Ah yes, finally reading the book of my most liked review on Goodreads. Despite me taking literal years to read this, I enjoyed it immensely. I’m excited to continue in the Shadowhunter world and see more of these characters within the stories. Cassandra Clare is a writing genius. She makes you feel so deeply and completely for every single character, and it doesn’t matter how long it’s been since last diving into the Shadowhunter world, I remember everything and am excited to be in the world once again.

Okay so its TWO YEARS since I've published this review and *just today* (29/3/16) this review just hit 300 likes and I've FINALLY updated this review to reflect all the glory that is Magnus Bane. I've been naughty and still haven't read this novel, but hopefully when I've finished the TMI series (I know, I'm so far behind) I will be able to pick this up. So as of now, all info, blurbs, cover art, etc. has been completed on this review so all you big Cassandra Clare fans (like me) can enjoy! Thanks you guys for your support on my reviews and lets let Magnus Bane live on forever!

I so enjoyed my time reading The Bane Chronicles! This is one of the only books from The Shadowhunter Chronicles that I had not previously read more than once, so it was interesting to re-read it 4 years later!

I treasured getting to know Magnus better through his lifetime so much. It's fascinating how there is a distinct change in his character when comparing the stories where he is much younger and more care-free to tales of him being older, wiser, and more mature. I think the complexity of Magnus Bane is perfectly captured in this group of novellas and would absolutely recommend to anyone interested in gaining a larger history on his character.

I clutched my pearls so very tightly when I found out that there was an anthology that starred Magnus, my favorite character in all of Cassie Clare’s works. Magnus is the bisexual, Asian, warlock of my dreams, and I love him with every bone in my body. I truly believe he is one of the best characters in all of literature.

I was a little apprehensive going in to this, because I didn’t realize that all of the stories were cowritten with other authors. But honestly? They blended together very well and read just like all the other Shadowhunter novels thus far. Each of these stories are about fifty pages long, but it was so much fun to dip my toes into all these different cities, years, and adventures.

The Midnight Heir was easily, hands down, without question, my favorite story in this entire collection. And I am willing to grovel, beg, plead, maybe even commit a minor felony, to be able to learn more about James and Grace. (Oh my gosh, my lovely friend Lance just told me about The Last Hours and I’m happier than I’ve ever been!) But I am going to break down each short story with my thoughts, opinions, and individual star rating!

➽ What Really Happened in Peru - ★★

“Humans did not live forever. They could only hope what they made would endure.”

This follows Magnus and many of the different years that he spent in Peru. In 1791, with Ragnor Fell, and taverns, and monkeys, and pirates! Then we get to see Magnus in 1885 with Ragnor and Catarina, where Magnus is accepting a mysterious job. Then we jump to 1890 when Magnus meets Imasu and we get to see him drinking, riding magic carpets, mentioning people from TID, and falling in love. This was my favorite year, because there is just something so pure about seeing three very different warlocks coming together to talk about their lives, their demon fathers, and the expectations that have been placed upon them just by living a life that they didn’t ask for. Lastly, we see the year 1962, where Magnus meets a person named Kitty who is also a con-artist, a thief, and someone who is looking for love and adventure. And even though these little glimpses were fun, I was still just let down that we don’t truly know why Magnus was banned from Peru.

➽ The Runaway Queen - ★★★

“A count! Named Axel! A military man! With black hair and blue eyes! And in a state of distress! Oh, the universe had outdone herself.”

This short story follows Magnus in Paris during the French Revolution in 1791. And apparently Paris is the place to be if you’re a vampire (which I highkey love, actually). Magnus attends a party with Henri de Polignac, then meets Axel von Fersen and accepts a difficult mission to smuggle Marie Antoinette and her family out of the city, before the desperate people take matters into their own hands. Of course, nothing goes as planned, and Magnus somehow acquires a pet monkey that he names Ragnor, but it was still a really enjoyable story and adventure.

➽ Vampires, Scones, and Edmund Herondale - ★★★★★

“I was born to be a warrior, and I was born to be with her.”

