CHALLENGE TIME

I think it'd be fun to practice our "elevator pitches" for our books by coming up with some fun comparisons to give people an idea of what they're getting into with our books.

I sometimes say, "If you liked Dune, but wished it had more female characters, started right in the middle of the action, and was a bit funnier, you might like my book!"

So...

"If you liked __________, but wished it had __________, you might like my book."

Go!

There, is that good?

E (em166) This thing works better for one of my other novels Lohikaarme haha.

If you liked Lord of the Rings, but wished there were more ladies and diversity, then Lohikaarme is the novel for you.

See, now I'm gonna go check out your other book because that's EXACTLY something I'd read! Awesome!

message 9: by E (new)

E (em166) I'm not funding Lohikaarme yet, and I only have an excerpt up. I'm about a 1/3 way through writing the thing. Its a massive project I'm chipping away at.

(And yes, there's dragons, though not the kind you're used to.)

John, I had read The Great Zoo of China. There's surprisingly little depictions of dragons that will surprise me. Is that a revenant post?

John Robin (john_robin) | 299 comments I don't want to spoil too much, but I borrow loosely from Robert Jordan's mystical aspect of the dragon as a metaphysical entity, from physical dragons in Western and Eastern mythology (depending on which Dwarf culture's pantheon we are talking about), from science fiction AI concepts, and from Hindu mythology, Buddhism, and Taoism. To the best of my knowledge, this hasn't been done, but that's partly because I've intentionally blended together some great elements to give it a unique stamp. Some of it intentional, most of it just stuff that dances in front of me when Scrivener is open. (Or when I'm stuck in a traffic jam and furiously working on plot notes in my head.)

Wow, you got me sold. THAT is DEFINITELY unique! I am getting more and more hyped about your book. It seems like you had done a great job of writing it. Good luck with writing and getting preorders. :)

Amanda Orneck (amandaorneck) Dang John, I think we wrote the same book. I hate it when I do that!

Okay, here's mine:

If you liked Sword of Shannara but wish it had more princesses and pixies, you might like Shadow of the Owl.

message 18: by John (new)

John Robin (john_robin) | 299 comments Amanda, I think the best stories are rooted in the same basic archetypes. From what I've seen of your book, the unique world and voice and story we have are as different as Jupiter is from Mercury ;)

Melissa Gerard Berg Here's mine...
If you liked Game of Thrones, but wish it had a few less characters to keep track of, and characters who have emotion like real human beings, then you'll like this book!

Or

If you like the classic Joseph Campbell type Hero's Journey, but wish it had a female protagonist that wasn't all brawn and boobs, and doesn't necessarily succeed in the end, at least not in the traditional sense, then you will like this book.

Paul, this could be my pitch! So, maybe: If you like Ghosts of War but wish it were really dark but, in addition to real guns and swords, it also had blasters, and a lot of action and a characters doing morally ambiguous things ... you'd love my book.

I think I've said this before, but I believe One is the perfect title for your book. You shouldn't change it. It would be like calling A Day In The Life "Oh Boy" or "I'd love to turn you on" or something. You won't better it. Just write the thing and get it published!

Aitor Ibarra | 23 comments I'm terrible at this. I'm going to resort to three films and a book.

If you liked Contact (the film of the book) way more than Interstellar but wish it could have been like a bit more like Dune (the book) with a bit of The Mission (the film) thrown in, and with more than just two strong female characters, then you will love Oculus.

CoRy | 28 comments I think this works for my book, but it has been a while. Need to read him more.

If you like Neuromancer, but wished it had an intergalactic racing competition and the separation of two stories all on the merry go round of one man's mind spinning out of control, then you may like U-Turn At Next Synapse.

It is a little late (1:37 AM), but again; this works.
