VampAmber | 622 comments I'm a wee bit OCD about the Dusty Bookshelf challenges, and I refuse to start reading my picks until the month starts. But that means the last day or two of each month kills me dead, because I want so badly to start on my new books naow. Please tell me I'm not the only one?

You're not. I'm the exact same way. I use the time to do re-reads of the books I've already read for the series that got picked for me in the Finish What You Started Series challenge. It works for passing the time.

you are so patient. I find that I stress my kids out when I try to teach them. they are always tense and stuff.

Plus today's math is confusing to me. that's not how I learned. we had to memorize the multiplications table so i would just sing it in my head until I got to the answer. Now they work it out long hand

Right now, we're only working on first grade math, so it is not that difficult to teach. My husband takes point on it, as he and my son both have ADD and hubby understands how it works more than I do and can help redirect boyo better.

Common Core Math is confusing to me too, but if we homeschool, we may not have to do that route. Hubby and I are still discussing things.

I never have issues about waiting until the new month to start reading because I am always trying to finish out the prior month. LMAO!

message 208: by PepperP0t (new)

PepperP0t The minute I put it a group of books to be chosen, I want to read those books immediately and the others bore me. So I came up with a couple of ways to trick myself. (Yes, just like a puppy trick they work for me every time.)

1) Choose a dusty book that didn't get chosen and read that, or;
2) Save the last book of a couple of series and read one of those, or;
3) Choose double the amount of dusty books to post and read some of those at the end of the month, or;
4) Go to a comfort or fallback series.

I also make my own challenge each month for my dusties:
Urban Fantasy (3)
Paranormal Romance (3)
Regency Romance (2)
New Release (2)
Romantic Suspense (2)
YA (1)
+400 Pages (2)
Other (5) - includes all other genres I read, erotica, fantasy, sci-fi, mystery, etc.
OR 1 series with 5 or more books

This way I get rid of dusty books and dusty series and have room to get more books to make dusty.

That! That's it exactly. I think maybe if I try number 1, that might help. Thankfully, I won't have to do it this month though, because it'll be midnight in less than seven hours. It's so good to know I'm not the only one. ^_^

Elizabeth | 489 comments reading Burial Ground by Michael McBride Burial Groundand I'm 164 pages in and I'm loving it. first time I've read anything by this author and all I can keep think is that I'm so glade that Minerva picked it for me to read , another thing that keeps coming up in my thoughts is that it kind of reminds me of the writing style of Michael Crichton and if you love his books like I do then you might like this one. can't wait to see what happens next, going to go lay down now, its 2:07 am where I live.Good night everyone or good morning .

You are too funny but I have done the same thing on occasion. Esp if the book I'm supposed to wait to read ends up working for a team challenge - then I have a problem. One time I put the wrong # in the series in my list and I had already read it - oops. Luckily my picker was fine with me going with the next in the series.

It is, its more thriller and suspense than anything and its keeping me on the edge of my set while I'm reading it.its like I'm reading something that Michael Crichton would have written.

Elizabeth | 489 comments just finished Burial Ground by Michael McBride Burial GroundOMG what can I say about it , I loved it , and I'm definitely picking it up again to read, if you love Michael Crichton's book Congo or any of his work then you'll like this one by Michael McBride or at lest I think so. my cope even has a free bonus novella: Xibalba which is also five out of five stars. So go check it out. This story kept me coming back for more and had me on the edge of my bed the entire time I was reading it, going to have to get it in paperback so I can have 2 copies of it.once again thinks for this great pick Minerva.loved it 5 stars

Elizabeth | 489 comments Just finished Blood Seancegive it 3 stars, its an ok read not something I would consider as a horror story.

message 219: by Skandia (new)

Skandia (sfgirl) | 435 comments Finished Overruled (The Legal Briefs, #1) by Emma Chase . 3 stars.
Well written but the main character was a giant ass.

Kay (Brigidsmomma) Compton (brigidsmomma) | 565 comments Finished my first pick from the DB challenge for October... Murder For Neptune's Trident...A Citrus Beach Mystery (Citrus Beach Mysteries) by Victoria L.K. Williams . I liked it so much that I've gone ahead and read book 2 in the series and am halfway thru book 3! Definitely 5 stars in my book! Lots of action and lots of drama, and a good storyline with great characters... what's not to like?

Thanks for the great picks.

Not a Word Oct 4 ★★★★★ super cute, slow burn love story

Rogue Oct 3 ★★★★ There were only a few reviews for this book and they were not favorable, so I wasn't expecting much. I enjoyed this book, and may feel compelled to actually write a review myself. The biggest complaint in the reviews I read was that the MC was not likeable. I was happy for the advance warning. I'm pretty sure though the writer absolutely intended the MC to be a very unlikeable guy and did a good job with it. Regardless, I liked the mystery.