Holy shit, all the stars! ALL THE STARS! I loved this one so much! Not only did we get to see Will’s parents, Edmund and Linette (which broke and warmed my heart), we got to see Woolsey’s older brother, Ralf, a baby Charlotte, Benedict Lightwood (yikes), some Morgensterns, and Camille herself (who I have honestly always liked)! This story surrounds a meeting were the downworlders are trying to make a treaty with the shadowhunters; but like always, the shadowhunters are shitty to them. But seeing so many faces, and so many relatives, of people that we know and love from TID – ahhh, I just loved it so much! This was perfection, and give me all the 1857, London Institute, stories with Magnus going on adventures with these people and fighting demons. Also, this story beautifully emphasizes the power of unconditional love and how it is always worth everything.

➽ The Midnight Heir - ★★★★★

“…For one Herondale to be saved by love, and another Herondale dammed by it.”

Oh my gosh, I loved this one so much, too! I mean, the Tessa, Will, and Jem cameos were perfection all on their own, but seeing their descendants? It still makes me feel equal parts heartbreak and love. Also, ever since finishing City of Heavenly Fire, I have been obsessed with wanting to know more about the Blackthorns! In this story, Tatiana Blackthorn has called upon Magnus to do a terrible job, but before he finds his way to her abandoned garden estate, he finds a young James Herondale and has to escort him back to the London Institute. Friends, I’m not crying over this beautiful co-parenting triad; I’m weeping the happiest of tears. I loved this story so much, and my only complaint is that I hope we get more James and Grace in the future. Also, why does every Herondale just break my heart over and over again? I honestly do not understand.

➽ The Rise of the Hotel Dumort - ★★

“Nothing is permanent," Magnus said. "I know this from experience. But you can get new things. You can meet new people. You can go on.”

I loved how this short story was set in 1929 New York, while Magnus is trying to run a speakeasy. And seeing his magic camouflage this secret pub into a tea party was pretty much the best thing ever. Sadly, that’s all I truly enjoyed about it. I mean, I guess seeing Hotel Dumort almost become a portal to Hell was pretty cool, too. But this story, and the new characters, just didn’t win me over as hard in this one.

➽ Saving Raphael Santiago - ★★★

“Love did not overcome everything. Love did not always endure. All you had could be taken away, love could be the last thing you had, and then love could be taken too.”

My heart, my poor broken heart. This literally felt like torture to read after finishing City of Heavenly Fire. Raphael Santiago was also a character that didn’t hide his pain and anger; and I always respected that. But everything he had to go through? Man, oh man. I will say that this story got pretty dark and trigger warnings for kidnapping, murder, and maybe even pedophilia. Louis is for sure the most evil person I’ve seen in the Shadowhunter world yet. Basically, in 1953, Magnus is a private detective, and Guadalupe, Raphael’s mother, hires him to find her son. This story just made me feel every single emotion. I also enjoyed seeing Hotel Dumort start to become the vampire lair. But the shining star of this book was obviously Raphael and his mother and the unconditional love that a mother should always have for her child. Ah, I didn’t ask for these tears all over again.

➽ The Fall of the Hotel Dumort - ★

“Because in the end nothing is worse than seeing the fall of one you loved. It was somehow worse than losing a love. It made everything seem questionable. It made the past bitter and confused.”

This was easily my least favorite in the collection. Like, it read like I was back in elementary school watching police officers tell us about the D.A.R.E campaign. Basically, this one is set is 1977 New York, and Camille and her vampires are getting high from drinking the blood of humans on drugs, and they get really addicted. I did enjoy the ending with the memory spell, but that was about it.

➽ What to Buy the Shadowhunter Who Has Everything (And Who You're Not Officially Dating Anyway) - ★★★★

“This was love, new and bright and terrifying…”

Firstly, I will say that it’s really skeezy that Alec was indeed seventeen when he and Magnus started at least kissing one another. I don’t want to make light of that whatsoever, and I completely think it was wrong. But if you ignore that, I really loved this short story and seeing a glimpse in the Shadowhunter world before everything went down in TMI. I also really loved the scene with Izzy and Magnus; it was pure, perfect, and everything I’ve ever wanted. Also, I love how this heartfelt story was going on with a blue demon just hanging out in the apartment.

➽ The Last Stand of the New York Institute - ★★★★

“It was one of the few things he had to believe in, the possibility of beauty when faced with the reality of so much ugliness.”

