Buffy the Vampire Slayer question

Did anyone else think that Dawn was going to become the new seed? I thought that was the direction that they where going in at the start. It seemed to makes sense that Dawn would be fading with out magic but still be magic, so I though she would become like a free magic energy source to help restore magic to earth. I would have loved it more if it had had that ending. But poor Xander though!
