i have some words for you. those words are yep. also we were having a discussion in my class one time and some moron said that it should be banned because they killed a child in the book. well i guess to his we should ban almost everything.

Actually, this book was banned last year
XD

Yasmine Zahid I believe the only reason this book was viewed the least bit iconic was because at it's time it was one of the first to establish a young adult dystopian novel so similar to the ones being shoved down everyone's throat daily (Divergent, Hunger Games, etc). So yes I agree, this book is trash and the movie adaptation also makes me want to die.

➳Fiona's not a ogre➳ I loved this book, it is a lot better then the other Lois Lowry books and now to explain everything your complaining about

1. THEY LIVE IN A CORRUPT GOVERNMENT WHERE EVERYTHING AIN'T GOOD WHY ELSE DID HE RUN OFF????

the only thing i disliked was I wish their was more plot it seemed she tossed everything in with not a main plot. I liked the Idea a lot, I just did not like the way Lois Lowry ended it and the way she left a lot of little plot holes.

Also Sade the movie like I said with Scorch Trials is so different so I am not going to even compare it to the book.

And what Sade said about Jonas being 13, Jonas was 11 going on 12, then he turned 12 and was twelve throughout the book. unless Jonas and Gabriel was escaping for a whole year.

I hated it! I never recommend this. It is definitely not for pre-teens or younger. It is much too abstract and too dark.

message 64: by [deleted user] (new)

Exactly. Thank you.
*bows*

Derek Nailed it, MGH101!

I think you just don't understand it.
The entire book is like a huge metaphor. It's like a poem, and seriously? It was incredible!

message 71: by [deleted user] (new)

*shrugs*
I guess

That is the only part i liked too. The color

Libby I think it was SUPPOSED to be disturbing. It was awful. But if you are up for it if you finish the rest of the series it will all come together in the end. I actually tried reading that book and I ended up getting bored. I will try to read it again later because I know that I will like it... it's just the fact I wasn't looking forward to reading it.

message 79: by [deleted user] (new)

Omg hahahahaha

message 80: by [deleted user] (new)

I love really morbid stuff. It doesn't bother me.
At the moment I'm reading WWZ. It's more interesting than scary. Some stories.... *shudders slightly* kinda chilling.

message 81: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm entitled to my opinions.

Joanne The book's pretty good in my opinion, i just think if the author wrote it better more people would like it. but the plot's still okay. The other books in the series were really confusing though

Thats true but still the plot is still existent and I mean the movie is till better than the book.

message 84: by Josh (new) - added it

Josh Weintraub The book was boring and terrible. I agree with you Sean on about how the movie is better than the book..

Gabby McWethy Idiots!! This book is amazing! You can't say that you don't like a book because of small details like 12 year olds bathing people.

message 87: by [deleted user] (new)

No the entire point of the Giver is to help make a "perfect" society and a community that is controlled is normal. That's one reason Hunger Games was this huge deal. Same for Divergent. But hey. I love Hunger Games, but I didn't like this book because:

1. It was boring as stated above.

2. I read this in school. That was very disturbing and my emotions to the book ended up to be negative with all the.... thematic elements you could say. (I MEAN COME ON. THE KID DREAMS OF BATHING THAT GIRL. IS THAT NOT CREEPY????)

3. The way it was written.... sucked. I was only interested when he started to see color.

4. Let's not ignore the fact that this book is about mind control. Derh. It is a warning. Or, a prediction. Hey. Imma conspiracy theorist. Hands down, but this could actually happen in real life. Did you know some schools are saying WW2 never happened? Yeah. A way to just redo history. The sad thing is that, most people are too blind in this world to notice an issue when it is there. I would talk a lot more, but everyone would think I'm some insane person. But those are the 4 reasons I don't like this book.

Now my suspicions on.... life and conspiracies is for a different topic :D
(and yes, i do think the government is behind the alien spaceships XD)

Harley Bennett Jennifer wrote: "Idiots!! This book is amazing! You can't say that you don't like a book because of small details like 12 year olds bathing people."

You really should not call people idiots just because they disagree with you.

Ariel White The book was written well. It does have some elements which may be confusing to children, but probably by middle school you've seen way worse on TV (let's be honest). The dad injecting the smaller twin to kill him was a thematic element, just like Jonas beginning puberty (yes, that's what the bathing dream was all about).

In many cultures, nudity (especially when caring for the very young or very old) does not matter so much - get over it. It's a butt, we all have one.

The entire book was a message on why we should remember the past instead of making a decision to ignore it and cease to teach people the truth, even if it is unpleasant. Without war, how can we have peace? Without knowledge, how can we have freedom? Etc, etc.

I agree with you 100%!

A lot of people could agree with the TV part. XD

message 92: by Anna (new) - rated it 4 stars

Anna I really liked this book, I have read all of the other ones and I think that Son is the most interesting of them all! If you read The Giver read Son next. I am not going to spoil it for you but it is REALLY awesome.

But you have to read gathering blue and messanger to get it entirely. There are characters that carry over.

random name Not really. Ms. Lowry said those books don't really connect and that you can skip over and still understand it.

message 95: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah there are four books. All three frst books dont connect, but the last one connects to all three.

message 96: by Anna (new) - rated it 4 stars

Anna I think that is really cool

message 97: by [deleted user] (new)

I didn't have the heart to read that far.

message 98: by Anna (new) - rated it 4 stars

Anna I think that you should read it. You might think it was good.

message 99: by [deleted user] (new)

Meh. I got other books that are much more of my interests. Magnus Chase, Warriors, The Trials of Apollo, The a last Star.... ERGH SO MANY.....