The start of this novel and the homophobia really surprised me. I actually loved how Cassie Clare blatantly brought it up, rather than using metaphors with the oppression of the Downworlders, even though it hurt to see. But this short story also made me fall even more in love with Catarina, who is working at an HIV clinic because even people in the medical field can hold hateful prejudices. But the middle of this story, we got to see the behind the scenes start of Valentine and his (mostly) brainwashed circle. But the end of this story was the shining light! Seeing Tessa accept Clary with literal open arms made me tear up. Seeing her talk about her loves, her losses, and giving Jocelyn’s child a new start was really beautiful and made me very emotional. I loved this one, friends.

➽ The Course of True Love (And First Dates) - ★★★★

“And silver, though few people knew it, was a rarer metal than gold.”

Oh lord, this was adorable. This story shows Magnus and Alec’s first date and it was pretty sweet. Again, I will say that it is incredibly not okay that a 300+ year old warlock is dating a seventeen-year-old, but if you take that away from the equation then it was a really sweet and realistic depiction of an awkward and messy first date. Well, besides going to bar and having to fight a werewolf together.

➽ The Voicemail of Magnus Bane - ★★

“Please don’t ever tell Jace I said he was a badass.”

This short story is just a transcript of voicemails that the Shadowhunters left for Magnus after the end of City of Lost Souls, when he and Alec broke up. It just wasn’t enjoyable and was a lot of harassment even though I know that it was coming from a place of good. I just, thought this was honestly a bit pointless, but I know it was supposed to be heartwarming. I will also say that I think it was a really poor choice for a concluding story, because it for sure finished the entire anthology on a low note.

I gave The Bane Chronicles three stars overall, because out of a possible 55 stars (5 stars possible for each of the 11 stories) this collection accumulated 35 stars (~63%)! But I really do think this is such an important addition to this world, and I very much feel like it is a necessary read. Even if it just means that you get to meet James Herondale.

Woah looking through the comments all I can see is hate....for Cassandra Clare and how she is milking the fanchise,for a start:
STOP if you dont want to read another one her books you don't have to- we are not making you! People who actually want to read her book can buy them and read them and LOVE THEM.
I love the Shadow Hunter world and I dont think there is any problem with so many books being out. I love the world and charaters and there is no end to what I want to read about them. If I do one day not want to read about it anymore I will stop, I won't shout and tell everyone how she is milking the series. I just wouldn't read them at all.
Stop hating it- no ones forcing you.

Sorry for that rant just all the haters rant about it saying how she's milking it when most, if not all, of them will buy this book!

This book, unfortunately, did nothing for me.

I remember Magnus Bane being one of my favorite characters of the original TMI series (if you can remember that far back, with all of Clare's publications and planned publications since then), but it's been so long since I read City of Lost Souls that all of my emotional attachment to him has disintegrated into ash.

For someone more connected to this series than I am, this may be a great addition, full of intriguing backstory and unique Magnus humor. But for me, this book was minimally funny and minimally entertaining. 2 gracious stars.

Do you ever feel like a character was written solely for you? I've felt like that three times in my endless turning of pages, and Magnus Bane is one of them. He's so chaotically and unapologetically himself that it's impossible to imagine his hardships. Yet, just like everyone else, he has them. He lives in a world practically of his own creation. He sees the ugly and shatters it with glitter, and kindness, and wisdom, and love. With endless patience, he's the beating heart of these Shadowhunter books, and I can't imagine having never given them a second chance.

Yes, a second chance, because the first time I read through the entirety of Cassie's world, it just didn't hit right. So I watched the show to try and get myself into it, and little did I know that Matthew Daddario and Harry Shum Jr. would take over my life. You see, I loved Magnus the first time through, if he hadn't been in every book, I don't think I would have made it through them. But when I saw Matt and Harry bring Alec and Magnus to life... I had to read these books again. And I fell in love.

I hope that every single day I become just a little bit more like Magnus.

So, back in the end of 2007, I was one of 'those' girls. You know, the ones that built shrines for Clare's writing ability, who desperately wanted to live in the world she created and the ones that proclaimed City of Bones as the best book evah?! <---Yeah. That annoying chick. Trust me, I regret it.

