Salem shrugged again, leaning into him. "Their names are pretty much all I know. Waverley," -she pointed to the younger one-" and Connie."
Waverley started to cry, her face now tracked with lines of salty tears. "No Connie! You can't leave me yet!"

Waverley didn't acknowledge that she'd heard Emmy, she just kept hugging Connie and crying silent sobs that shook her body.

Teeghan smiled. She was so happy to be in a positive environment with everyone she loved. She was even starting to really like Waverley and Connie. Might as well enjoy it while it lasts. Everything could change in a split second...

Emmy looked at the crying girls and moved next to Patrik. She wasn't good with crying.

Waverley looked up at him through her tears and spoke in broken whispers, "Connie...Connie's sick...she's- she's dyin'!"
"Dying?" Patrik questioned"How'd she get hurt?" Emmy asked reflexively
Waverley shook her head. "I don't know!" she cried out, "But she knew it would happen when we came...she said-she said I'd be okay..."
Patrik spoke in soothing tones"You are ok." he didn't want to say that Connie would be alright, because she probably wouldn't be and he didn't want to lie to the girl.
Waverley nodded. "But it hurts! So bad, it hurts..it's bad. Bad bad."
Patrik kept his calm tone"Maybe I could help her take some pain away?"
Waverley shook, her muscles tensing and untensing. She groaned and tightened her grip on Connie as if she were a lifeline.

"Waverly. You have to." Emmy said firmly, there was no room for compromise in her tone.
If you have to, just take her off. Her thoughts are pretty scrambled right now. She's not going to let go. Salem 'said' to Emmy and Patrik.
Fine Emmy growled both in reality and in her head. Eyes flashing silver in annoyance."Emmy" Patrik said softly
Emmy ignored him and grasped Waverly by the middle and picked her up.
Waverley wriggled and tried to get down. "Noooo!"Salem grimaced.
Emmy ignored Waverly too, hoping her rising anger would be enough to blot out Connie's pain.
Waverley stopped kicking, fear now the dominant emotion on her face. "Miss Emmy!" she gasped. "Are you mad at me?"
"No. Just angry in general." Emmy said, the temperature in the room rising."Jesus Emmy." Patrik maoned
"Yeah, because this is my fault." Emmy growled at him
"Well, yeah it is!" Patrik said tiredly
Waverley twisted to face Emmy, putting a clammy hand on her cheek and making Emmy look her in the eyes. "Well, you don't haveta be. We're havin' pancakes."She was so serious that Salem had to smile.
Emmy, like Salem, had to laugh. Apparently her ever volitile anger wasn't impervious to this child's funny charm.Patrik sighed inaudibly, immediately relaxing.
Waverley glanced at Patrik severely. "We are havin' pancakes....right?"Salem coughed to cover her laugh at Patrik's expense.
Patrik, who looked equally serious, replied"Of course we are."
