I know what you mean. I love real History to the extent that I can't read historical fiction; I just think of the latter that it didn't really happen, whereas real history happened and can be just as juicy, romantic, adventurous, and probably crazier than anything that someone could create.

I want to tackle history with a top-down approach. So right now, I'm interested in all "relevant" history in the modern period. And then after, I'd link some of the current(ish) events back to the medival and ancient periods for insight.

I love reading about history. Some of my favorite books are Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies and Clive Ponting's A Green History of the World, although I also love historical fiction. I read Amy Tan's The Valley of Amazement not long ago. I especially like science history, and ancient civilizations, but I'm curious about everything. I hope to find some stimulating discussions here!

Hi everyone!My name is Navi. I'm joining you from British Columbia, Canada. I'm an avid reader who has recently taken the plunge to read more works of history. I look forward to interacting with you all and receiving a ton of great book recommendations :).
I am currently in the middle of reading The House of Government: A Saga of the Russian Revolution. It's a big, sprawling epic about the Russian Revolution. This is the first book I have read on the topic so it is a bit of an overwhelming read. That aside, it is so well written and captivating that I feel completely immersed in the narrative.
I'm hoping to read more books about the Soviet Union that are a bit more accessible to the general reader! I'm open to recommendations :)
Also, I love the way this group is organized!

Hi there, everyone. My name is Nathan Lambert, and I live in Lakeland, Florida USA. Before coming to FL, I lived in Illinois and was raised there. I am nineteen years old, and am currently in community college with a tentative -very much so- intended major in journalism. I love writing, reading -methinks that is obvious- and learning. Pet subjects include history and politics; however, I am interested in learning just about anything. I also like to learn new languages: I tried to learn German, but haven't been very studious about it recently. This is mostly because I have been focusing my attention on learning Brazilian Portuguese. Through this group, I hope to learn more about history and the world around me, as well as expand my knowledge of history in some of the countries I am most fascinated by like Brazil, Afghanistan, Iran, China, Japan, and all of Eastern Europe.

I'm a retired Russian linguist and an author. First studied Russian at the Defense Language Institute in 1966 and have studied and used it professionally ever since. I hope this topic (Russian and Soviet History) will take off this year since too few people understand much about the Russian Federation, not to mention the society whence it emanated -- the USSR. I do think that all Americans need to take a careful look at the USSR since that's where Vladimir Putin and his minions cut their teeth. Understand that place and much of what you hear Putin say and what you see on RT on dish TV makes perfect sense.

Hi my name is Tracy Cayler. I have lived in California all my life and am currently living in Fresno California. My father is responsible for introducing me to reading. I think I was 3 or 4 years old when I began reading Dr. Seuss. This is when I became an official "book worm." Today, I enjoy reading all types of books never really sticking to one genre. My love for history began when I was 10 years old. When my parents took my siblings and I to Tombstone Arizona. I was completely mesmerized by the acknowledgement that I was walking on the same streets as Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday. I have stood on the very ground where the Gunfight at the OK Corral occurred. Since then I have been interested in all types of history but my favorite era is the Old West, especially the Gunfighters, Lawman and Outlaws.
I am looking forward to delving into areas of history that I have not ventured into to much and discussing it with other historical enthusiasts.

Hi guys! I'm TKG from California. I recently finished grad school and can finally dive into books guilt free! I'm an engineer by profession, but a writer by passion. I'm passionate about history and especially love auto/biographies.
Some of my favorite topics: Thomas Jefferson, Ancient Italy, Japanese history and literature, WWII, English/Scottish/Irish history, and the Renaissance. I read a lot about the lives of dead writers and poets. Kafka is a favorite writer of mine.
It's wonderful to be part of a community that also cherishes history and likes to discuss topics of long past!
Welcome, TKG. I lived and worked for 30 years in Monterey at the Defense Language Institute (teaching Russian) before retiring and leaving the state. I would encourage you and all folks interested in history to read as much as you can about Russian/Soviet history since that's the only way to develop an understanding about what the Russian Federation is up to these days.