I want to use the "I was young and stupid" excuse and the "I didn't know good quality YA back then", and although they are valid and certainly true, the thing is, I do like The Mortal Instruments (minus the last two installments, but I'll get to that). At first I wasn't that interested in the book, but City of Bones grabbed my attention and earned my genuine affection, and although I really, really want to lower the rating or take it out of my favorites because now I acknowledge how flawed the books are, I won't because I would be betraying a part of myself that will always have an appreciation for these books.

Having said that, I really, really want Clare to just freaking stop. As someone who is somewhat of a fan of all of her books, one would think I am eagerly expecting more and more installments in this franchise. But the truth is that I am sick and tired of this. I keep spending my money on expensive hardcovers just so that I can feel like I've been slapped in the face with the mediocrity of the storyline and storytelling, as was the case with the expansion of The Mortal Instrument: City of Fallen Angels and City of Lost Souls, or to feel betrayed by the glaring similarities between The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices. And now another trilogy is coming? A new compilation of essays? A guide on the world of the Shadowhunters? Another compilation of short stories? No. Please, just no.

It's almost like Clare is a one-trick pony. Move on! Prove you can do something else! I know it's hard to invest so much time in the creation of such a complex world, but you need to let go and improve yourself as a writer. J.K. Rowling built one of the best and most complex worlds in the history of literature. She told her story and she was done, because she knew that, as a writer, she can do more and it is also her responsibility to do more.

The more I think about this, the angrier I get and the less I like her books, so I'll just leave it a that. I might check this out, but I won't promise anything. After I'm done with Clockwork Princess, I don't plan on following any other Shadowhunter any time soon.

MADRE MÍA. Había leído las dos primeras historias cuando salieron y aunque me gustaron, no pensaba que el resto de historias iban a estar guays. Pero he de admitir que las primeras historias no hacen justicia al resto del libro. The Bane Chronicles es una maravilla. Las historias con Sarah Rees Brennan, en general, son mucho mejores que las de Maureen Johnson, pues creo que el estilo de esta segunda varía más del de Cassie. Y eso se nota. · What Really Happened in Peru. Primera historia que se publicó y una de las que más esperada era. La verdad es que entretiene un poco y aunque tiene paja, mantiene el misterio de saber por qué Magnus fue expulsado de Perú.

· The Runaway Queen. El hecho de incluir personajes históricos me parece algo maravilloso y que solo la literatura puede aportarnos. (Las películas también, pero no de la manera que a mí me parece más correcta.) Por lo tanto, esta historia tuvo un par de elementos que me gustaron mucho. El primero fue ver a Magnus es una situación algo más complicada e interesante, a la par que emocionante, y el segundo elemento fue, como he dicho, la conexión con la historia real que tiene. Gran guiño.

· Vampires, Scones, and Edmund Herondale. Tenía muchas ganas de descubrir más sobre el misterioso Edmund. Le robó el corazón a Magnus y se comenta varias veces durante las sagas, pero creo que la historia no está a la altura. La verdad es que es interesante conocer a Edmund, ya que es un personaje realmente atrayente y que creo que puede dar muchísimo juego. Sin embargo, las autoras no se deciden a sacarle todo lo que podrían. Aun y todo, el conocer a Edmund fue genial ♥

· The Midnight Heir. AQUÍ LLEGARON LOS FEELS. La verdad es que NO ME ESPERABA que me hiciesen ESO. Mi corazón se murió varias y veces y de verdad, fue demasiado. Tras el épico final de la saga Los Orígenes y esa aparición mágica en Ciudad del fuego celestial, no estaba preparado para más de lo que hemos tenido aquí. Reencontrarse con personajes tan maravillosos como Tessa, Will y Jem ha sido una experiencia inolvidable, y más al introducir los conflictos de la saga The Last Hours de un modo TAN magnífico.

· The Rise of the Hotel Dumort. Al principio esta historia no me llamaba nada la atención, pero podemos ver aun Magnus más dicharachero y en un ambiente de juerga mucho más distendido, y con menos drama que en relatos anteriores. Es interesante ver a personajes como Camille y conocerles más, pues creo que es el típico personaje que jamás deja de sorprender. Además, se vuelven a enlazar hechos ficticios con hechos reales (en este caso, con el crack de Wall Street del 29).

· Saving Raphael Santiago. De nuevo, se introducen y exploran personajes que son magníficos. Raphael fue un personaje poco utilizado en la saga, pero el poco uso que tuvo fue realmente bueno. Creo que han hecho bien en escribir una historia sobre él, para conocer su trasfondo y la manera de comportarse que tiene en eventos posteriores. El factor religioso, la fe y la esperanza son factores determinantes y llegan a crear una historia cercana.

