What happened in the chapter 5 makeout scene?

So you know that scene where Raffe and Penryn are sleeping in the same bed and he's asleep and she puts his hand on her boob and then suddenly they have a really hot makeout session?

“I slowly inch his hand up so that his thumb presses against the soft flesh of my breast.
Then I nudge it up just another fraction.
Raffe’s breathing is still steady. He’s still asleep.
A little more. Just a fraction . . .

Was he awake the whole time? Or did he wake up on the exact moment she moved his hand there, and then figured it out and got totally aroused in, like 5 seconds? I don't get it.

What does everyone think exactly happened in this scene?

I do think he was asleep and woke up once she started moving his hand. Perhaps, he remained quiet once he awoke or was half awake and waited to see what she was doing. Maybe he wanted to touch her as much as she wanted to be touched.

And a guy can get aroused pretty quickly, even in 5 seconds.

Can't really know if he was awake, half awake or asleep when she started, but by the end he was definitely awake and aroused.

He probably thought he was dreaming. Knowing him he was allowing himself to fantasize in his dreams that they could be together even though he felt in consciousness that it couldn't happen.
