Edit: Added the book to goodreads: Love Has Two Faces now.
Tempt Me Twice (2001) by Barbara Dawson Smith seems too recent. I'll mention it because of an Amazon reviewer's comments about the hero: "...Lord Gabriel "Gabe" Kenyon, who was sponsoring her father's (Professor Henry Talisford) trip into the deep wilds of Africa in search of a lost city..."
Mattson is still looking for this and wrote:
"- presumably written during 80s/90s.
-Setting: British colonies, not sure where but I would guess somethere in africa. Lots of jungle scenes.
- our heroine: dark haired, british, upper class.
- Our hero: blonde, an explorer, has his own boat (haha), (His adoptive dark skinned brother is from an local tribe.
- The book pretty much begins with a funeral in a warm country. The father of our heroine has passed away. He was some kind of treasure hunter/archeologist. She has travelled from england for his funeral. Turns out he was looking for a lost city/hidden treasure (and he had procured The Map.) She decides to continue his search but in order to do so she needs help. She goes to our hero on his boat to ask for help but he refuses.
(Spoiler alert)
Fast forward a while... She finds someone to help her (want to say his name is Nigel, but not sure.) and they start travelling up river. but things dont go according to plan. Our hero joins the group, but for starters he and the heroine are Not friendly towards each other.
If im not mistaken she and this nigel person are kind of held hostages for starters. But of course our hero and heroine cant keep their hands of each other and tent sex happens.
Nigel turns out to be a (racist) douche, our hero and heroine finds the treasure (involves swimming in some sort of under water tunnel), there's a fight and a fire but all's well that ends well.
What on earth is the name of this book?!"

Mai suggested Heart of Fire which Mattson says is not the right book
"Oh, that was soo close!
It sounds really similar, but im sure that the book im thinking of is an historical romance, not a contemporary. I remember the heroine thinking about wether or not to use a corset in the heat..
If im not mistaken, it takes place in the later part of the 1800s. They had steam boats or some of that sort."

The main character, a young british woman, is in the beginning of the book pretty timid and uptight. her father is an explorer/anthrolopogist and he´s spent years searching for clues to help find a lost city/treasure. The book begins with him finding a map that will lead him there, but he ends up dying before he has a chance to act on it. Our main character then decides that she will fulfill her fathers lifelong dream om finding this city/treasure, and turns to an (hot) american(?) adventurer for help. He's pretty unwilling, and I think he refuses her to begin with. So she turns to a british young "gentleman" who knew her father. Turns out he´s not really a gentleman at all, and our "hero", who´s been following them comes to her rescue, but to begin with he just want to find the lost city/treasure for himself.(And for his bloodbrother who is a native.)
Oh, and this is a pretty old book. Pretty sure it was pub. Sometime before the 90s.
Heeelp me!
