Thanks so much for the Canadian angle, Scott. And for your comment too, Peter. Fracking companies in Europe are funded by faceless international hedge funds only interested in profits... all the money will go offshore and non of it will benefit the locals. And they are prepared to exploit some of the most beautiful landscapes...places designated as national parks or places of outstanding beauty. But the country where the issue is really interesting is in Romania where its tied in with nationalism - people of all ages - the young and the old are incensed that foreign companies want to exploit their land.

Emma Jaye | 3693 comments I live about 10 miles from the village of Balcombe, which has been the centre of the fracking controversy in the UK recently. As far as the ins and outs of the debate goes, I'm not informed enough to make a decision. however our local taxes have gone up to pay for the police operation needed to keep the peace between the protesters and the workers.

Scott Spotson (scottspotson) In Canada, we have a Quebec provincial election that has the vote this Monday. One of the hot election issues is the provincial government clearing the way for fracking on Anticosti Island. Some parties support it, some oppose it. Since the government currently in power has traditionally supported the environment (more as a mainstream party, not as an environmental party) some are angry at the government for approving it, especially when it was done pretty much in secret.

We're practically neighbours then... I live in Hampshire the county next door to West Sussex and the rolling hills of the South Downs National Park is on my doorstep.

No wonder it's a hot topic on Anticosti Island... I just looked it up... Sean, the other half of LN spent four years as a grad student in Montreal and developed his love of the great outdoors in some of your spectacular Canadian wilderness...

Scott Spotson (scottspotson) Hi, my review of "Fractured: Revolution Earth" is up now.

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

We had a lot of fascinating discussions on the fracking issues worldwide recently, but the timing had nothing to do with my review of the book. It was my Round Two review anyway, and I was reading it when the discussions came up.

Thanks, you sure have the right guy when it comes to environmental issues and our concern for such.

Thanks so much Scott. It's a multi-media project this one as we're currently working with a director on a short film version - hence the brevity.

Thank you Ronin - much appreciated. Please bear in mind the main subject is based around social services departments, (in USA child protection) governed by governments within the UK. NHS (National Health Service) is a completely separate organisation which health care delivered at no cost for anyone seeking any medical or clinical intervention, including mental health. Hopefully this makes things clearer about the different services available to keep the story in the right context.

Cheers,
FS

Terribly slow this time. I've only been on short-haul flights! ;)

Emma Jaye | 3693 comments Tsk tsk definitely slacking Brenda, you're only about 7 weeks ahead of schedule this time.

If anyone does get overly bored, I've been let down by a reviewer in the first group I joined (group 26) I've got a contemporary erotic novella out that could use some love. Let me know if anyone's interested, via my goodreads page.

It's been brilliant - I've really enjoyed it. Thank you so much Emma for moderating. This review group on Goodreads has been a real find. I was on Authonomy for a while and tired very quickly of all the sycophantic mutual reviewing that goes on there...

Emma Jaye | 3693 comments I haven't found that site, but if anything, I think authors can be harder on each other than other readers. Because it is our craft, we tend to pick up on grammar and punctuation errors 'normal' readers may or may not bypass. In my opinion we tend to provide 'critiques' rather than reviews.

I agree with that, Emma, thankfully readers are more likely if they review to tell you what they did like and leave negatives as questions. I'm rewriting where I can, but the stories remain.

Yes I think you are right about that Emma. So I was delighted to be able to give a five star review to one of the books I read in this round. I could see how much craft had gone into it...

Best,
Alison

Lee - thank you for your review. I have found this most useful, and teamed with the other reviews received so far is helping me to write the next book that follows this one.

I'll certainly keep you updated. It was an automated rejection (I got the notice within a few minutes), so I expect it'll be checked up on tomorrow sometime, during real business hours. This has actually happened to me once before, and the rejection was reversed. Since I can't see how any of it violates the rules, this one probably will be, too.

message 135: by Lee (new)

Lee French | 32 comments As expected, Amazon reversed the rejection. The review is exactly the same, and it's here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1765YJP...

Still hasn't been posted on the UK site, but I expect that's just a matter of time.

Thanks Scott, very useful feedback. You are right, he is more of a witness to events than a maker and shaker, hence the passive nature of his character. I wouldn't change him for the world, but I would like to bear that in mind for future work.

Gurl-Posse Kidnap (Sonoma Knight PI, #2) by Peter Prasad

Loved the read. Characters leap off the pages. Escapist modern beach read, complete with a scoop of the paranormal. Five-star thriller, with blood-chilling villains that make Iago seem tame. This is a very exciting tale, written in superb style with real panache. Reminds me how surprising novels can be. Prasad is a writer like no other. His inventive turns of phrase give this book its wit, irony, warmth and humor.

message 148: by Scott (new)

Scott Spotson (scottspotson) Hey I like your ideas Peter! Cool! Something like a Socratic debate in this story! I do have some 19th century American history with Secretaries of War under Presidents Lincoln and Jefferson in a debate in there.... but would be exciting to go back to the days of the Greek Gods! Thanks!

message 149: by Scott (new)

Scott Spotson (scottspotson) Posted to Amazon Canada too? Wow! My home country! I don't think I even have one review there for any of my five books... thanks for being so thoughtful.

message 150: by Peter (new)

Peter Prasad (goodreadscompeter_prasad) | 50 comments Explore Socrates benevolent dictator concept. Read Jess Money's Public Enemies. Read my Campaign Zen. Many ways to advance civilization by telling stories. Four Kings might do with a better analysis of world governance too, but explore it in story form with characters that grow.
