SOLVED. Name of (YA?) Horror Book with Talking Tree and Mom w/ Cancer [s]

It's a horror book, and I think it's young adult. I remember that the main character was a boy and I think he may have been British but don't count on that. His mom was dying of cancer, and his only escape from his distraught reality was a big tree outside his window that talked to him at night. Then some weird crazy and philosophical stuff happened, and at the end there was a major plot twist but I can't remember it. :/
