Wendi Wilson | 81 comments Hello all! I was just looking at my book on Amazon and I noticed that it had 5 sellers, as low as $8 and some change. I listed my price at $11.99 through CreateSpace, and the top seller, Amazon.com is selling it for $9.59 (with the $11.99 crossed out). What's going on? Has anyone had any experience with this?
Also, how are 4 other sellers offering my paperback? I gave one away in a GR giveaway, and only 1 was ordered through Createspace. Other than one I gave to my MIL, who can't use a computer, much less be a seller on Amazon, those are the only 2 copies out in the world. So how are 4 people selling it at a discount? I'm so confused. TIA for any insight.

Joe Jackson (shoelessauthor) Are the discounted ones being sold and shipped from the UK? I think with the conversion rate they can make a couple pounds buying it there and selling it to US customers. That's what I've seen with my own, anyway: the below-Createspace prices are sold/shipped from the UK.

Amazon often discounts paperbacks to align with other markets, but you still get the full royalty so it doesn't matter. Other sellers listing your book don't actually have it, but will order it if it sells. Nothing to worry about.

What Ken said. :)

April Wilson (aprilwilson) Hi, Wendi

That does all seem weird, but I agree with the others. I don't think it's anything you need to worry about.

How do you like your paperback from CreateSpace? I ordered my proofs yesterday, and I'll get them on Wednesday. Did the quality meet your expectations? The whole print-on-demand process seems miraculous to me, assuming the quality is good.

Edward Odson | 19 comments Yeah April, seems miraculous to me too. I'm very happy with the quality of the final copies of my book I've ordered from CreateSpace. My price for ordering copies is extremely reasonable too.

Wendi Wilson | 81 comments I love them! Though I didn't do all the work you did, reformatting, so I think yours will be awesome!

April Wilson (aprilwilson) Wendi, if you want me to format your book differently for print, I'd be happy to do it. I want some books to practice on, because I might start doing book formatting on the side. :) I'd be happy to do yours (or anyone who's interested) for free. I'd like to format a few people's books for print to find out the feasibility of doing that on a serious basis.

I know how to do the actual formatting (that's the easy part), but I wonder how involved the communication and back-and-forth would be between me and the author -- that's what I want to test.

This is an awesome idea. I know I hadn't planned on using Create Space when mine is finished. I'm still in the researching and planning phase; by the time it's finished you'll be long past needing practise. I hope. (I plan to ship next year, but I'm going slower than anticipated.)

April Wilson (aprilwilson) Hi, Grace

I recently bought Adobe InDesign, which is professional digital design and layout software for formatting books (among other things), so I could format my first novel for print. I used this software YEARS ago when I did layout and design work for newspapers and magazines, so it all came back to me pretty quickly, and I remember why I LOVE doing desktop publishing. I'm thinking I might like to keep my hands busy doing some book formatting for print in the future, maybe doing one or two books a month. It will bring in a little extra money, which I can then use to pay for professional artists to design my future covers. :)

You should plan on using CreateSpace (or something like it) so you can offer print copies of your book in the future. It was such an easy process, and I have heard great things about the quality of their output.

April

I agree on CreateSpace. Easy, free (though there are pricing options for cover creation and the like), and a fairly seamless, painless process. I've sold more Kindles than paperbacks, but having that option thanks to CreateSpace is a godsend.

Scott Scheller | 10 comments Hi, April, et al.
My paperback from Createspace was superb. Their turnaround time is great, too. I just ordered 30 copies for myself to take to a book fair tomorrow and they arrived in days.

Wow, I'm so glad to hear that! I have three proof copies coming in the mail Wednesday, and I feel like a little kid at Christmas! I am going to buy some copies and see if I can donate them to my local library system and see if I can sell them (maybe on consignment) to my local bookstores. But honestly, most of all I'm just excited about holding a copy of it in my hands. :) And their author price is very affordable.

Holding a physical copy in your hand is definitely one of the most exciting aspects of being an author. The first time I held a copy of my book in my hand, that's when it finally hit home to me that I was a published author.

Libby, you're recommending the matte covers? I've heard others recommend the glossy covers. I went with a glossy cover. I hope I don't regret that.

Dorothy Bennett (alysblugwn) | 48 comments I just published my first book, and I went through Outskirts Press. They were very professional and offered all kinds of marketing advice, including joining Goodreads and doing Giveaways. But it was expensive for me, and the next time around I'll be looking to cut corners now that I have an idea what it's all about. Thanks for the info about Create Space. I'll definitely look into that one.

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 790 comments I've noticed that when someone buys your book at full price, it then drops a bit lower but this is perhaps so that it draws people in to make them think they are getting a deal. As Ken stated above, you still get the full royalties it's just a way for Amazon to keep up with similar books in that genre and to get readers good deals.

message 21: by Kenneth (new)

Kenneth Decroo (kennethdecroo) | 4 comments I had a very good experience with Outskirts Press. I agree, the first time you crack open your newly publish book is special like first love. I will probably go with Outskirts again. I feel they earned their money.

Dorothy Bennett (alysblugwn) | 48 comments I really respect Outskirts Press, too. My book is absolutely perfect. And I am really happy about all the extras to do with marketing. I just wish I had the money to afford to buy all the packages they offer, but I don't. But they are certainly a good and professional outfit.
