I'm through chapter 6 thus far, and I'm having trouble connecting with this book, the characters, the story in general. Certainly I'm sticking with it. It's getting better as it goes along, but I can't quite finger on what's the problem. How's it going for everyone else?
I loved the first interlude (I think it was the first, im a bit further ahead now.) I felt like it really captured a slice of life, the brother against brother conflict that civil wars really stir up.
Oh, and Scott, not sure how it's going for you now, but I absolutely agree with you. I had (and am still having) trouble connecting with the characters being set up as the main cast. The only new one I care about now is Norra, but even she does something to her son that I am mad about (not sure if it's in chapter 9 or before.) I get it that it's hard to let your children grow up, but she's a little extreme. Loving the family background though. The ex-imperial is kinda ok, I like seeing his perspective as an ex at the battle of endor.
Not a fan of the bounty hunter, Jas or Jae? Not sure why, I guess Chuck Wendig said her aunt is one of the bounty hunters in thr Clone Wars, maybe she'll get more interesting!
Actually, I think my favorite part so far (other than Rae Sloane being awesome in her efforts to keep the imperials together) is the brothers interlude.
I'm well past this section of the book and it took awhile to connect and keep things straight. It gets better as you move through it in later chapters.
This line from chapter 3 made me smile
“Bartender. Drink-keeper. Peddler of strange liqueurs! Another, please.”

I am nearly to the end and the main story is not that good. The interludes are much better. This author's writing style is strange. Hard to read sometimes. I hope he's not writing the other two books in this trilogy.
Done with chapter 9, I like where this is going so far. I enjoy when things aren't black and white in the Star Wars universe, when good and bad is not as clear as some would like to think. The uncertainty of this post emperor world is interesting so far and I'm curious of where it will go. I enjoyed the first 9 chapters.
Dropping lots of name references but not much change in the storyline. Well, it appears at least one clone trooper maybe remains from Star Wars: Clone Wars. Cut Lawquanes, married a Twi'lek female and settled down on Saleucami. Wendig also tied in Ahsoka Tano from Star Wars: Rebels.
Jennifer wrote: "Oh, and Scott, not sure how it's going for you now, but I absolutely agree with you. I had (and am still having) trouble connecting with the characters being set up as the main cast. The only new..."I agree. Norra and her son Temmin are not enough to build a novel around, nor are Sinjir and Jas Emari.
Though Jas's aunt is Bounty Hunter Sugi from Clone Wars. Voice actress Anna Graves, who also did voice of Duchess Satine.
In chapter 5 we learn that Wedge Antilles knew Ahsoka Tano (Fulcrum.) That's interesting if you think about the timing. If you go by his established age in the Legends universe he would have been about 16 when Ahsoka was introduced in Rebels. I wonder when he met her and how long he's been a part of the Rebellion
So far I'm actually liking this book. It's keeping my interest because it's informing me about the post Return of the Jedi world. Sinjir and Sloane at this point are the most interesting to me
Finally picked up the audiobook. I've been told that the present tense style translates better in audiobook format so I decided to read it this way. Also Marc Thompson is AWESOME as a narrator.
When Mon Mothma discussed demilitarizing the New Republic I couldn't help but be reminded of the Ruusan Reformations in the Darth Bane Trilogy which also demilitarized the then Republic. As we all know this would leave it vulnerable during the Clone Wars. Perhaps this is foreshadowing the conflict in the new movies.
A little past nine but I do agree the interludes throw it off. I enjoy them but maybe separately? I'm not sure. I don't mind the present tense. It is different but nothing crazy. Sloane is by far my fav right now
