In a distant and second-hand set of dimensions, in an astral plane that was never meant to fly, the curling star-mists waver and part...
See...
Great A'Tuin the Turtle comes, swimming slowly through the interstellar gulf, hydrogen frost on his ponderous limbs, his huge and ancient shell pocked with meteor craters. Through sea-sized eyes that are crusted with rheum and asteroid dust He stares fixedly at the Destination.
In a brain bigger than a city, with geological slowness, He thinks only of the Weight.
Most of the weight is of course accounted for by Berilia, Tubul, Great T'Phon and Jerakeen, the four giant elephants upon whose broad and startanned shoulders the disc of the World rests, garlanded by the long waterfall at its vast circumference and domed by the baby-blue vault of Heaven.
Astropsychology has been, as yet, unable to establish what they think about.
—The Colour of Magic (1983)

description

This is the Discworld, which is flat and rides on the back of four giant elephants who stand on the shell of the enormous star turtle Great A'Tuin, and which is bounded by a waterfall that cascades endlessly into space.
Scientists have calculated that the chance of anything so patently absurd actually existing are millions to one.
But magicians have calculated that million-to-one chances crop up nine times out of ten.
—Mort (1987)

If you would like to walk the streets of Ankh Morpork or travel to the Counterweight continent, interact with various Discworld characters, encounter Death (if you are unlucky enough) become a citizen of one of the many cities on the Disc then this is the place for you.

Debbie Henderson | 17 comments Ooh! I'm glad you posted this! I have seen the sky programmes of 'colour of magic' 'going postal' and 'the hogfather'
Last year I decided I would work my way through these books and began with colour of magic but didn't get any further even though I enjoyed it and found a list in order!

I lost the list :(

I plan on reading through these this year though thanks Sarah :)
