I am looking for a book series (Hopefully MG or YA) where the main characters in the subsequent books are secondary characters in the original book.

Rick--any special category of books? For instance, PN books, especially PN romances have that happen.
just any book series where a character from the original book in the main character. I think it wouk d be fun to read. any specific titles would be helpful
A few weeks ago I just happened to be reading through some YA/NA reviews (not genres I read) and I noticed that a lot of reviewers were referring to this trend. Of course, now that I'm trying to find those books, I can't. They were definitely young romances involving love triangles and hotties.
I'll keep this thread in mind in case I wander over to that side of Goodreads again...

I've only read the first one but I think the Stephanie Perkins books Anna and the French Kiss, Lola and the Boy Next Door and (the upcoming) Isla and the Happily Ever After are like this. At least, I know for certain that the Isla of the third book is a minor character in the first book. The Graceling books do a bit of this as well. A secondary character from Graceling is the protagonist of Bitterblue. The main character of Fire also shows up in Bitterblue.
Most of Sarah Dessen's books are set in the fictional town of Lakeview, and some of her characters show up in other books in minor ways.
The Iron Fey series has this. The Lost Prince has the main character's brother from The Iron King as the main character.Heroes of Olympus (The Lost Hero) is similar where characters from the original Percy Jackson series (The Lightning Thief) show up a few times.
Darkness Rising Trilogy (The Gathering) has a few characters show up from the Darkest Powers Trilogy (The Summoning).
School Spirits has a minor character from Hex Hall as the main character.
The Evernight series is the same. Balthazar is from a minor character's point of view.
Not sure if you're into fairly explicit PNR, but the Psy/Changeling series by Nalini Singh has what you're looking for. Here's the first book: Slave to Sensation.
Megan Whalen Turner's A Conspiracy of Kings (book 4 in the series) focuses on a secondary character from The Thief (book 1).
Many of Charles de Lint's books are set in the fictional town of Newford, and a lot of the characters recur in multiple books, sometimes as main characters, sometimes as secondary characters.
Eyeliner of the Gods is one like this. The second book is Chloe, Queen of Denial. There are only the 2 books, but they are a fun read. And yes, the humour IS very important in these 2 books. They are written by 2 different authors, but, despite this, are companion books.
I don't know if you're looking for YA books, but I mentioned the Degrassi series based off of the old Degrasi High show from the 80's on another thread. Each is based off of a character on the show, and while I haven't read the books, I can't imagine that other kids from the show aren't in them. They also had some "general" story books not about one specific character, and some of those were re-released along with some new books when Degrassi The Next Generation came out on TV.GR doesn't seem to have them listed, except for the one below:
Lucy
A peripheral character in Ender's Game is the protagonist of Ender's Shadow. I think they both cover the same span of time. I enjoyed both books a great deal, though I didn't like the other books in the Ender Wiggins saga as much.
The Time novels by Madeleine L'Engle are like this. The first two have Meg as the protagonist, then her little brother Charles (a supporting character in the first two) is the protagonist of the third, her brothers are the protagonists of the fourth, and so on. They begin with A Wrinkle in Time. A Wrinkle in TimeAlso, the following novels have this feature: Harriet the SpyThe Long SecretSport
Pamela wrote: "Also, the following novels have this feature: Harriet the Spy, The Long Secret, Sport..."Holy cow! I adore Harriet -- had no idea there was a THIRD one! ::scurries off to add to list::
The Modern Faire Tales trilogy by Holly Black has Characters that jump back and forth through all 3 books the first is
You could also try
series by Melissa Marr, the characters that were the main in the first are not in the second, they are minor, then they switch again in the third, and so on.
I'm not sure if its the type of series you want but the Pushing the Limits series by Katie McGarry is like that
Andre Norton has a series called Witch World where. depending on which book/sub-series you are reading, some of the previous characters appear. The first book is called Witch World. There are like 30 or so books in the series, so it will keep you busy for a day or two.
Tamora Pierce song of the lioness, the immortals and the protector of the small quartets kinda goes the other way as in the main character in the first 4 books appear in the next books as does the next main character in the following. Then comes a couple that actually follows your directive of a secondary character becoming the main character: trickster series and Beka Cooper series. Also the chrestomanci series by Diana Wynne Jones does this thing you only notice if you look for it, but chrestomanci is a title and the books are about the new chrestomanci before he becomes chrestomanci. So the in the first book the little boy is found by chrestomanci and in the next he is chrestomanci finding a little boy who will be chrestomanci in the next one, except sometimes it's just chrestomanci cleaning up magical mess and they very seldom use his old name, so it might be difficult to figure out who is who.
I don't know what MG means, but there's Piers Anthony's Incarnations of Immortality, beginning with On a Pale Horse. One caveat: it's a bit like reading the same story over and over. But a lot of people like it (I loved the first one.)
In addition to the Chrestomanci series by Diana Wynne Jones, pretty much all of her books listed under 'series' count:- The main characters of Howl's Moving Castle appear in (but are not the focus of) Castle in the Air and House of Many Ways.
- The Dark Lord of Derkholm focuses on the parents and older siblings of a family; Year of the Griffin follows the youngest daughter and friends she makes at school (also she's a griffin).
- One of the main characters of The Merlin Conspiracy is a more minor character in Deep Secret.
- The Dalemark Quartet is particularly fun. Cart and Cwidder follows a family of travelling musicians in a country split between north and south; Drowned Ammet follows a boy who gets caught up in a plot to overthrow an earl in the south; The Spellcoats is basically the 'true story' of the mythology of the land; and The Crown of Dalemark throws characters from all three previous books together, with a brand new (time travelling) character.
Eyeliner of the Gods and it's companion novel Chloe, Queen of Denial are about the same series of events as witnessed by 2 different characters. And yes, the series IS written by 2 different authors.