· The Fall of the Hotel Dumort. Una en teoría segunda parte del quinto relato, pero no deja de ser el fin de una trilogía. Y digo trilogía porque el quinto, sexto y séptimo relato (este) tienen como nexo Nueva York y el Hotel. Además, ocurren en un espacio de tiempo en el que da tiempo a que las cosas cambien y eso crea conflictos diferentes dependiendo de la época. Me gustó, la verdad. Lo disfruté.

· What to Buy the Shadowhunter Who Has Everything (and Who You're Not Officially Dating Anyway). Me declaro fan del título, ya de primeras. Es un relato curioso donde vemos a Magnus sufrir por el regalo de cumpleaños de Alex. Tenemos Malec al cien por cien y un demonio más que interesante que saca sonrisas y que los fans de Los Orígenes recordaremos. Aun y todo, es el menos Malec de los tres relatos Malec que hay.

· The Last Stand of the New York Institute. A ver, esta historia ha sido muy buena en su mitad. La primera mitad es un poco relleno puesto que se plantean ciertos problemas innecesarios. Eso sí, es interesante ver cómo El Círculo de Valentine comienza a atacar con unos jóvenes Robert, Lucian, Maryse y Jocelyn. Por otro lado, y ya que la historia se divide a su vez en dos, la segunda parte presenta un plot twist más que interesante. Sabíamos hasta la fecha que la visita de Jocelyn a casa de Magnus para que eliminase de ella la Visión fue en solitario, es decir, no se había hablado de nada más. Pero en este relato encontramos que Tessa (mi Tessa ♥) se encuentra con ambos en el momento. Y eso hace que mis feelings se mueran de nervios o sea. DEMASIADO.

· The Course of True Love (and First Dates). MALEC. MA-LEC. No puedo con mi alma, de verdad. Creo que era el relato que más ganas tenía de leer. Podemos ver a un Alec inseguro, como el de los primeros libros, y una primera cita desastrosa pero que termina de una forma increíble y que de verdad, hacen que me explote el corazón. Malec, ¿por qué sois tan puta buena pareja?

· The Voicemail of Magnus Bane. El relato extra que incluye mi edición de The Bane Chronicles. Es más que interesante por la cantidad de personajes que hacen aparición, aunque sea solo mediante mensajes de voz. Sin duda, hay momentos para todo. Isabelle y Simon arrancan sonrisas, y Alec y Clary consiguen emocionar. No me lo esperaba tan bueno para ser tan corto.

¡Y eso es todo! La verdad es que salgo MUY contento de mi lectura de The Bane Chronicles. Si Tales of Shadowhunters Academy es la mitad de bueno, me doy con un canto en los dientes.

WHY IS EVERYONE HATING ON CASSANDRA CLARE BECAUSE SHE HAS A NEW BOOK COMING OUT? There is no reason everyone should be saying the stuff they are saying on here. Yes, everyone's entitled to their opinion, but I've read some reviews that say she bullied people in her past, well, the things those people have been saying can be considered as bullying. And who cares if she did it in her past?! Past is past. And it's her life; she doesn't have to tell the entire world about what she's done in the past! I bet everyone who has been saying she is a bully and is stupid and has done really bad things in the past, have done something really stupid in THEIR past! Do you go around and tell EVERYONE about it? No. So why should Cassandra Clare have to do it? And so what if she is making A LOT of series about her world. IT IS HER WORLD. She can do with it what she wants. She can write 10 different series with the same concept. It is not our decision about what she writes. So far, she's only written three series (The Mortal Instruments, The Infernal Devices, The Bane Chronicles). She is planning to write three more series (The Dark Artifices, The Wicked Powers, TLH). SO WHAT? She can write what she pleases. And if no one has realized, she is writing a series with her friend, Holly Black, called The Magisterium (WHICH IS NOT A RIP OFF OF HARRY POTTER! I finally finished this!! This almost took me a month to read so I am SO happy I finally finished it.

