young boy who loves horses is captured by indians and eventually assimilates and becomes one of them. he likes this girl who is attacked by a bear and when he is finally rescued (?or leaves) he tells her he will come back for her. there is a second book that has to do with him being the pony express.
i read it when i was in elementary school between 1999-2004 ish and i think it was published in the 90s or 80s though that is just a rough guess.
