SOLVED. Boy digs up small/minature ancient city and/or artifacts [s]

I don't remember much about this book, only that the main character who is a boy uncovers/digs up some artifacts or a small city. He may have gone into a cave to uncover them, he also may have been hiding in the cave from someone or some situation. I read the book in grade 5 which was in 1994/95 so the book was written before that.

Please help this has been bugging me for years.

This sounds like "Through the Hidden Door" by Rosemary Wells. Barney Penniman and Snowy Cobb find a mminature village while they are hiding in a cave.