I absolutely adore Magnus Bane so I was really excited to get to know him more, but unfortunately the stories in this were really hit or miss. Only 5/11 of the stories I actually enjoyed. The other 6 stories bored me to no end as they were just filler stories that didn't add anything to the shadowhunter chronicles/Magnus' character in my opinion.

I am happy I read it though and I do think it is worth the read for those 5 stories that I really enjoyed, which were:

So, some background on my relationship with Cassie. I read City of Bones first. Wasn't a huge fan of it, didn't particularly like Clary or Jace, I hated their relationship, and I hated Simon. The only redeeming quality was the excellent world-building and Magnus Bane. As I read City of Ashes and City of Glass I felt the same way and decided that was a good place to stop. I have never read City of Fallen Angels.

Then, as I heard all the ravings from fans about how much better TID was, and all the raving about Will and Jem, I became curious and wanted to know which side of the love-triangle I would fall on. So I read Clockwork Angel and yes, it is much better. It introduced me to Jem, who is one of the best things Cassie has ever created, the story was very interesting, and Tessa is somewhat better than Clary. At least I don't actively dislike her. But there is one major drawback. Will Herondale is one of the worst things I have ever seen created on paper. I cant even tell you have much I hate him because words do not suffice.

I am always somewhat scared to start a new Cassie Clare book because her world is amazing and it has a lot of potential to impress me but I just seem to hate what she seems to think is a good romance and a good romantic lead. I do intend to keep trying though, by reading each of her new series. But as I said, Magnus Bane is one of the redeeming characters she has created, and I was excited to read about him in his own world.



Each story in this book was interesting in its own right. I won't say which was my favourite because they were all interesting, entertaining, funny, and they all taught me something new about Magnus Bane. That is the best thing about this book. The overall experience of getting to know Magnus Bane better. He never received this kind of undivided attention before and I feel like I know him intimately now. I don't know how much he appeared in the latter books of TMI, but this gave me a whole new view of him and I love him even more. He is an amazing warlock and an amazing person.

I loved seeing the friends he made over the years, the lovers, how he treated people, including Shadowhunters; how he tried to save Raphael, Camille, and innocent werewolf families. He is a hero. But he never stops being Magnus either. He shows up to battle in hot pink. I love his sense of humour too, his sarcasm. That is something I already knew about him, but I really enjoyed seeing more of it. Two side of him worth loving.

I also loved seeing him with Alec. I enjoyed Alec in the books as well, but its different when you see him as Magnus sees him. I never knew Alec was so insecure and shy and good. I loved the way Magnus described him and the way he made him feel. It makes me reconsider finishing TMI, just to get a few more glimpses of Magnus and Alec together. I now have an incredible love and respect for Magnus Bane. I love him more than this series can contain. He is too big for his world. I will keep trying with Cassie Clare, but I have no reason to expect to find anything as great as this by her in the future.

Ein sehr unterhaltsamer Zusatzband rund um meinem Lieblingscharakter aus dem Shadowhunter-Universum. Das Buch besteht aus 10 Kurzgeschichten, welche nicht unbedingt zeitlich logisch sortiert sind.

Ich mochte wie so einige Hintergründe mit Fortschreiten des Buches klarer wurden und auch welche anderen Charaktere man im Laufe der Zeit noch so wieder traf. Einziger Wermutstropfen hierbei war für mich, dass es für meinen Geschmack ein bisschen zu wenig um Alec und Magnus ging.

Der Humor war grandios, eben genau das was mir bei den restlichen Büchern schon immer so an Magnus gefallen hatte in konzentrierter Version. Gefühle spielten leider meistens nicht so eine zentrale Rolle, außer bei den Ausschnitten mit Alec. Auch hätte ich ehrlich gesagt gern noch mehr von Ragnor und Raphael gelesen :D

Als Fazit lässt sich sagen: man braucht dieses Buch nicht unbedingt wegen seiner Handlung zu lesen um die anderen Schattenjäger-Bücher zu verstehen, aber es ist zum Schreien witzig und auch süß und vor allem das bisher unterhaltsamste Buch für mich aus dem Shadowhunter-Universum.

The truth is that re-reading on a character for whom I have so much love, like Magnus, has been a pleasure.
I've always been very curious to know more about the life of this eccentric character , who has always been present in the life of the Shadowhunters both The Mortal Instruments saga, as in the trilogy the infernal devices, which as you know, I love with all my heart :).
So, for me has been incredible that in these short stories the writers have given me the possibility to not only revive to Bane , but also to ancient characters of the sagas that I miss so much !. It was a beautiful reading full of magic, adventure and beautiful quotes.