Penumbra | 486 comments Finished Secrets by Grace R. Duncan -- light, quick read, just what I was looking for. I gave it 4 Stars

Kay (Brigidsmomma) Compton (brigidsmomma) | 565 comments Finished Blood and Justice (Jake and Annie Lincoln, #1) by Rayven T. Hill . This one is the first of a series, and is a bit more hardcore than my tastes run to. About a husband and wife PI team, and their efforts to track what turns out to be a serial killer. Marla, this one is right up your alley... over 2000 reviews on Amazon and available in print as well as ebook format... I'd give it 4 stars only because I prefer something a bit tamer...

how does Grayson's vow rank against ARcher's Voice and Leo?

Kari | 633 comments Ezinwanyi~the Impish Angel wrote: "how does Grayson's vow rank against ARcher's Voice and Leo?..."

Uhm, they're different, Grayson's Vow is less NA-ish. The hero is a bit of an a$$, but it worked out ok because her heroes are usually sweet-borderline-perfect and it was good to read something different. The heroine was fabulous and funny. There's less angst and gratuitous drama compared to her other books. The villains were just meh, kinda cartoonish. The actual writing was great and there's a romantic, modern fairy-tale vibe to it. :)

Thanks, Kay, I did add it to my tbr list. Now, if it was as easy to take things off that list as to add them, I might finish my tbr in my lifetime.

VampAmber | 622 comments Just finished my first pick, Bad Girls Don't Die (Bad Girls Don't Die, #1) by Katie Alender , and I adored it. Five stars all the way. There's two more books in the series, too (I didn't even know it was a series until the other day), and now I can't wait to read them. On my to-request list on my library's website already. Man, have I been obsessively reading YA books lately. Probably cuz most of the YA fiction wasn't very good when I was a YA. ^_^

Snowtulip Debbie G, just finished True North, it was a straightforward, easy going romance book :) Thanks for the pick!

I'll be starting my next pick soon :D

message 234: by Clare (new)

Clare (-clare-) Playing a Part Finished my first pick. I'm not sure if something got lost in translation with this book or if the Russian laws prohibiting gay propaganda made the characters so weak. It's getting a 2* rating from me. Nevertheless it was a quick read that did exactly what I wanted it to in terms of crossing Russia off my list of countries visited via books this year.

message 235: by Minerva (new)

Minerva (minervaclaire) Widdershins (Whyborne & Griffin, #1) by Jordan L. Hawk 4 Stars I loved the magical elements to this story. The mystery was intriguing and the romance was heart warming.

message 236: by ⚜️XAR (new)

⚜️XAR the Bookwyrm (xar-the-bookwyrm) Finished the first of my Dusty Bookshelf books last night, A Wedding for Julia (The Pebble Creek Amish #3) by Vannetta Chapman . I wasn't that impressed with it, as it seemed like there was no romance, even for a marriage of convenience plot! Thankfully, this ends the series, but I'm disappointed that it ended on such a note.

Marty (martymill) | 1299 comments Finished Wave Wave by Sonali Deraniyagala last night. I gave it four stars. It's one of very few memoirs that had a visceral impact on me. Sonali Deraniyagala's description of the grieving process is searing and oddly beautiful. It's definitely worth a read.

Chelle_Rydz (chellerydz) | 621 comments I finished my dusty bookshelf book the other day, Daughters of Eve by Lois Duncan . I had originally read it when I was 11. It really messed me up at the time. I was very disturbed, and thought about it for years. Lois Duncan wrote Summer of Fear, one of my pre-teen favorites, but this one was much darker and upsetting to me. I also read Carrie that same year. Don't get me started on how messed up I was about sex after reading that. I guess I was just too young to have read them.
I now reread Daughters of Eve as an adult; and, while it could be a bit disturbing in the mind control /group mentality / Lord of the Flies aspects, it really wasn't that scary or traumatizing. It was an interesting story, but too short and a bit shallow. I feel so much more could have been done. The characters were too extreme - the controlling, sexist men/boys, the crazy bitter feminist, and the dumb hayseed girls. Maybe I was lucky, but I grew up in the 70s and 80s, and was never once made to feel inferior to men or boys.
In conclusion, I think this is an interesting read, just not for a very Impressionable 11 year old.

Danielle Gypsy Soul (afdaniellet) | 1919 comments Finished Devoted in Death (In Death, #41) by J.D. Robb and I hate to say this because I love this series but I was disappointed. It was almost a straight police procedural. A lot of the side characters that are in this series were absent and nothing new happened other than a new murder that was solved.

I also read Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, #1) by Ilona Andrews . I thought this was a good start to a series. I liked the world and Kate as a character and look forward to the next book.

❤Stephanie ღ♥ღMrs Daryl Dixonღ♥ღ | 482 comments Finished both my books this month, Assassin Found (Lost Shifters, #28) by Stephani Hecht and In Bear's Bed (Campus Cravings, #7) by Carol Lynne were both really good reads.

Ashley - thanks so much for the picks! I'm now up to date with Elemental Assassins series - always fun to be in Gin's world for a little bit - 4♥'s. Ricochet was a new author for me - this was a very dark, gritty book that was really well written - I gave it 5 ♥'s
