I think Fergus is actually related to the french doctor guy that helped Claire in Dragonfly in Amber - since it was hinted that he was a time traveler
Oh, I never thought about that! I was thinking that Fergus was Claire's ancestor, but I didn't put the french doctor guy with a Fergus connection.
French doctor guy in dragonfly in amber? I remember the guy who hanged people...him? But I don't remember any hints that he was a time traveler. Do I have the wrong person?
no, the doctor guy that worked his voodoo on claire after she had the miscarriage - I'm blanking on his name though
Oohhh Raymond the apothecary guy. I'm not sure if he was a Frenchmen? I know he spoke French....But yeah I think he's one of their ancestors too but a very old one.
I'm thinking the child the Comte went back in time to create was Fergus, leaving them all Claire's ancestors.
So many questions... It can't be the unborn child in this story is Fergus. He is already born and living in NC. I do think that Fergus could be Claire's ancestor though. ??

I think that the unborn child in this story isn't Fergus (because he would be in his 40's), but that the reference to the Comte having done this before did create Fergus in a previous time. Joan is 25 in the story, and she is Marsali's younger sister. Marsali was 15 and Fergus 30 when they met and wed, so Fergus is now 40+. The Comte muses about whether or not he has committed incest with his daughter, but figures from the timing it could be a granddaughter. The prostitute in this story is 18, so a child conceived 40 or so years before that works out.

Sorry. I think the Comte did create Fergus 40 years ago, but that the child he is creating in the story is another child. The Comte would have to take the child or his mother back in time to have Fergus grow up in the correct time. I think the point is that the Comte has done this more than once.
Well, these are just my theories. Time travel in these books is a genetic ability. Claire's child and grandchildren can go through the stones. Roger and all of his ancestors can do this as well. Both Raymond and the Comte are known time travelers.
Someone did visit Fergus in America claiming that Fergus was the son of the Comte. I don't think Fergus believed him.
Claire's maiden name (Beauchamp) is French, but I don't think she knows much about her ancestors. So, she could be related to the Comte, a known time traveler (and procreator) in France.
So, if Fergus is the Comte's son, and the Comte is Claire's ancestor (perhaps through the baby conceived in the story), then Fergus and Claire are related. I don't think Fergus is Claire's direct ancestor though, because that would mean one of Fergus's children would have to have moved back to France at some point.
Again, just my probably crazy ideas, but fun to try and see how the various characters could fit together.

Thanks! I forgot about Percy Wainwright Beauchamp claiming Fergus is the son of the Comte.
I was very confused reading this book...had to reread several chapters...I agree on all these theories except where I hit the wall is roger....he is a McKenzie... if time travel is genetic where does he get it from? I know Galies his ancestor so maybe Gaelis Duncan is also a product of Raymond or Conte ?? Thinking she might be the long lost daughter of Raymond that Conte spoke about
Angie wrote: "I was very confused reading this book...had to reread several chapters...I agree on all these theories except where I hit the wall is roger....he is a McKenzie... if time travel is genetic where do..."I always thought Clare was the long lost daughter. I can't wait to find out all these answers.
