“A Long Way Gone”, by Ishmael Beah, is a book about a boy who experiences war at a very young age. Ishmael Beah is the main character and a this is a true story about him. This book takes place in Sierra Leone Africa. He was in war when he about twelve years old and was turned into a different kid almost immediately. Ishmael was running and hiding from the enemies before he got picked up by a group that was fighting back. Before he was picked up by the group and before he knew about the war, he was with his brother and his friends. The kids would walk and listen to rap music or hip-hop and sing and dance to it. One day they were walking to their friends village to help him in a talent show. They stayed over at one of their friend’s houses Khalilou. The next day, Khalilou came home early from school because of the rebels attacking Ishmael’s village. Ishmael went back to his village to find his family. He didn't find his family because the attack happened so fast that everyone scattered for their own safety. Mattru Jong was where Ishmael and his friends were hiding. The rebels then sent a messenger to the village saying that they were attacking soon. Everyone was hiding for about a week. The rebels did not attack. They came out of hiding and about five days later, the rebels then attacked but the boys escaped. Being isolated taught the boys learn how to survive and find their own shelter. They village hopped for a while and each village they went to got raided. Hiding out after a while from hiding out, they were desperate for food, so they returned to Mattru Jong. They went back to the village and they were captured by the rebels. They were forced to their knees and were going to get shot. But they heard other gun shots and the rebels scattered and the boys got away. This began more hiding from the rebels, and eventually Ishmael got separated from his friends. Ishmael kept hiding out in villages and the villages kept getting attacked. At one village, Ishmael was staying with a family for two weeks and after that he left. He went and lived in the woods for quite a while and then came out and met up with a new group of friends. They were hiding out in villages just like him. After a while from hiding they were captured by a group that was fighting the rebels. After joining this group, his life completely changed. “A Long Way Gone” was a great book with a great ending (but I'm not giving it away) and I highly recommend it to other people. This book was filled with action and suspense because of all the raiding by the rebels and Ishmael escaping from them. I hope everyone who reads this book really enjoys it!
I find this to be a fiscinating book. A young boy changes from hiding from the enemy, to standing up against them by fighting, is amazing and shows how war can change anybody. I found this review to be a bit revealing and spoiled some parts that would've been better if read by the reader, not summarized in a review.
