (pythonette83) | 9 comments Navigation of a Rainmaker

Not something I would have normally picked up to read had I not picked it up cheap at the charity shop. So far, I'm hooked!

I couldn't get into The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I think I will have to return to it when I have more time to concentrate on it fully.

message 1123: by Maggie (new)

Maggie | 44 comments I think I'm going to start Brava Valentine by Adriana Trigiani- just want something light after finishing The Story of Edgar Sawtelle - which is my book of the year, brilliant. (I thought I'd already read my books of the year with The Help and Cutting for Stone, but Edgar was just so brilliant!)

message 1124: by John (new)

John Cicero | 2 comments Jason,

I agree. At the end of the day it all comes down to your love of the characters. Do you care about them or not.

message 1125: by Maggie (new)

Maggie | 44 comments Oh I loved Edgar, and Henry, and Almondine the dog. I think the chapter when she was just missing Edgar so much, and was old, and she went looking for him and obviously died - was so sad. And the chapter when Edgar helped in the whelping of his first litter of puppies was so touching and well written. A fabulous book.

message 1126: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I'm still reading the Matt Helm series by Donald Hamilton. I'm up to the 10th book, The Betrayers, which is set in Hawaii. Only 17 more to go after this one! I wonder if I'll read them all? So far, they've been a real joy.
