In Vampires, Scones and Edmund Herondale I see that a patten had started and traveled down the line. Sure, it's common for shadowhunters to lose their parents at a young age, but this as been going on for generations especially with the Herondales. How cruel life is.

Also, Herondales are so...you know! It's amazing. They can't be tamed.