It is very interesting to get to stand and walk on the sites where history has occurred, although I haven't done it as much as I would like to.

But it's definitely a country I want to learn more about! I plan to someday travel to it as well so understanding it culturally and historically is paramount.

I hope you'll study Russian and Soviet history because there is a misconception that the USSR is a "dead issue" and no longer relevant to today's Russian Federation. Just tune into RT television. I recently watched a few days of their coverage of world events and, had it been in Russian instead of English, I could have closed my eyes and would likely not been able to find much substantive difference between these broadcasts and those of Radio Moscow back in Brezhnev's time.TKG wrote: "Charles wrote: "Welcome, TKG. I'm 81 years old but don't feel it probably because the way that the British National Health system has looked after my health. Married, five children and a growing number of grandchildren. My wife and I live in the Village of Steventon, Oxfordshire, England when she was born. It was a small village when I moved here in 1960 but is slowly being smothered by speculative property speculators and I would love to move somewhere such as Somerset which is much quieter but the attraction of children and grandchildren is to strong for my wife to resist.
Born in Brighton Sussex the family moved to London just before the Second world War started and my younger sister and I were evacuated for three or four years being reclaimed by our parents who had moved to Oxford. With such a start its no surprise that I left school aged 15 with no qualifications and became an Apprentice Bricklayer which I did not enjoy as I worked for a large building firm and it was like being on mass production whilst my brother apprentices worked for small quality Oxford firms.
I finished my five year apprenticeship and in those days England had national Military service which I was happy to join especially as it took me to places such as Hong Kong. I even spent a short while with the American Army in Korea.
I served my contract with the Army and had a number of jobs before obtaining employed in a Car Assembly plant where I stayed for 12 years becoming involved in the Trade Union movement. By that time I decided that I needed and education but had little confidence and then the Government of the day, Harold Wilson's Labour Government created the "Open University" which was based on what I would refer to as, "Open or Distant Learning" and it was staffed by superb teachers who were sympathetic and more importantly it was supported with Government grants which opened the world of university education to all.
I spent four years with the O.U. and enjoyed it so much that I applied for a place at Balliol College Oxford where I spent another two years and left totally unemployable which was not a surprise with my background but I found my way into what was then referred to as, Industrial Relations Management. It was based on the idea that people with my background would understand how the shop floor workers thought which was a bit of a nonsense. I worked in an Aluminon Foil printing plant which closed as it was replaced by polythene film and I moved into a London Local Authority Human Relations department before I was recruited by a National Newspaper prior to the industry moving into computerised production. It was a fascinating job.
I then made the mistake of joining an American company that changed its structure as often as men change their socks and at the age of 57 I was made redundant one does not get another job in HR at that age.
For the last few years I have been corresponding with a friend I worked with in the Aluminium industry who started sending me his views on matters such as the state of British Politics, his views on President Trump etc etc. His most recent rant started by mentioning the relationship between the Tory Winston Churchill and Labour Clement Attlee during the Second World War and although I had views on both I realised as I wrote an answer to him that I knew little about either leader. That's when I discovered that history has treated both men with unrestrained restraint in their analysis which I could not accept. Therefore the primary purpose of joining this forum was to seek both sides of their history.

Hello! My name is Anjelica. I'm from the US, currently living and working as an entertainment journalist in New York City. I joined this group because history was always my favorite subject in school and generally to read about. I graduated with my bachelor's degree three years ago, but I'm planning on pursuing a graduate degree and have decided that history is what I want to pursue in my future. I don't know if this is the right place but, hello this is Camille. The Decline of the West I just started reading "The Decline of the West" Abridged Version, by: Oswald Spengler. Its hurting my head. I'm only in the introduction, but although I enjoy his writing, I'm mostly at a loss, especially since I don't have a good grasp of ancient history. Anyway, was wondering if any of you guys and gals have read this and have some pointers on how to get through this dense book. Thanks and happy reading!
