New member intro
So, I didn't see any other new member introductions on this thread, but probably I didn't scroll down far enough. I'm a major history buff, although my degree is in romance languages and my work experience is mostly finance. I've read history for pleasure since college and love discussing it. Currently I'm reading An Argument Open to All: Reading "The Federalist" in the 21st Century alongside the Federalist Papers, but am wondering if that discussion is active? I've calculated that the group should be at about #31 at this point, so I'm working to catch up.
I love books with a global perspective, and also love primary source documents. History is a mosaic - you can never see the whole thing, but I feel like the picture gets a little clearer with each book I finish.

Hello. My name is Jack and I reside in Bakersfield, California. I am currently in school studying history to eventually become a history teacher for students in secondary education. I am only in my second year of studies and have a long way to go. Since my high school years were a couple decades ago, my knowledge of history has faded. Therefore, I am striving to absorb and refresh my memory as much as possible. I love a variety of historical categories, but my favorite is American History - specifically the plight of minorities and immigrants that came to our country for a better life, but sadly suffered exploitation and oppression from the greedy, rich, Anglo-Saxon. Also, the American colonial period is another period of interest, where many triumphs and trials are witnessed in our country's evolution. I love a good story, especially a true story of the past. This is just a tid bit on why I joined this group. Thank you!

Hi,I am a long-time genealogist living outside of Boston and recently became more interested in how history is told, to expand my knowledge of history and what makes it enjoyable to read vs. what makes it drudgery. I think I'd like to teach history. Some of my history interests are: Texas, Jewish, Circus, Civil War, historiography, 19C biography, local history, and epistolary (told through correspondence or other writings) history.
Most recently, in conjunction with more than 200 other readers, I read from "Of the Monstrous Pictures of Whales," from a whaling history, in a public reading in New Bedford, Mass. (true, some of it was definitely made up history).

Hello,I'm Jeff and I live in the Washington, DC area of the United States presently. I work as a foreign service officer, and have lived overseas for extended periods.
I am very interested in broad swathes of history, both US and international. Right now I am primarily focused on Eastern Europe in the immediate post-WW1 period, where new states were taking shape in the wake of the collapse of three empires there.
Additionally I am interested in the process of German unification in the 19th century. For American history, I am interested in colonial economic development under the plantation system, as well as the later struggles against Jim Crow and segregation.
I like learning languages, and am trying to teach myself German and Polish.

Hi, I’m Kim, and I live just outside of Boston, MA. I am a programmer and environmental/health analyst. I can’t say that I know much about history (was always more of a math/science person), but I would like to learn more, especially through the reading of memoirs, autobiographies, and historical fiction. After reading “A River in Darkness: One Man's Escape from North Korea”, I wanted to learn more about the history of that region. My name is Kat and I live in NYC. Although i have been reading most of my life (36), i find that lately i have been reading more of what i call “soap opera” books, and I keep going to the same sort of places for inspiration so I only recently started using Goodreads as a way to broaden my horizons as it were.
I am very excited to join this group, from what I read this is a great assortment of folks with a huge diversity of interest so there will always plenty of interesting discussions!
My main interests in history is ancient history, medieval times, new discoveries in archeology, secrets i.e. spies, regular people lives are just a few topics off the top of my head.
I am also a huge fan of The Great Courses, I have listened to most of their history series and get a lot of book ideas from them.

Blood Royal: A True Tale of True Crime and Detection in Medieval Paris by Eric Jager. (I tried to read the thread of how to make the book pics, but every time i try the various links on how, my app crashes!) it is a book i am having a hard time putting down.
