Hi, my name is John. I live in Oregon. Although I read fantasy and sci-fi on occasion, my real passion is history. My mother was always a reader and helped instill a love of reading that has lasted all my life. I recall that my parents had some hardcover American Heritage books that I used to devour regularly. The ones that particularly intrigued me were the WWII book and the Great West, which was written by one of my favorites, David Lavender. My interests only branched out from there.

WWII is probably my favorite topic of them all. My father was in the Navy during the war and worked on all sorts of carrier aircraft. He told me many stories of his experiences. As a result, I favor the Pacific theater of the war, although I do love to read about all theaters. I also greatly enjoy early American history and the settling of the West, the Civil War and medieval and early English history especially the Anglo-Saxon through Tudor period. More recently I have developed an interest in WWI and hope to expand my knowledge of this conflict.

I'm looking forward to learning new things and getting to know people in this group.

My name is Paulo, I'm a Brazilian military, which makes me interested in military history because I pretty sure that most of time reading and studying what happened in the past allow us to fill the gaps created by the lack of experience today. I use to read military and political leaders biographies, WWII, Vietnam War, Falklands War, Air Power and Leadership books. Nowadays I'm interested in Otoman Empire history as well, so, in case any of you have a good book on this as a recommendation I will appreciate. Besides that I enjoy Brazil's History. I live in Brazil but lived in Britain in 2013 and 2014 when I did a Master Degree in the Kings College London. I have a 2016 Challenge of reading 6 books this year and I think I'm on my way as I've already read 4. Hi.. My name is Mahak Puri from Bangalore, India. I have a strong inclination for this genre as I feel it has the capability to answer a lot of questions about the present. You can never be oblivious to the past and yet think of a bright future. With all the unrest all over the world, it's important to go back in time and realize where and how things came into existence. Everyone seems to have a lot of complaints from their present and that is giving rise to the imbalance we see in this world today. One can fully embrace present only when you thoroughly understand your past.

Hi everyone! I'm Bugsy from the Philippines. I am 23 years old and I have a Bachelor's Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies (IS) with concentrations in Economics and Development Studies. As an IS major, I have a wide array of interests, which I nurture through reading books. These interests fall mostly under the categories of History, Economics, Politics, Government, and Development - as you may observe in the books that I've read and want to read (Excluding most of the fictional books as they're required readings back when I was still a student). I have always been fascinated in learning about how the world "works," as well as how past events/people have influenced the current state of the world.

However, unlike most of you (I'm assuming), I only started appreciating the value of books in the latter part of my college life. I hope this doesn't hinder me from catching up with the knowledge and wisdom all of you have in the discussions of the group.

Hello. I'm Dean Robertson and I'm excited to be here. I am a 70-year-old retired English teacher who was presented 15 months ago with her first, and almost certainly only grandson. I've turned into one of those grandmothers, sending photos to everyone I know. I spend my time writing and editing and grand-mothering, busier in retirement than when I was teaching full-time. I miss my students but love being able to set my own schedule. I live with one 12-year-old cat, Isaac, and have a remarkable group of friends. I read and read and read. Most recently I've reread Barbara Tuckman's A Distant Mirror which is good as it was 30 years ago when I was prepping to teach Canterbury Tales for the first time. I'm looking forward to this.

Hello! I'm Karolina, 20 year old girl from Poland. I'm currently taking a gap year, because I have to pass an advanced history exam which is obligatory for me if I want to study East European Studies at university. That's why I'll be preparing for it this year. I like almost everything about history, however my object of interest revolves around modern and contemporary period, especially XX century and East European countries. Recently, I've became interested even more in communist Poland aka PRL, because this part of our history is quite neglected in Polish schools, mostly because of lack of time in the end of the year as chronology usually matters. What's more I find it quite interesting, how it worked, how it's still loud and controversial today, unclear and how people still recall their memories of personal experiences (like my grandparents and parents).

(Or I'm just interested in regimes just by the way...)

Hello, History Book Club, I'm Genia, and I'm an addict.

Actually, I am a master's student in psycholinguistics, but I encounter history all over the place, including in language courses. I also have a minor Barbara Tuchman addiction, to add to my other historical problems.

I don't so much 'like' history as 'get beaten over the head with it' in the best abusive mrelationship style. Which means I read eclectically, though I have a vested interest in political history and military history, and Jewish History basicallly just walked into my house and refuses to get out.

Hey everyone! My name is Julie and I'm an English Literature and History double major going into my junior year of college in Pittsburgh, PA. My favorite area of history is The War of the Roses/Tudor era. I also am interested in anything to do with royalty, especially European monarchies like England. Though royalty is my all-around favorite historical subject, I am very interested in WWII and medieval and ancient history. That being said, I haven't read many whole books on these subjects. I do have about two history classes a semester, but so far they have been more broad. However, this semester I am taking a course on modern British history. I would love to hear recommendations from anyone just please no Phillipa Gregory haha! I'm looking forward to learning a lot. Thanks for reading!
