I live in Aiken, SC. I am an online high school history teacher. I have a BA in History and Photojournalism. I love reading and try and read a history book a month that I can somehow work into discussions with my students. This month I started reading,One Man Against the World: Tragedy of Richard Nixon, Tim Weiner and thought I would try an online book discussion. I am also interested in how education is changing with the internet and online discussions and open learning. Who knows maybe this is a method I can use in the classroom to encourage my students to read.

I've Eva and I live in Indiana. I'm fascinated with American history, and I go through different phases in terms of time periods. I have read a lot on World War 2 and later, but right now I'm enthralled with Reconstruction history (late 1800s). I'm looking forward to the discussions here! I live in central NJ, in the U.S.A. I am an intense, introverted, Catholic father of two sons who are students at Rutgers University. I am employed in IT for a major financial institution.

The last time I formally studied history was when I was a junior in high school in 1972. Four years ago, my youngest son, then a high school junior, was given a history class assignment to write a research paper on the cause of World War II. I bought or borrowed a number of books on the subject for my son to use. I read more of them than he did, and I discovered that World War I and the treaty of Versailles was much more interesting and significant than World War II. I also became fascinated by the Weimar republic and subsequently read, Weimar Culture, by Peter Gay.

At a book sale at my local public library, I ran across the book, What God Hath Wrought, subtitled, The Transformation of America, 1815-1848, by Daniel Walker Howe. My initial
thought was, "How boring? Nothing interesting happened 1815-1848." But the cover said that it had won the Pulitzer Prize for history, and so I bought it figuring there must be something interesting in it. Once I started it, I found it utterly fascinating. This book is the one gave me the history bug! One of the reviews on Amazon said that this was the best history book ever written! I intend to read the entire Oxford History of the United States.

Since then I have read, John Adams, by David McCullough. I am currently reading, The Reformation by Will Durant. I have several history books on my book shelf and Kindle, waiting to be read.

I am also particularly interested in the Revolutionary War period, especially since the
Continental Army and militias traveled through and were quartered in the area where I grew up--Suffern, NY, which borders NJ, where I live now. Joined to that, I am keenly interested in the local history concerning the Ramapo Mountains and the Ramapough Indians (Munsee tribe).

As well, I'd like to read something of the history of Islamic civilization. I also love history of philosophy, as well as biographies of important musicians and writers. I'm also very interested in human evolution (paleolithic man), pre-Colombian settlements in North America, and the history of Cambodia.

Apart from history, I love early American literature--Washington Irving, James Fenimore Cooper, Edgar Allen Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Herman Melville.

This is Anindya. Spelt as Awe-nin-doe. I am from Bangalore, India. History wasn't my favorite topic in school as we were expected to learn dates. However, I liked the stories that I read in my History textbook. Career drove me to other interests and by profession I am a market researcher, dabbling with media planning. Wanted to revisit History after a long time and picked up Glimpses of World History by Jawaharlal Nehru. This book has been on my wishlist for a long time. Have also read Fermat's Last Theorem where I got to read about the history of Mathematics, another of my favorite subjects. Was going through the other introductions and am happy to see so many like-minded people here. Here to learn more from each of you and to explore opportunity to discuss the book that I am reading currently. Reading a book when complemented with discussion, helps develop perspective that is well-rounded. That's what I believe.