Book 1: What Really Happened in Peru

Unsatisfactory Drivel.

Be it The Infernal Devices or The Mortal Instruments , Magnus Bane was my favourite character and he will always be. (Yes, even after reading this book). As his stan, I felt like his portrayal in this book was extremely bad.
I was looking forward to my favourite, bisexual warlock with an amazing sense of humour and also maybe his "shiny, glittery" personality.
What I got was an insight into his one-dimensional and childish mind and I KNOW that's not who he is or that the author(s) didn't intend to portray him that way, but that's what it felt like.
Sure, it was funny but do all the chuckles produced overpower the slow and poorly written plot? I don't think so.

again, it's mostly recommended for the hardcore fans.

(we might've had glimpses of it in the main series, but I can't quite recall. beside, I want to live in them, not just as a backstory)
we had Hotel Dumont stories, but they were so dull...
instead of some of those boring stories.

at least we had stories about Alec too. awesome!

Me gustó bastante, es un libro de Magnus y es de mis favoritos de todo el mundo de cazadores de sombras, muchos relatos me parecieron estupendos, pero otros muy aburridos y parecía que estaban ahí solo para rellenar el libro.
Los relatos de Malec fueron mis favoritos y el de Londres. Volver a leer a Tessa, a Will y a Jem me alegro mucho. Además ver la relación de Tessa y Magnus me encanta, la amistad de esos dos es increíble.
Me encanta la parte humorística de Magnus, pero también se ve el dolor y todo lo que sufrio, como es la vida misma y más de alguien inmortal.

Alec es ese abrazo fuerte y acogedor que él merece y necesita.

I wasn't expecting much for a book of novellas about a character I already knew but wow, there are a lot of golden nuggets in these stories from past books, past characters and future ones as well! Absolutely a must-read if you have read and loved The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices :)

1. What Really Happened in Peru ⭐ - Trash. A big nothing.

2. The Runaway Queen ⭐⭐ - Easily could have lived without this one. Didn't add anything to the story.

3. Vampires, Scones, and Edmund Herondale ⭐⭐⭐ - Two words: Linette Owens

4. The Midnight Heir ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - That's how a short story should be. I pretty much hate everything that has to do with the 'old times', so I was hesitant if I should read The Last Hours or not, but now I really want to for Grace Blackthorn.

5. The Rise of the Hotel Dumort ⭐⭐ - I have to know when Magnus found out who his father is exactly.

6. Saving Raphael Santiago ⭐⭐⭐ - Hit hard after City of Heavenly Fire. But we can all agree that Raphael is one of the best characters and deserved better. In the show he deserved to be with Izzy and in the books he just simply deserved better.

7. The Fall of the Hotel Dumort ⭐⭐⭐ - Why is this drugged vampires plotline felt so familiar? Was it in the show?

8. What to Buy the Shadowhunter Who Has Everything ⭐⭐⭐ - Although Alec is one of my favorite characters in the show, this was the first time I actually liked him in the books. Never thought I would ever think of him as cute lol.

9. The Last Stand of the New York Institute ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - "The law is hard, but it is the Law." Yes, give me all the Circle stories.

10. The Course of True Love [and First Dates] ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Alec before kissing Magnus: The law is hard, but it is the Law. / Alec after kissing Magnus: The law is hard, but so am I.

11. The Voicemail of Magnus Bane ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Izzy being captain of the Malec ship. Actually teared up, because I felt the love.

This is the oldest book on my TBR so I finally decided to pick it up on audiobook. And i'm so disappointed :( Had I read this back in 2013 when I got it, back when I was still OBSESSED with TMI, i'm sure I would have loved it. But now I've forgotten literally all of the characters and events and this provides no context and it's just random vignettes of Magnus's life. The entire reason I took off as many stars as I did is because I was booooored. I skim read a ton of stories and put the audiobook on 2.5 times speed as I scrolled Tumblr just to slog through it. I only enjoyed 3 stories out of this, but even those were only like 3 stars individually. I would advise skipping this unless you're reading the entire shadowhunters chronicles and read this right with TMI/TID.
